Exclusive: Cary Elwes Reflects on the Saw Franchise & Discusses His New Memoir on The Princess Bride

6 November 2014 2:54 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

“As You Wish.” Anyone who grew up during the 1980’s should immediately recognize those three iconic words from Rob Reiner’s timeless classic The Princess Bride and now, they’re also the title of a new memoir from the film’s star, Cary Elwes, which has been tearing it up on the New York Times’ bestseller list since it was released a few weeks ago.

Elwes has more to celebrate these days too; the long-time actor who has appeared in a variety of projects like Glory, Hot Shots!, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Twister, Dracula, Kiss the Girls, The X-Files, Shadow of the Vampire and Liar Liar, has also been spending some time recently reminiscing about his role as Doctor Gordon in honor of Lionsgate’s recent re-release of James Wan’s Saw.

'Ouija' Scares Off 'Nightcrawler' on Halloween

1 November 2014 8:40 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Distracted by trick-or-treating and other assorted Halloween celebrations, moviegoers largely stayed away from theaters on Friday.Supernatural horror movie Ouija held on to first place ahead of Nightcrawler, though those positions will likely switch by the end of the weekend.Meanwhile, Before I Go To Sleep and Saw 10th Anniversary both bombed outside the Top 10.Ouija added $3.5 million on Friday, which was off 58 percent from its opening day. That's a surprising strong hold: the last time Halloween fell on a Friday, Saw V dropped 78 percent. Horror movies tend to play well on Halloween, so Ouija isn't going to hold up as well as the rest of the field through the weekend. Look for a three-day tally in the $10-to-$11 million range.Playing at 2,766 theaters, Nightcrawler opened to a solid $3.2 million on Friday. That's not on par with End of Watch ($4.6 million) or Drive (2011) ($4 million), though neither of those were competing with Halloween. »

Forecast (cont.): 'Saw' Re-Release, 'Before I Go to Sleep'

30 October 2014 11:34 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

<< Continued from "Weekend Forecast""If it's Halloween, it must be Saw." Lionsgate is banking that moviegoers will remember that old adage this weekend, when the 2004 horror classic is re-released in to over 2,000 theaters. The original Saw opened to a surprising $18.3 million on this weekend 10 years ago, and spawned a franchise that ruled the next four Halloweens. The first sequel (Saw II) was the highest-grossing installment with $87 million; grosses progressively declined to Saw V, which earned $56.7 million. All good things must eventually end, though, and Saw VI got stomped by word-of-mouth sensation Paranormal Activity in October 2009. The movie dropped around 50 percent from the previous installment, which led to a franchise-low $27.7 million gross. The following year, Saw 3D recovered to $45.7 million, though that was thanks to the addition of 3D pricing (during 3D's peak) and a "final chapter" bump.Re-releases have been a hit-or-miss endeavor lately. 3D re-releases for The Lion King, »

John Travolta sports amazing new beard and ponytail on film set

13 October 2014 7:49 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

John Travolta was sporting a beard reminiscent of Brad Pitt's disastrous 2010 decorative facial hair as he filmed scenes for his latest movie Life on the Line.

Travolta plays an eccentric powerline technician called Beau whose dangerous high-wire job causes friction within his family life, before he and his fellow linemen are hit by the arrival of a massive storm.

He stars alongside Kate Bosworth and Final Destination star Devin Sawa.

The action drama is being directed by David Hackl and produced by Marro Films and Elite Film Productions, with Marro CEO Marvin Peart explaining: "The last film made in and around the lineman industry was in 1937, Slim the Lineman, and starred Henry Fonda.

"It's an honour and a career highlight to tell this modern-day story about these unsung heroes."

The 60-year-old actor was pictured on set sporting not one but two ponytails, in both his hair and impressively long black beard. »

Actor makes directing debut on fighting doc

6 October 2014 5:56 PM, PDT | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Actor-turned-director Nick Barkla has completed his first project, documentary Inside Fighter, and is developing a feature drama and another doco.

Inside Fighter follows Australian pro boxer Frank LoPorto, who was 33 when he had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight Wba world light middleweight champion Austin Trout in El Paso, Texas.

Given just five weeks to prepare for the championship bout as a replacement for a boxer who broke his hand, LoPorto was beaten badly, causing him shame and embarrassment.

The 50-minute film will have its world premiere at the St Tropez Antipodes Film Festival next week after Barkla scored an invite from the festival.s president Bernard Bories, whom he met at Miff this year.

Film Victoria funded the development of the screenplay but Barkla funded 90% of the production from his own pockets.

Producer shows faith in uplifting movies

22 September 2014 8:07 PM, PDT | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Producer Steve Jaggi is convinced audiences are hankering for films with positive, joyful themes, an antidote to the dark subjects often favoured by filmmakers.

Putting his money where his mouth is, Jaggi launched The Incubator last year through his Indefatigable Pictures banner to develop and produce life-affirming films.

The first three projects to benefit from that initiative are either completed or in post. All are from first-time filmmakers, part of Jaggi.s plan to help foster the international careers of Australian creatives.

Based on a true story, Skin Deep is the saga of a young woman who is diagnosed with terminal melanoma and meets a stranger who gives her the courage to embrace life. The screenplay is by Monica Zanetti, who had melanoma. Rosie Lourde is the producer and the director is Jonnie Leahy. Zara Zoe plays the protagonist and Zanetti portrays the stranger.

Here's What We Know About Final Destination 6 (Not Much)

21 August 2014 3:43 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Saw V, Paranormal Activity 4, the last three Halloweens...every franchise has a moment where the driving forces throw their hands up and say "fuck it." The Final Destination did more than kill its entire cast, it prevented U.S. audiences from flocking to the surprisingly great Final Destination 5.

It also made the studio gun-shy with respect to making another.

Has that changed?

No. Not yet.

Last year we brought news of an interesting pitch for a Medieval Final Destination movie. That doesn't appear to be in the cards, but neither is today's story about a Russia-set sequel.

Our friends at Bloody Disgusting reached out to a source close to the franchise for comment on the rumors, which were squashed instantly. Bloody went on to report that Warner Brothers and New Line are talking about making another film, but they have no story as of yet.

Fear not, kids. »

The Fear Monger: Uncovered Shaun Of The Dead Developments And The Babadook Trailer Terrifies

Good day, extinguishers of all things solar. This past week gave us two equally grating slices of horror: Leatherface as a teenager and Let.s Be Cops getting released the same week as everything going on in Ferguson, Missouri. To take your mind off all that, check out the limited release of Jeff Baena.s zombie comedy Life After Beth, which uses winning performances to bring life to a tonally fluctuating plotline. How is Aubrey Plaza not in everything at this point? In other news, Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston has joined the cast of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is finally on the road to getting made. Saw V and Grizzly director David Hackl is taking to Kickstarter to get partial funding for his next project, the Wwi thriller Earthworks. On September 13th, the documentary Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary will make its world premiere in »

Director David Hackl Unveils His Earthworks

14 August 2014 4:56 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

War is hell, and Saw V director David Hackl is out to prove it's a lot more hellish than you may think with his latest film, Earthworks. There's just one small detail... he's looking to you to help fund a portion of it! Read on for details.

Earthworks is a WWII horror film that follows five American doughboys on their first night in the trenches of the Western Front as they experience the living (and dead) hell that is No Man’s Land. It is to be directed by Hackl and produced by UK outfit Bluebeard Pictures.

Earthworks exists in an isolated trench/No Man’s Land set and creates a sense of abandonment from the start... Five young American soldiers enter France, and on their first night at an Allied trench, everything goes wrong very quickly. Caught up in a beguiling fog, the young characters each come to different but understandable decisions. »

Saw: The Complete Movie Collection Blu-ray, Digital Coming in September

7 August 2014 7:22 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Lionsgate stopped cranking out Saw films roughly four years ago and that decision opened the door for the inevitable compilation Blu-ray box set, which has taken its time materializing. A listing  at online retailer Amazon.com has finally confirmed the set's existence and provided us with a September 23, 2014 release date for what Lionsgate is calling Saw: The Complete Movie Collection.

You have to take a stroll down memory lane to recollect how many Saw films Lionsgate produced between 2004 and 2010. The horror franchise started with Saw (2004) and then delivered annual entries with Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009) and Saw 3D (2010).

Saw: The Complete Movie Collection will include the unrated cuts of all seven Saw films on Blu-ray and Digital HD across three discs. It would be unfortunate if Saw 3D wasn't presented in 3D, but that's a possibility considering there's no mention of 3D on the box art. »

Thomas Jane, Billy Bob Thornton Square Off Against One Pissed Off Bear In New Grizzly Trailer!!

28 July 2014 2:59 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

I absolutely love horror movies involving pissed off animals. Maybe it’s because we’re so used to loving them in general, that when a horror-ish film comes along that throws a big wrench into that, it makes for some fun entertainment. With that all being said, Saw V director David Hackl is returning behind the helm of the awesome looking Grizzly, which was written by J.R. Reher and Bunraku director Guy Moshe.  After checking out the newly released trailer, I’ve gotta say, it looks pretty great, heavy on gore and boasting an impressive lineup of really good actors. Hackl and co. already had me with just saying it was a killer bear movie, but  they had to throw The Mist‘s Thomas Jane, X-men‘s James Marsden, and Billy Bob Thornton into the mix, and well..badassery indeed folks. Thornton absolutely killed it as Lorne Malvo on season one of FX’s Fargo, »

B-Horror with a great cast in the ‘Grizzly’ trailer

25 July 2014 9:51 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Billy Bob Thornton starring in a B-movie creature feature should be enough for anyone to be sold, but now we have a trailer for Grizzly (formally known as Endangered and Red Machine) from Saw V director, David Hackl. The film follows two estranged brothers (James Marsden and Thomas Jane) and their girlfriends as they are hunted by a savage grizzly bear. The film doesn’t seem like it will transcend any monster movie tropes, but it looks like it might be some really bloody fun. This film may seem very similar to the 1976 film also called Grizzly, but nowhere does anyone seem to calling this new film a remake. The 1976 film itself is widely considered one of many late 70s era Jaws knockoffs, so we’re now in a time of knockoffs of knockoffs. Seriously though, this does look like it could make for a good time at the movies. »

Grizzly stars: James Marsden, Piper Perabo, Billy Bob Thornton and Thomas Jane. A trailer for this feature has recently been released. The story begins with several disappearances. Loggers and rangers make great bear food, but this grizzly bear has his sights on two brothers. Blood streaks and claw marks will mar many of the characters, before this 500 lb beast is overcome. The trailer for Grizzly is full of gore. Actor Billy Bob Thornton can be seen marked by this great beast. Other minor characters are reduced to bloody pools and Grizzly looks like a film for gorehounds. The official trailer for the film is below. Release Date: 2014. Director: David Hackl. Crime Time: Top 10 Serial Killers in Movies

21 May 2014 2:47 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The phrase "serial killer" is most often attributed to the late FBI agent Robert Ressler, who coined the term along with fellow agent John Douglas as they began profiling and researching murder cases in the 1970s. His work led him to have direct contact with serial killers, with Ressler apparently receiving a painting from killer John Wayne Gacy with an inscription that apparently read: "Dear Bob Ressler, you cannot hope to enjoy the harvest without first laboring in the fields. Best wishes and good luck. Sincerely, John Wayne Gacy, June 1988."

The inscription sounds like it came out of a movie, which perhaps isn't so surprising since Hollywood has been making movies about serial killers since the silent era. Sometimes these movies are about real-life killers, other times they are based on real-life killers or events, or, and perhaps even more disturbing, they are based on nothing but imagination. Either way, »
