The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2007
2 January 2008 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

If you are a fan of pub quizzes, and have a good knowledge of the news events in the world, entertainment, film and music, sport, technology and science, politics and much more in the year gone by, then this is a great show to watch and have fun with. Hosted by Jimmy Carr, with celebrity panellists in three teams, the players were Lily Allen, Russell Brand, Rob Brydon, Noel Fielding, David Mitchell and Jonathan Ross, this quiz focused on the year 2007 with all sorts of questions to answer about the past twelve months. These questions are asked as they are, with video and sound clips, with pictures (including Say What You See), and by celebrity and mystery guests on screen or in the studio, so it really does feel like a proper quiz that you can take part in. Events in the year 2007 that were questioned and joked about included: the controversial racism row in Celebrity Big Brother with Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty, Britney Spears shaving all her hair off, David and Beckham moving to Los Angeles so he can play for the LA Galaxy football team, the ITV phone competitions scandals, an airline passenger apparently sitting next to a corpse on his British Airways flight, Stephen Hawking going on a zero gravity flight, Hugh Grant throwing baked beans at the paparazzi, Hell's Kitchen with Marco Pierre White, Skins, Secret Diary of a Call Girl with Billie; I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! with Janice Dickinson and Christopher Biggins, the first £250,000 jackpot winner of Deal or No Deal, Max and Stacey having an affair in EastEnders, Tracy Barlow found guilty of the murder of Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street, Big Brother 8 won by Brian Belo, the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who, hit American show Heroes, Mel B pregnant with the baby of Eddie Murphy, the death of Bernard Manning, tea clipper ship Cutty Sark burning down, journalist John Sweeney going bonkers on a Scientologist based episode of Panorama, the London 2012 Olympics logo revealed, dead Bob Monkhouse in an advert for prostate cancer, the 10th anniversary memorial concert for Princess Diana, the Queen storming out angry from a photo shoot apparently concerning her tiara, the smoking ban in public places, ministers admitting to smoking cannabis as students, the Bolivian Parliament session that ended in a large fight, the song "Umbrella" by Rihanna, the viral video of prisoners in the Philippines dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller", the viral video of a little girl crying because of Tony Blair retiring as Prime Minister, the viral video of a female Swedish quiz show host vomiting on live TV, the Blue Peter naming scandal breaking, the death of Luciano Pavarotti, Northern Rock collapsing during the credit crisis, Heather Mills breaking down on GMTV, Radiohead allowing people to pay whatever they want for the download of their album In Rainbows, The Jeremy Kyle Show accused in court of "bearbaiting" the audience, the films 300, The Bourne Ultimatum and Atonement, a teacher calling a teddy bear Muhammed and causing controversy, a young girl born with eight limbs in India thought to be the new incarnation of a Hindu goddess, the "canoe man" John Darwin found hiding after pretending to be dead to claim life insurance, a grandma entering a cake making competition and coming second because she was the only one to enter, the World's Tallest Man meeting the World's Smallest Man and a couple having a plaque dedicated to them because they lived in a Travelodge for 27 years. Other celebrity and special mystery guests in the show included the children of Mitchell Brook Primary School in Neasden who act out well known news stories, Christopher Biggins who won I'm a Celebrity, Paul Croft who has a tattoo of Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter during the time J.K. Rowling announced Dumbledore was gay, John Hurt who reads passages from celebrity autobiographies of the year (Peter Andre and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson), Cerys Matthews who appeared on I'm a Celebrity, Gordon Ramsay, John Smeaton who helped stop the terrorist attack at Glasgow International Airport, Jon Snow who reads news related to lyrics from songs of the year, Take That who had hit single "Rule the World" and Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke. The jokes and the questions are what make this show so much fun, they always choose the right celebrity panellists, and it also works as a funny way to reminisce on the recent events you remember for good or for bad, a great comedy quiz show. Very good!
