- Cesar sits in Esteban's office, facing his boss from the other side of his desk.
They converse in Spanish. "If you torture a man," Esteban is telling Cesar, "he'll say what you want him to say.""
"I did not say her name," Cesar replies. "He said it to us."
Another man behind Cesar pipes in. "It's true, patron!"
"If I want you to speak, I'll ask you a question," Esteban snaps at the guy, whose eyes widen in shock as he falls silent.
Esteban begins angrily tapping his pen on his desk, "If this information is true, you realize you are condemning her to die?"
Cesar pauses for a moment, looking down at his lap. "Si," he says.
"Well," Esteban concludes, "I will not order this execution based on the dying groans of a skinless man. Keep looking."
Cesar's facial expression twitches for a moment, then he halfway shakes his head. "Si, senor," he says. A shadow of pain crosses Esteban's face, as he refuses to admit his squeeze is a rat.
In Roy Till's office, the DEA agent grills Nancy as Dean acts as her lawyer. Per Roy's instructions during their secret meeting, Nancy maintains that she had no idea that there was a tunnel in the back of the maternity shop, and she did not find it odd that men were constantly coming and going. "A paycheck is a paycheck," she says.
Dean does his able best to combat Till's interrogation with legalese, and Till returns fire by making Dean look like an ass. Another agent walks in and interrupts, whispering something in Till's ear. Suddenly he looks very concerned and, along with the other agents standing in the room, gets up and leaves. Nancy and Dean exchange a puzzled look.
Somewhere else, Lisa and Silas are in bed together. He jokes that he's won't turn 18 for 15 minutes, so they have a little longer to break the law. They begin kissing again... but Silas hears something. The door opens, and it's Lisa's ex-husband Henry and her kid, Brad. The ex begins snapping photos of Silas as the boy is frantically trying to put some clothes on. Henry gloats that the family court judge is going to love seeing the snapshots. Lisa insists that sole custody is the only thing that makes sense, since Henry decided to cheat on her, then refused to live closer to his child. Henry retorts, "I want to make sure someone's looking after my son while you're getting high and banging N Sync."
Silas slinks out the room to find Brad sitting in the hall, his head between his knees. "Sorry, dude," is all Silas can manage.
"Yeah," Brad says. "You leaving?"
"Yeah," Silas says, and splits.
Back in Roy Till's office, Roy returns and stares daggers at Dean. "Get out," Till hisses. Dean refuses, and Till physically grabs him and tosses him out the door, shutting it behind him. Till just found out that his partner and lover, Phil, was found dead and hanging on a border fence, his face sanded off.
He demands Nancy tell him who owns the tunnel. Nancy balks, and Till starts screaming and cursing at her. Nancy weakly insists that she doesn't know, but Till presses her
"Who's Guillermo's boss? Who's the f*****g animal on the other side of the fence?"
Nancy swears she's never been on the other side of the fence. (No sir, certainly not to see her lover, the Mayor of Pot Town.)
Till assures her that he's going to find the guy, and he's going to kill him. And not only that, he's going to kill everyone he ever loved. And he's going to do it alone. He leans in, with a crazy look his eye, and blood on his hand. "If I find out you made me go the wrong way, I'm going to kill you too. He was my partner."
Across the border, Celia tries to buy a bus ticket to find her other daughter, Quinn. After a great deal of negotiating with the woman behind the counter - or, actually, a desk - the woman hands Celia a bunch of carrots. Turns out it's for the donkey pulling the cart that will take Celia where she needs to go. The driver mistakes Celia for Kathleen Turner, a case of mistaken identity she's in no hurry to correct. When the cart pulls to a stop, Celia hears a faint, "Hi, Mom." It's Quinn, dressed the part of the lovely senorita down Mexico way.
Back at Doug's studio, Andy can't believe that Doug called the INS on Maria and had her deported. Doug runs down his reasons -- primarily, Maria didn't have sex with him, but she had sex with Andy. So they can have sex with themselves, he says in so many four-letter words.
"That was really awful, Doug. Even for you."
"There are rules among men, Andy. Codes. You don't have sex with your friend's girl. Ever. Codebreaker!"
Andy pointed out that Doug had sex with Celia, his friend Dean's wife. "So, who's the original codebreaker, Codebreaker?"
Doug thinks about that, then they apologize to each other. Doug confesses that he really liked Maria, but Andy corrects him -- he didn't like her like her, she was just his fantasy. He's still too in love with Dana to "like like" anyone.
This obviously hit a nerve. Doug shoots back that Andy's in love with Nancy. Andy denies it, but Doug doesn't buy it. Why else would he put up with all her crap?
Andy looks down at the floor for a moment. "The kids," he says. "My brother."
"Nancy," Doug finishes for him.
"I don't love Nancy, OK? So shut up."
"No, you shut up!" Doug says. They go back and forth like eight-year-olds, until Andy's phone rings. It's Silas. He needs Andy.
Andy and Silas head back to the house with boxes of Silas's product. They had to move the grow van, too, but Andy assures him that they found a safe place for it in a secure lot. Once they reach Doug on the phone, they'll move everything to his house. Shane, who has been playing piano in the background during this exchange, wishes Silas a happy birthday. Andy apologizes for having forgotten. Silas mumbles that it's not a big deal, then yells at Shane to stop playing the piano.
Nancy walks in, and Andy marvels that she's not in jail. Nancy says she just had to answer some questions, then wishes Silas a happy birthday. She asks him if he has plans, and he informs her that they're off. So are he and Lisa. Nancy suggests they head out to an Italian place for dinner, then announces she has to take a bath as she scoots out of the room, dialing her phone. Silas follows her and asks if she can give him that small business loan he requested as a birthday present. She tells him it's not a good time. He halfheartedly thanks her for thinking about it anyway. Barely holding it together, she calls Esteban, who is drinking a scotch and smoking a cigar. She tells him that she was taken into custody and questioned, then released. They exchange small talk about what they had for breakfast, then he tells her he wants to see her. Tonight.
Shoot. It's Silas's birthday.
Does it have to be tonight? she asks. He insists: Yes. He tells her he'll send the car, but she says she'll drive. "Te amo," she says, and it's met with a pause.
Awkward.
"Yo tambien," he finally replies. She smiles and hangs up.
As he hangs up, the camera slowly pulls back...to reveal Cesar sitting in the room, and Esteban looking at a photograph of Nancy...with Roy Till.
"Perhaps," Cesar says in Spanish, "they are just friends from high school." Esteban dejectedly tosses the photo onto the table in front of him.
Nancy soaks in her bathtub, looking utterly defeated. Andy knocks on the door and asks to come in -- he needs to talk to her. She refuses at first, then finally says yes. He walks in and stares at her naked body. "I can see your boobies," Andy says.
"Good for you," she replies. She tells him to shut the door and sit down, and Andy complies.
"They're nice," he says. "They're bigger than I thought."
"Thanks," she whispers. He offers her a towel, and she asks him to get to the reason he came in.
Andy asks if she's going to jail, and she says no. He asks why, and she says she can't tell her. She asks him to run more bathwater and add some bubbles, and she does.
As the water is running, she says, "I used to be able to rationalize the things I did, Andy...Not anymore. At some point recently, everything became right or wrong. Right or wrong." She holds her breath and dips under the water, then comes up for air, leaning over the side of the tub.
"What did you do?" Andy asks.
Nancy describes a girl in a blue dress. She was so young, she says. She had a bag with a butterfly on it...and she continues to confess everything. In a montage, we see Andy turn on the water again, and again, many times. Nancy looks more distressed as she keeps talking.
In Doug's studio, he sits down and unburdens himself in a letter to Dana, telling her how different his life is now. "Since losing you," he says in a voiceover, "I've lost all sense of joy and pleasure. Only one thing left to do."
Doug grabs some rope and makes a noose, and throws it over a beam. He puts his head into it, tightens the knot...and, pulling a Michael Hutchence minus the final reward, starts to pleasure himself with abandon.
"So, f*** you, and your lawyers!" the voiceover screams. "Come get me if you want, I don't give a s***, because I'm broke. And when you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose!"
Then, more calmly: "Take care. Doug." That's right: Hate, baby, hate -- when there's nothing left for you!
In Mexico, Celia and Quinn are eating dinner, which looks like spaghetti and meatballs. Celia sips a drink and compliments Quinn's boyfriend Rodrigo on his cooking. Quinn corrects her: It's Rudolpho. She asks how long Celia's been sober and she tells her 17 days...and that's why she's come to visit. She says she's working her steps and making amends, and says she's very, very sorry. Really and truly sorry...Quinn blankly stares at her. Celia asks if she should get specific.
"I think we're way past that, Mom," Quinn says. She goes on to tell Celia that Casa Reforma was really good for her -- she met the man she loves there, and they live humbly and simply. Celia seems to be losing focus as Quinn is speaking. "My life has purpose," Quinn says.
"It's very hot. Are you hot?" Celia asks.
"I'm just so glad that you came here to see me, so I could tell you that..and tie you up and lock you in a room and keep you there, until I sell your ass back into suburban slavery." Celia passes out face first in her spaghetti. Goodnight, Mr. Roofie.
Rudolpho asks if he should call her father. She says yes, to call Daddy Dean and tell him she wants $200,000 cash or she starts sending body parts.
"Revolution is a very sad affair," Rudolpho observes. "But its tears are shed in the name of greater good."
Quinn tells him, in so many words, that he can take his revolution and stuff it -- she intends to take her money and move to Belize.
Nightfall. Nancy is driving to met Esteban, as promised, and calls to order a gift basket for Silas from Terrifically Gift Baskets. A chipper sales clerk tells Nancy she'll assist with her order. She suggests a theme basket: Casino Night? Chocolate Universe? Gay Paris?
"Do you have anything for a son who thinks his mother has completely failed him?"
Back and the house, Andy suggests they go to the restaurant. Shane asks Silas if Nancy even said where she was going, and Silas, drinking a beer, says no. Shane wishes she'd just get arrested already: "At least we'd know where she is. Seriously, isn't it only a matter of time? We need to make a plan."
Silas tells Shane that he's 18 now, so he can be his legal guardian. Andy pipes in that he's the adult in the house, and Silas deflects that notion, saying they're all a bunch of babies, waiting for Nancy to make the money and complying with her orders.
"It's time for us to take on some responsibility, because for all we know, she's going to prison," Silas says.
"Or worse," Andy mutters. (Apparently Nancy really let her skeletons out of the closet for a hoedown the other night.)
Shane asks what Andy means, and Andy says, "Nothing. She's fine."
Silas says he's thinking of buying some land in Mexico. He made money from the cheese shop operation, and he's going to price out a property purchase. He'll sell to a few clubs, but that's it. He'll keep it small. No stupid expansions or unnecessary mistakes. He wants to keep it mellow. Andy says he has money from his coyote gig and asks Silas if he wants a partner. Silas is happy to take his cash. Shane asks what he's supposed to do, and Silas tells him to go to school and be a kid.
"You can help by not telling Mom."
Shane says he never talks to Nancy, so that won't be a problem. Andy scolds him, saying that Nancy may have messed up a lot of things, but she's still their mother and they all love her...love her like...a mother. Andy's finally realizing Doug may be right.
Shane says he's going to get a popsicle, and asks if anyone else wants one. Andy, hugging a pillow, says yes. The kid heads to the kitchen and opens the fridge to find a whole lotta "head cheese" sandwiches. He smiles the smile of the cat that just stumbled across a catnip field.
Nancy's in the car completing the order (for a Sterling Celebration basket) and telling the clerk what she wants on the basket's card. She can't quite get it right.
"'Dear Silas: Happy birthday'...'happy 18th birthday'...um...don't write um. 'I think you're an amazing son. I'm so proud to be your mom'...be your mom...that sounds like B.S., doesn't it?...'Dear Silas, if you never see me again, I've probably been murdered. Enjoy the dried apricots and butter cookies."
The clerk injects that the basket doesn't come with butter cookies. Nancy tells the woman to shut up and just listen.
"Dear Silas," she says in a serious tone, "thanks for raising yourself for the past 18 years. You've done a great job." She begins to cry.
"Miss Botwin?" the clerk asks. "Are you OK, Miss Botwin?"
She composes herself long enough to tell the clerk to sign it "Me, Mom." And implores her to get it to Silas tonight, and add the butter cookies.
Cut to: Shane standing with the goth girls by a skate rink, selling bags of weed to skaters who swing by.
Cut to: Esteban's office, and the moment of truth. Esteban, surrounded by his goons, tells Nancy he doesn't want to believe it. "So, don't," she says.
"I thought you loved me," Esteban whispers.
"I do," Nancy tells him, and he looks at her with the slightest sad smile.
"You have made me so sad," he says.
"Well," she says brightly, "I think I can make you happy."
He tosses the photo of her with Roy Till in front of her. "It's too late," he says.
Nancy stares at it, then reaches into her purse to produce a photo of her own: an ultrasound. Esteban looks gobsmacked.
"It's too early to tell," Nancy says, "but it feels like a boy."
