Picking up immediately where Anaconda 3 left off, herpetologist Amanda Hayes finally learns her employer Murdoch's true colors when he hires a doctor to harvest a fresh supply of blood orchids to experiment with the regenerative nectar on a baby snake in order to seek treatment for his own terminal illness. Amanda is forced to secretly bring together another team of scientists whom face off against a heavily armed squad of Murdoch's men to steal the coveted orchids before the killer Anaconda hunts both parties down. Ever hear of the law of diminishing returns? After watching this needless sequel you could say it definitely applies. Not that last year's 'Anaconda III' is any more necessary, but in some ways it's better. This is yet another film in a long line of Sci-Fi Channel movies about killer snakes and if you've seen any others then you know what to expect. Unless you're a killer snake junkie you can find much better and more entertaining ways to pass the time.
Pros: Acting is better than this film deserves. Lots of pretty Romanian scenery. An alright score. Moves at a decent pace.
Cons: Some of the dialogue is cringe-worthy. Nothing new or interesting brought to the table. Too many characters. Though he gets more screen time than in the last one, John Rhys-Davies is still wasted in a thankless role. The CGI snakes are no better than before. Even more plot less than before. Takes itself far too seriously. A completely unnecessary set-up for another sequel.
Final thoughts: Not that I went into this expecting something of high caliber, but with the the first two being good mindless entertainment and III being an OK diversion you'd think IV would be too, but not so. Trust me, even if you like the first couple of these and other killer snake films you really shouldn't waste your time on this dud. Just see one of the first two again or 'Curse II: The Bite.' Let's hope they don't decide to do an 'Anaconda V' for next year. Ugh!
