Review: Katherine Heigl returns to TV in 'State of Affairs'

17 November 2014 6:00 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Imitation is the sincerest form of television, and anytime a new show becomes a hit, you can guarantee that another network — usually several networks — will be racing to copy it. With "State of Affairs" — either the last new fall network show, or the first mid-season replacement, depending on your point of view — the question isn't whether it's imitating another show, but which one. Is it a belated attempt to do a network-friendly version of "Homeland," with a Carrie Mathison type who's reckless and emotional and has lots of sex, but who isn't certifiably crazy? Is it NBC's attempt to repeat its own success last year with "The Blacklist" (whose Monday at 10 timeslot "State of Affairs" takes over tonight), only under the mistaken belief that people are really watching for Liz and not Red? Or a bit of both? Katherine Heigl returns to TV (after an uninspired stretch of movie "romantic" "comedies") as Charleston Tucker, »

Ranked: Every Summer Movie Season Since 1980 - Part 1

8 September 2014 4:11 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.

On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production »

8 Stars Toronto Could Do Without at Tiff

2 September 2014 2:10 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

It's no secret that stars aren't always on their best behaviour at all times. After all, when the whole world worships you, it can pretty easily go straight to your head. It can make you believe that the same rules of etiquette (and even the law) don't apply to you. You're above it.

We've all heard whispers of Mariah's demands for white furniture, Beyonce's insistence on brand-new toilet seats and Britney's strict orders for Cheetos and cheeseburgers. But diva behavior isn't limited to divas. A handful of actors have infamously worn out their welcome on the Toronto Film Festival's red carpet with their diva antics and entitled behaviour. And hey, we're Canadian; that kind of attitude doesn't really fly at the film festival renowned for bringing stars and regular folks together to bask in a mutual love of cinema.

While most stars are nothing but gracious at Tiff, there are a few whose ridiculous demands, »

A Guide To the Best Romantic Comedies Streaming on Netflix

8 August 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

We’re always looking for a good romantic comedy, be it for a movie night with friends or a rainy Sunday afternoon in solitude. In recent years the output has been bleak — will anyone admit to seeing Gigli, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, or The Ugly Truth? — but we can’t help but hope and pray that soon an adorable on-screen couple will whisk us away to a land of meet-cutes and apartment parties in a tidy 90 minutes.

What If seems like our best bet. Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, it explores the timeless question of whether or not men and women can just be friends — thanks to Kazan’s significant other and DanRad’s unrequited love. The man formerly known as Harry Potter has proven himself through a variety of stage and screen roles, and Kazan has an innate likeability we kind of just want to ask her out to coffee. »

Sylvester Stallone Wants Sigourney Weaver for The Expendabelles

5 August 2014 3:30 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

We've been hearing about this Expendabelles film project for awhile already. It's basically a female version of the action film franchise The Expendables

The movie is in development at Millennium Films, and Robert Luketic is currently set to direct the film, which Sylvester Stallone is also producing. Luketic has previously directed film such as Legally Blonde, 21, The Ugly TruthKillers, and the very forgettable Paranoia.

As of right now, there has been no official casting for the film, but Stallone has his eye on Sigourney Weaver to play his wife in it. Stallone suggested to the press (via: /Film) that The Expendabelles could start with "a messy divorce between him and Weaver. The couple would be splitting up their assents, resulting in Weaver getting half the Expendables." He then joked, "So she’d get the house, the kids and my mercenaries!"

He goes on to talk about some of the »

Katherine Heigl's Not Difficult To Work With, Says Katherine Heigl

14 July 2014 6:21 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

As a part of a hit series (Grey's Anatomy) and a comedy smash (Knocked Up), Katherine Heigl was once poised to be the next big thing. And for a while, she was, churning out rom-com after rom-com, from 27 Dresses to The Ugly Truth, Killers and Life as We Know It. But Heigl soon developed a bad reputation, becoming plagued by the word "difficult." But she's not! At least that's what Katherine Heigl says. THR reports Katherine Heigl was surprised to step into some difficult questions when she took to the panels of the Television Critics Association to discuss her new drama State of Affairs. Rather than talking about the NBC series--which we should mention stars Heigl as a CIA officer who becomes an national security advisor to the president--the press in attendance were interested in Heigl and her mother/manager Nancy and their spotted reputations. Katherine Heigl Felt "Betrayed" by Her Career

2 July 2014 6:39 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

For better or worse, Katherine Heigl's career will never be the same. Several years ago, the actress was poised to become the next big movie star, thanks to comedies like 27 Dresses and Knocked Up. And then…she opened her mouth. Heigl wasn't afraid to discuss taboo topics like sexism in Hollywood, and she openly criticized the writing she was given on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. While her candor was refreshing, it was also polarizing—and the media was quick to dismiss the actress. To their dismay, Heigl continued to work in film, starring in and executive producing 2009's The Ugly Truth (opposite Gerard Butler) and 2010's Life As We Know It (opposite Josh Duhamel), among »

Katherine Heigl admits to 'Marie Claire UK' that she felt 'betrayed' by her career.

There was a time when Katherine Heigl was the "It" girl in romantic comedies but that soon went away after a string of poorly reviewed movies. The actress admits to Marie Claire UK (via Daily Mail) that she felt "betrayed" when it all came crashing down.

"The thing that was my best friend for a long time suddenly turned on me. And I didn't expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me," the former Grey's Anatomy star recalls.

After a headline-grabbing departure from Grey's, Heigl went on to star in movies including Knocked Up, 27 Dresses and The Ugly Truth. "I had an amazing time. I love romantic comedies," she says. "But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn't say no."

Luketic To Helm "ExpendaBelles" Movie

6 February 2014 4:04 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Robert Luketic ("The Ugly Truth," "Killers," "21") has come aboard to direct "The ExpendaBelles," the female counterpart to the Millennium Films franchise "The Expendables".

The story follows an elite group of highly trained female mercenaries brought together for a covert hostage rescue mission. Once behind enemy lines, they discover that they will also need to topple an evil dictator bent on world domination.

No casting is yet set despite a bunch of rumored names including Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz and Milla Jovovich.

This re-teams Luketic with his "Legally Blonde" scribes Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah who've penned the female action comedy spinoff. Sylvester Stallone and Kevin King will produce and shooting is slated to begin this Summer.

Ridiculous Plot Details for The Expendabelles and Director Announced

6 February 2014 11:45 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Art by tclarke597

As most of you already know, The Expendabelles is a female take on Sylvester Stallone's action franchise The Expendables. The movie is being developed over at  Millennium Films, and they've hired Robert Luketic to direct the film, which Stallone is also producing. Just so you know, this is the same guy that directed Legally Blonde, 21, The Ugly TruthKillers, and the incredibly awful film Paranoia. Once you read the ridiculous plot synopsis (via: Deadline) you'll understand why they ended up with this director,

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. ‘The ExpendaBelles’ Snags ‘Legally Blonde’ Director; Plot Details Revealed

6 February 2014 11:36 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Millennium Films is pressing ahead with The ExpendaBelles, which is being sold as the feminine counterpart to the macho throwback that is the studio’s Expendables franchise. A screenplay has been in development for the past year, but it now looks as though the action/comedy spinoff is being prepped to being shooting this year in Bulgaria, which is where Expendables 3 was filmed back in 2013.

ExpendaBelles is being co-written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith, whose resume includes the lucrative (and fairly well-liked) cheeky Reese Witherspoon rom-com Legally Blonde, in addition to the not-so-beloved (yet profitable) raunchy Katherine Heigl rom-com The Ugly Truth. The project has now found a director in Robert Luketic, who (by no coincidence) called the ...

The Expendables Spin-Off ExpendaBelles Gets Director Robert Luketic

The Plotline of ‘The ExpendaBelles’ Doesn’t Sound Very Empowering to Women

6 February 2014 9:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Well, this is problematic. We’ve long been berated with rumors of an imminent female-centric spin on the popular Expendables franchise, the clunkily named The ExpendaBelles, but actual details on the project have been consistently slim. All we’ve really known has been neatly encapsulated in said title – it’s The Expendables but with ladies! – but now the film has both a director and a very distressing plotline to either A) recommend it or B) send potential audiences members running for the proverbial hills. For now, we’re checking off option B. Deadline reports that Robert Luketic has come on board to direct the feature, which makes the film sort of a perfect marriage of his directorial territory: bad action films (Paranoia, Killers) and projects that are aimed at women while also being insulting to them (Monster-in-Law, The Ugly Truth, Legally Blonde). The film will see Luketic reuniting with his Legally Blonde and The Ugly Truth screenwriters »
