Singapore Festival: Mouly Surya Talks ‘Marlina’ Journey

Indonesian filmmaker, Mouly Surya has had an incredible journey. Her first film, 2008’s “Fiksi” was a Busan festival selection, while 2013’s “What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love” was nominated for the grand jury prize in the World Cinema – Dramatic strand at Sundance, and won the Netpac award at Rotterdam.

Her latest film, “Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts” premiered at Cannes, won the Netpac award for new Asian cinema at Poland’s Five Flavours Asian festival and shared the grand prize this week at the Tokyo FILMeX with fellow Indonesian Kamila Andini’s “The Seen and Unseen.” Both films play this week at the Singapore International Film Festival.

“Marlina” was unusual for Surya because it was the first time that she was working from somebody else’s story. It came from Indonesian veteran, Garin Nugroho, who will deliver a masterclass at Sgiff. She was initially reluctant about accepting the story, but producer

Top 25 Netflix Original stand-up comedy specials

Wesley Mead Dec 5, 2017

Looking for great stand-up on Netflix? We count down twenty-five highly recommended comedy specials on the streaming service...

In the face of ever-declining DVD sales, Netflix has quickly become the foremost place to discover new stand-up material. The streaming giant is on track to release over 50 exclusive specials in 2017 alone, signing big names (with big cheques) from both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.

There is a downside to this remarkable release schedule, though. With so many new specials out there, instantly accessible, it can sometimes feel like the smaller fish in the pond are getting short shrift. Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld have all been featured this year alone: with only so many column inches (and so much screen space) to occupy,

Outlander Recap: The Fine Print (Shop)
Need to catch up? Check out the previous Outlander recap here.

Talk about performance anxiety.

Both on- and off-screen, this week’s episode of Outlander has a daunting charge: Bring to life the scene fans of Diana Gabaldon’s books have spent years waiting to see — Jamie and Claire’s reunion in Alexander Malcolm’s print shop — and do it perfectly.

The Frasers’ first hours together in decades have to be fraught, but not depressing. They have to be romantic, but not syrupy. And above all, they have to be sexy — Jamie and his Sassenach do, after all, spend a

Is Jennifer Connelly In Spider-Man: Homecoming?

Update: Sony has now released the official cast list for the film, confirming Connelly’s involvement.

Spider-Man: Homecoming has one of the most impressive casts of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. The credits list is full of exciting names, including Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover and Jon Favreau. And that’s not even mentioning all the young and upcoming stars, like Zendaya, Laura Harrier, Angourie Rice and obviously, Tom Holland. Even in this late stage, however, just two weeks before the movie hits theatres, we might have just found out that another big name is set to appear.

Now that press screenings for Homecoming have begun, more and more details about are starting to leak out and earlier today, some eagle-eyed fans noticed that IMDb now lists Jennifer Connelly as appearing in the film. The movie database credits the actress in the role of ‘Karen/Suit Lady.’

In case you don’t know, IMDb can literally be edited by anyone, so we have to be wary of accepting this at face value. After all, this is the first time we’ve heard of the actress being attached to the production. However, going by the character credit, it sounds like the site’s saying she only has a cameo part in the film. As such, this small a role could possibly have slipped through the net and gone unnoticed by the media.

If this turns out to be true, Homecoming will mark Connelly’s third role in a comic book movie. Back in 1991, she appeared in The Rocketeer as the titular jetpacked hero’s girlfriend Jenny. Then in 2003, she starred as Betty Ross in Ang Lee’s Hulk.

It looks like we’ll have to wait until the film opens to see if this rumour holds any weight, but thankfully, there’s not too much longer to go now, as Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives on July 7th.

Twin Peaks – Five Questions About the New Third Season

Villordsutch with five questions about the new Twin Peaks

Back in 1991 when Laura Palmer sat with Special Agent Dale Cooper in the Black Lodge informing our FBI Agent, “I will see you again in twenty-five years.”, what we as viewers were not aware about at the time was that both David Lynch and Mark Frost were letting us know that we too, would be seeing the return of the Twin Peaks… a quarter of a century later!

When Twin Peaks began, back in 1990, the initial driving mystery was who killed Laura Palmer this then led to the supernatural Black & White lodge and Windom Earle. Amongst these mysteries lay the ‘white picket fences’ of a quiet American town, in the Pacific Northwest region, bordering Canada. However, behind this world of Cherry Pie, Homecoming Queens and Lumber Mills, there were secrets and lies everywhere and that’s before we bring in the supernatural.

CinemaCon: ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ Could Bring Ang Lee Back to the Oscar Table

CinemaCon: ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ Could Bring Ang Lee Back to the Oscar Table
Las Vegas — Since coming to the studio in 2013, Sony Pictures chairman (formerly TriStar Productions chairman) Tom Rothman hasn’t landed a film in the sweet spot of awards season yet. “The Walk” was a box office failure that couldn’t make it to the dance last year, while Will Smith starrer “Concussion” (inherited from former chair Amy Pascal’s tenure) couldn’t perform during the holiday season or secure notice from the Academy.

That could change with “Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk,” Ang Lee’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2012 drama “Life of Pi.” Notably, Rothman stood on the Colosseum stage at Caesar’s Palace here four years ago to debut footage from “Life of Pi” when he was still serving as chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment. Back again in a “different uniform,” as he put it, he kicked off this year’s presentation of Sony’s robust slate
