Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters Sign New Three-Year Overall Deal with ABC

Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas: WithAnAccentTV/YouTube

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have extended their overall deal with ABC. The showrunners of the dearly departed “Agent Carter” have signed a new three-year contract with the studio, Deadline reports. The new pact will see Fazekas and Butters serving as exec producers and showrunners on “The Gospel of Kevin,” a dramedy set to premiere this fall. The partners will also “continue to develop new projects through their Fazekas & Butters production company” under the deal.

“Working with ABC Studios is sort of like working with people who are fans — they’re creative and smart and funny and almost always support our weird ideas,” Fazekas and Butters said in a statement. “They’re great partners, and we’re happy to make our home here.”

Fazekas and Butters have worked with ABC for four years now. Along with the feminist-minded Marvel series “Agent Carter,” the two “have sold a number of projects to broadcast, cable, and streaming” including “Gospel of Kevin” and “The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez,” a revenge drama written by Charise Castro Smith. They also were the EPs and showrunners of “Resurrection,” a drama centered on people returning from the dead and their shocked loved ones. The series ran for two seasons. Fazekas and Butters introduced their production company “as a full-fledged, writer-friendly pod based at ABC Studios” in 2015.

Before beginning their professional relationship with ABC, the duo created the cult CW series “Reaper,” a comedy about a young man who literally does the devil’s bidding. “Law & Order: Svu,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Terra Nova,” and “Dollhouse” are among Fazekas and Butters’ other credits.

6 Women of Color in Supporting Roles Who Deserve to Star on Their Own Shows

25 May 2017 5:11 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

TV trends come and go, but who would’ve thought that, with all the focus on inclusion in the past few years, there would now be an uptick of, as IndieWire’s Michael Schneider puts it, “white dudes in crisis” on TV?

To fill the diversity void, the networks have added actors of color to supporting roles. It’s heartening to see that this has created a more realistic picture on TV of what the world looks like, such as the marriage between Zach Braff’s and Tiya Sircar’s characters on “Alex Inc.” representing the growing number of mixed-race marriages in America. Unfortunately, it’s also disappointing to see so many of these favorite actresses get shunted from one supporting role to the next.

‘Scandal’ Ending With Season 7: 6 Other Shows That Benefitted From A Planned End Date

10 May 2017 12:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

While “Scandal” has never failed to provide Shondaland fans with shocking twists and fabulous coats, the plotting of ABC’s political drama has seemed to lack momentum lately. While an election plotline that stretched out over Seasons 5 and 6 did give the show a bit more energy, the show has lacked the focus which made it great in its earlier years.

That’s why “Scandal” fans should consider it good news that TVLine is reporting the show will end with Season 7, a decision apparently made by creator Shonda Rhimes. As we’ve seen in the past, having a clear sense of when a show is ending (as opposed to an abrupt cancelation) means those involved can ensure things properly.  Below are just a few examples of series that benefitted from knowing that the end was nigh — and went out with a bang.

Joss Whedon May Direct Batgirl Standalone Film

30 March 2017 11:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

“Batgirl”: DC Comics

Joss Whedon is bringing another heroine to the screen. The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator is “nearing a deal” to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl film for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe, Variety reports. Whedon previously helmed 2012’s “The Avengers” and its 2015 sequel “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for DC Comics competitor Marvel.

Despite being one of the world’s most well-known and popular superheroines, this will be the first film to center on the fan favorite character, who “first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in ‘The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!’ Variety writes.

The project, which currently has no other producers attached, “originated in the past month.” So, it seems like things are moving quickly, thankfully — female-led films about caped crusaders are long overdue.

Two months before DC (finally!) announced a “Wonder Woman” movie and Marvel responded with a “Captain Marvel” adventure, Whedon was asked about the dearth of superheroines on the big screen. The “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” co-creator was admirably blunt in his response: “It’s a phenomenon in the industry that we call ‘stupid people.’” He continued, “There is genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned, quiet misogyny that goes on.” “There’s always an excuse,” he explained. “You hear ‘Oh, [female superheroes] don’t work because of these two bad ones [‘Catwoman’ and ‘Elektra’] that were made eight years ago.’”

While we’ll always rally for women directors to get the high-profile, big-budget gigs they are so often passed over for — especially if the gig in question centers on a superheroine — Whedon has spent his career depicting nuanced and empowering female characters. He famously conceived “Buffy” after watching “a lot of horror movies that starred pretty blonde girls who walk into alleys and get killed”; Buffy would be a girl who “could walk through an alley and take care of herself.” If a man is going to direct the Batgirl film, we’re thrilled it’s Whedon, who has never shied away from celebrating the strength of women and calling out sexism.

Whedon’s “Avengers” movies are the two highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe projects of all-time. Combined, they’ve made over $2.9 billion worldwide. His work on the small screen includes creating “Dollhouse,” “Firefly,” and “Angel.”

DC’s “Wonder Woman,” starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian warrior, hits theaters June 2. The film is directed by Patty Jenkins (“Monster”). “Suicide Squad” actress Margot Robbie will topline DC’s “Gotham City Sirens,” which centers on famous female villains from the DC universe including Robbie’s Harley Quinn. No word on when to expect the David Ayer-directed project. Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” led by Oscar winner Brie Larson, is scheduled for release March 8, 2019, but a director hasn’t been announced yet. Based on a shortlist that became public last summer, it seems that a female director is being sought to tell Carol Danvers’ story.

Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon.

‘True Detective’ Season 3: Despite Changes, the HBO Drama Still Has an Auteur TV Problem

The long-gestating third season of “True Detective” appears to have a little extra juice in it, with word that creator Nic Pizzolatto has written two episodes and David Milch has joined as a producer.

For those who loved the first installment, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two men investigating one crime over the course of years, the news might be exciting — but those who watched the second season might understandably be a little wary of the news.

That’s because “True Detective” Season 2 was further confirmation of a fact that savvy television viewers are more than aware of: Coming up with one good season of television does not make you a world-class showrunner.

This is especially true if one of the primary reasons for your show’s success — such as a key collaborator like Cary Fukunaga — departs. »

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and the Legacy of Joss Whedon 20 Years Later

9 March 2017 9:00 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

“Well, there's nobody who didn't have a horrible high school experience except for, like, one guy I met once,” Joss Whedon said while sitting down with Et on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997.

At the time, the show was in production on its second season, with everyone -- including stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), David Boreanaz (Angel) and Alyson Hannigan (Willow) -- returning to work on a bona fide hit for The WB. Whedon summed up his own high school experience as “constant humiliation and rejection,” an apt time period for a TV horror series. (Note: This was probably before they ever met, but I still like to believe the “one guy” he was referring to is Nathan Fillion.)

“I thought it would make a good show,” Whedon said. “I thought, I'll make a show about high school that's a horror movie just as my high school was, and that's »
