No. I Love You, Man was filmed from a script written by John Hamburg, who also directed and co-produced the movie.
Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) gets engaged to his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones) but soon after realizes that he has no close male friend to be his best man. So Peter tries to find a best friend, meeting Sydney Fife (Jason Segel). They quickly become good friends, but it starts to tamper with Peter's engagement.
Peter stated at dinner that he really doesn't know his brother because they were 8 years apart and that, when his younger brother was growing up, Peter had already moved out. Then, when he overheard (as he was about to try to join the ladies by making them root beer floats with chocolate straws during their ladies night) his fiancee's friends talking about how much of a pain a husband with no friends can be and how clingy they can be, he decided that he needed to get a best friend.

In the context of this movie, Peter sets up "dates" to meet men he has never met before in order to find a male friend to whom he can get close enough so as to ask him to be the best man at his wedding to Zooey. In another context, it might be called "hanging out with a buddy" -- except that these were strangers, not his buddies.
