Well not exactly. It's more like penguins, giraffes and alligators...Oh my!! The Gosselins head to the Pittsburgh Zoo with all 8 kids. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive from there home so they head off early. Collin, the sleepy head, is hard to get up and going. Mady the drill sergeant tries to drag him out bed. Cara, the kind one, gentle consoles and talks to him. Kate shares that Mady is upset that all the little kids don't like her and they all love Cara. Kate says Mady doesn't understand that Cara's approach is "softer and more motherly." Maybe you ought to try that approach yourself sometime, Kate!
They need earplugs for the car ride as the noise from the 8 kids is magnified in the van. When they arrive at the zoo, the kids are a little grouchy. Luckily, they have a tram reserved just for them. It will take them everywhere in the zoo and even has room for the large triple strollers. They are assigned a personal escort which just happens to be the head Zookepper, Henry. He is a very sweet and patient man. He bonds with Aaden almost immediately, without being told that Aaden is the biggest animal lover of the family. Aaden acts like a different animal everyday at home. It was very sweet seeing them together. They also get a backstage pass that lets them get behind the scenes of certain exhibits which is very special.
First, they stop at the giraffes and the kids actually get to feed one. They hold up branches with leaves on it and the giraffe strips the leaves off with his tongue. Then they get to see a family of 10 gorillas. Jon says "didn't we moon one of us?". Kate does a double-take at Jon - "WHAT did you say?" He meant to say one of the gorillas mooned THEM!
Next its off to see the penguins. They get up close and personal with 2 penguins. One, named Flurry, walks right into the middle of all the kids. Kate says it's because the kids were about her height and thought they were one of her. Jon rolls his eyes and says "it's just a bird, Kate - it's just used to being around thousands of people. It's no big deal." All the kids take turns petting the penguin. Alexis, wild woman, was especially kind and gentle with the penguin.
Jon gets mad that Kate goes off inside the penguin exhibit and leaves him to discipline Collin. Kate says "doesn't the father usually handle these things?" (Nice passing of the buck, Kate!) Jon says "Yes, I DID handle it and then get yelled at for handling it!" Kate says "Can you not make problems today - I'm trying my hardest to have a fun day." Jon say "Yeah, you're trying REAL hard!" Kate says "As you can see I'm not the ONLY grouchy one!"
Then they head to the new Polar Bear exhibit. It is awesome! They have acrylic tubes that goes beneath the bears water tank, so you get to see them swimming right over your head and beside the wall right next to you. Then they go to see a crocodile because Alexis loves "aldigatots". Henry the zoologist fishes one out the tank and brings it right up to the kids. They get to touch it and hug it. One of the kids points to a crocodile and says "It's you mommy." Kate says "Gee thanks - well, I guess I've been called worse!"
Overall, the family has a great time. It was cute watching the kids fascination and awe with some of the animals. Kate's parting words are that is a beautiful zoo with very nice people. I have to agree!
