The type of project for which the saying "too little, too late" was coined

"Data Squad" is a curious piece of work. Some praise it for renewing a more serious approach, whereas others deride it for its apparent lack of originality and stark departure from the common style seen in the past. Interestingly, Jeff Nimoy, the director of the English version of Digimon, regards this one as his favorite. Here is my impression of it all.

There is a paradoxical departure from earlier styles with a sense of trite familiarity. Consider the animation, which has a more traditional anime look. The obvious intention was to give the series a comparatively sophisticated style, but it jettisons the spirit of the original series and is on average, frankly, less pleasant to look at, more flat and artificial. Recycled footage is thankfully scarce and nighttime sequences are occasionally atmospheric, but the backdrops are less interesting and "emptier" than those in previous seasons. Both the digimon and Digital World possess virtually no sense of discovery, feeling more like generic fantasy elements than distinct creations. Not to mention, the typical rehashing of monster ideas from previous seasons (i.e. a Greymon subspecies and wolf based creature) has really become annoying at this point.

The repetitious first act devotes minimal time to establishing the heroes and is peppered with lazy melodrama, but by the second act "Data Squad" begins to come unto its own as a tale of misunderstandings and inter-dimensional relations. This portion of the story has the most pay-off, largely from the schemes of the main villain. Unfortunately, this section is often told on autopilot, the primary reason for which being the choppy subplots. Some, like the clash with the bio-hybrids, are distractions, while others, like the roles of Merukimon and Saberleomon, are severely truncated and would have enriched the primary conflict. Minimal interactions between the heroes and main villain do not help, reducing the credibility of the grudge between both sides.

Typical stumbling in the final act rears its ugly head, as everything is repackaged in the form of a comparatively uninteresting, tacked on world ending crisis involving that stupid marketing gimmick known as the Royal Knights. Sure, the digimon leaders eventually set aside their distrust of humans, but consider how much more poignantly the problem was resolved in "Tamers". There, humans created digimon and misunderstand them, and have to cooperate with them to undo the consequences of their own technology. Here, both sides just hammer away at each other until some mutual respect is produced; any claims of humanity's propensity for destruction are perfunctory. Furthermore, the route they took to have the primary antagonist defeated in the middle act and show the consequences of his actions in the final act is ineffectual, because these secrets and developments do not enhance other parts of the series by providing a clearer understanding of earlier events. No one is going to be more fascinated by Kenan's life or Merukimon's death after watching the conflict with King Drasil. One of the few exceptions is the revelation that Kudamon is actually one of the Royal Knights, which supplements the effort for harmony between the two worlds.

The cast is a remarkable example of potential obfuscated by adherence to conventions. Every one of the heroes demonstrates unique characteristics or experiences that are not capitalized on. The spotlight hogging Marcus, for example, suffers from many moments that are perfunctorily lifted from Tai's history, but he also developed a penchant for fighting to cope with his father's absence. That's fairly new as far as this franchise is concerned, yet not explored until towards the end. Thomas and Yoshi, likewise, have some unique concerns (isolation from intellectual gap, insecurity from sibling rivalry), but these are sporadically visited, brushed to the side in favor of conventional stuff. It also doesn't help that simply getting overly emotional too often passes for "pivotal character moments". An interesting group dynamic is buried here that may have expanded the horizons of this franchise, especially considering that this is the oldest group yet, but these guys are denied the relative nuance and appealing personalities that made other groups enduring.

Data Squad's by the numbers feel leaves it bereft of the essence that made its predecessors so appealing. For all its flash and semblance of edginess, it's largely just another dumb action show. Out of all the Digimon seasons I have seen, this is probably the one that I have the least amount of feelings for; it would not have made much of a difference to me had it never been made. I admire it on certain levels and may have fully recommended it if not for the combination of its time of release and placement in the franchise.

Appropriate storyline Show the emotions of the characters in the best possible way Some of its parts were somewhat imaginative And put aside the clichés of an anime And of course it revives an old nostalgia The sounds were appropriate And deserves a relatively high score My score for this anime is 8.

A lot of problems yet passable
mellowo2 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
*Disclaimer* this is my first anime review so apologies if I miss out on any important things I should be paying attention to also there are going to be spoilers in this review and this is the first digimon show that I've sat through. If you think I can't give this show a fair rating because I haven't seen the alternative material this show is based off of feel free to stop reading now

This is a show that I remembered watching when I was 6 years old and thought it was awesome. I rewatched it quite recently to see if it was as good as I remember. Is it? No. Was it still good? For the most part yes.

The story is that our main character is Marcus Damen a high school boy who encounters Agumon a digimon on the run from the data squad. They befriend each other and the data squad notice their bond and hire them to work for them. The plot in the first 10 episodes or so is relatively weak with it acting like some sort of more action packed Pokémon episode. It starts to pick up a bit after it finishes this mark though. There's a scientist who used to work for Markus's father 'who is currently missing' that comes to DATs wanting to go on an expedition to the digital world to confront the head of the digimon, Merukimon. He brings an army with him and when they get there he kills Merukimon which DATs are shocked by and the plot for the majority of the rest of the show is to stop Kurota, the scientist.

One thing I don't really like in this show is the amount of side plots they have going on and keeps on getting side-tracked and is full of filler episodes that are really unnecessary.

The main characters are OK with one exception. Markus, Thomas and Keenan are all given a good background and back story, Markus and Keenan especially but Yoshi is the exception. She feels bland and she seems really unnecessary in most of the show's situations except to stop Markus and Thomas having arguments. I have the same problem with the digimon. Falkomon, Keenan's digimon is probably the best as he's given a really scarring back story. Agumon, Markus' digimon is OK but he isn't given much background but he is a good bit of comic relief. Gaolmon and Lalamon, Thomas' and Yoshi's digimon respectively, like Yoshi feel bland and aren't given much reason for me to like them. They say they have a strong relationship with their digimon partners. Markus and agumon and Keenan and Falcomon I can see have bonds but Thomas and Gaolmon and Yoshi and Lalamon I just see them giving orders to each other. Keenan and Markus talk with their digimon and play around with them and the others I see nothing.

I can't really say much about the animation except it's OK but the animation is really good during fight scenes. I can't really explain why it just is. The sound is also gr8 in the show. The dub is actually better than the sub in my opinion

Final verdict Digimon: Data squad is good enough for kids and is a good distraction for them but there is little to please other audiences.

Pros + Action scenes are fantastically put together + Good lore + gr8 sound + good dub Cons - Most characters are bland - Some have uninteresting back stories - Some talking scenes are boring

Sry for anyone who hates it or thinks it's bad. But I freakin love it. The atmosphere fits. I really love the characters. And I enjoyed that it gets darker and darker with every episode. I love the german dub and intro. I love the japanese intro. But the english intro and the english digivolve theme... damn that's how to spice it up...

Data Squad is an odd throwback to the original Digimon adventure formula with some of the most questionable changes
theagolx19 May 2015
STORY (5/10) To sum it up the premise is basically Power rangers+Men in Black+Digital Monsters.

Random teenagers wearing funny costumes work for a secret agency to keep the monsters from destroying the world and if you're STILL not convinced then they made it obvious by the use "neuralizers" and it also strives to be all dark&edgy but refuses to actually be mature&logically coherent like Tamers was its all flash and no substance.

For ex: In the older seasons(Adventure&Tamers) adults&children alike interacted with each other like actual human beings but here the characters act like they're from a sitcom even in extremely serious&dangerous situations the characters are busy throwing snide nonchalant remarks at each other whereas parents of the teens are just stock characters who are less believable than the monsters.

And to top it all off unlike the other seasons where children had to rely on their partners&parents and bond with them to survive here that complex character development structure is reduced to DBZ logic, screaming&willing for power basically gives them more power and people can be brought back from dead there is no need for personal introspection, its mostly about being rebellious teens who have a dysfunctional relationship with each other and mostly apathetic relations with their own parents. That's pretty much the gist of it nothing really substantial happens till Ep 24 mark, avoiding any major spoilers the "Kurata Arc" is pretty much the high point of this season and then after that it starts recycling old plot elements from tamers&adventure.

CHARACTERS (3/10) Marcus:- let me inform you that THIS guy is the main protagonist of this season,80% of spotlight is reserved for him,if you don't like him the very least the chances are you're not going to like the entire season.

Our main "protagonist" is a 15 yr old street thug with an IQ of a rock(he goes to school and doesn't know what is a VIRUS is!). His physical feats are outrageous he can Jump 40 ft in the air and still manage to give a K.O punch to a giant monster AND land perfectly fine without fracturing his legs if that's not absurd enough for you then he can also nosedive his fist directly into a giant titanium shield AND break it.

So putting THAT aside he is just an unlikeable jerk! his attitude is impulsive, rude&inconsiderate and he NEVER changes,he has no chemistry with any of the other main characters he even treats his partner like a subordinate thug. It is in stark contrast to the original season where kids had vibrant personalities and they all worked with each other like a family and they learned NOT to be impulsive&inconsiderate but here the show glorifies Marcus's thuggish shenanigans.

Yoshino:- If you search for "Token Anime girl" online you'd most likely see yoshino's photo on the front page.. she's the textbook definition of that she's bland, boring, shallow, whiny and much like marcus she never changes! despite being a main character she has ABSOLUTELY ZERO relevance to the plot like AT ALL.

Thomas:- He's yet another moody pretty boy child prodigy he's basically batman if he was a 15 yr old with too much estrogen. TBH compared the psycho thug and the miss bland universe Thomas is likable&interesting, he has a decent backstory but his character arc is rushed, his relationship with his sister just isn't built up as well as taichi's bond with Kari or the bond of henry&suzie. In other words Thomas's sister's(much like marcus's sister) is a very generic moe girl NOT written like a real life child.

Kurata:- He's easily the best character in this season, too bad he's just a 2d Evil scientist, most of villains in the series have been just evil for no good reason but Kurata is a human which makes it unique i guess. Nonetheless he's a joy to watch he's sleazy, he uses politics and dirty tricks to archive his goals.

Keenan/Itsuno:- A feral child raised by a monster and even though almost all monsters can speak fluently he speaks like Tarzan "Me hate Hoomans!" i guess he's just retarded, whatever he's still better than the psycho thug, too bad the show again rushes his mother's relationship thus ending his character arc.

ARTSTYLE (4/10):- The artstlye is kind of a mixed bag, its vivid and doesn't have the series's trademark artstyle, on the surface it just looks like another generic anime. The main problem is with the animation and the character&monster designs, the animation is very inconsistent in quality, sometimes its very choppy, sometimes its smooth, sometimes the black outline is overly prominent, the adult 30+ women look like they're in the early college years.

And then there's Digimon's butchered proportions, to understand the problem you have to first consider the fact that the official designs for most of the monster designs from Bandai were not supposed to be that Big, yet Savers takes the liberty to make monsters who were never intended to be taller than your average 10 yr old taller than a skyscraper.

CONCLUSION (6/10):- This is a decent Shonen/action anime which takes painfully long to start going somewhere and it doesn't feel like its part of the Digimon series, its too mean spirited, lacks any semblance of realism(character wise),maturity&mysticism which the series is known for, if you aren't a fan of the series and are just looking a fun action packed anime watch Hellsing OVA instead.

Lot's of pontential, horrible execution
viniciusgabrielsagario1 October 2023
The anime had a lot of potential due to the material it works with and the universe it is in, but the writers did the favor of sticking it in the ass.

The anime starts off silly, and without a very interesting story. When he finally goes into an interesting story (Kurata's arc), it quickly gets bad again, which is why you see the pattern that the scriptwriters have anxiety. Every time a new problem appears, a new evolution or improvement suddenly appears and they immediately solve the problem. The animation is sometimes terrible, in addition to the constant change of voice actors.

If you're olden than about 6, you'll find this pretty freacking stupid and frustrating to watch.
