The eight Detective Conan movie is a step down from the previous installment, though it has it's moments (Possible small spoilers).
This was...a bit disappointing, after the great seventh entry in the Detective Conan movie series, this is a step back. Kaitou Kid is back, I guess because he's a popular character, which I don't really get, he's one of those bad guys, but no, he's a good guy really even though he's a thief and such. Anyway, the previous movie, which is the only other movie in the series I have seen and as such can only compare this to that, brilliantly mixed all these different mysteries and tied them all together nicely in the end. This movie only has one real mystery that's introduced around the 50 minute mark. Previous to that, it's all about going after Kaitou Kid and preventing him from stealing some diamond or whatever it was. Frankly, it's this first half that's really good, we get some suspense, when is Kid going to strike? He disguises himself as Kudou and joins the group, which of course leaves Conan with no choice but to be quiet. We get a brilliant action scene where Conan chases Kid, the latter escapes and the story shifts focus.
We get a murder on a plane, which is resolved rather quickly, the culprit is pointed out, motive explained and then the rest of the movie is about Conan and crew trying to land the darn plane. This is where the movie falters, how many movies haven't we seen where non-pilots have to land a plane? The movie spends way too much time on this, the CG of the plane is rather shoddy and it's just not that exciting, I must say though that there's a great crash scene. The movie doesn't really tie the two stories together all that well, Kaitou and his scheme is only part of the first 45 minutes or so, then his story is more or less forgotten and he's just sort of there on the plane, helping out. The first half is great, the second varies from dull to brief moments of excitement. I'm gad they included some detective work in the whole plane situation, where Conan and the others have to figure out how and where they can land the plane.
Overall, this is a decent, perfectly watchable movie, it's great in the first half and then becomes less and less interesting, for me at least with a standard Hollywood action/suspense plot. Not that bad, but a bit disappointing.
