Sonny Boy tries to take on the heavy subject of race, but it comes off as forced and somewhat contrived. The film sets out to portray white people as inherently racist, which feels overly simplistic and one-sided. The narrative falls flat in its attempt to create a nuanced discussion on the topic, instead resorting to cliched and tired tropes.
While the intention behind the story is understandable, the execution leaves much to be desired. It's not particularly engaging or thought-provoking, and it misses the mark on delivering a more balanced or insightful message. A well-intentioned but ultimately disappointing film.

I just watched this movie after I was notified of this movie, which also shows my grandfather who had his last hiding place at this interracial couple's home.
Therefore, I may be biased, but this movie is based on a remarkable story during WWII, that involves real life's, real emotions and real consequences to people who tried to do the best they could to survive. Very good to watch this movie and see how a woman doesn't settle for an unhappy life with a husband who is a religious hypocrite. Then she finds happiness with another man and goes through all the hardships of racial biased, Nazi's etc.
In the time we live in today with another war ongoing, this is a reminder why wars are the worst.
I never got to know my grandparents and to learn this week that my grandfather was one of the people in hiding at this address, is surreal!

I love World War 2 films and was looking forward to watching this one. This was a beautifully scripted story that started in the 1920's and depicted love, rejection, discrimination, prejudice and racism. Throw in infidelity and then the evil of the Naxis in World War 2 and the film becomes an epic of the intertwining of lives and the survival of the main characters throughout. It shows the cards we are all dealt with and how people deal with same. This film also depicts huge courage and strength in the face of great adversity and many pockets of kindness and love throughout. It is both heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measure.
I would most definitely recommend this film and sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did...

- TriviaThe real-life Waldy Nods, son of Waldemar and Rika Nods, attended the film's premiere in Suriname at age 81, four years before he passed away. He responded favorably to the film, stating "every time I see their image, I fall in love with those two people playing my parents."
- GoofsWhen Rika is in the camps, sitting outside in the rain, she has a flashback to an earlier scene that took place shortly after Waldemar moved in and they were all dancing outside in the rain with her young children; Sonny Boy (who wasn't born yet) appears as a teenager dancing in the rain as well.
