Jean-Claude Van Johnson pilot review

Louisa Mellor Aug 23, 2016

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a fictionalised version of himself in this action movie spoof Amazon comedy pilot…

Like a supermodel launching a make-up line or an athlete turning coach, playing a parody version of yourself is one way for past-their-prime movie stars to keep the cheques coming. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s TV roles so far have exclusively been as him - on Friends in 1996, on Las Vegas in 2004, on Robot Chicken in 2009 and in double denim and a mullet wig for Coors Light since 2012. Now he’s playing himself in Amazon comedy pilot Jean-Claude Van Johnson, an action-movie spoof from The Expendables writer Dave Callaham.

More properly, he plays a fictionalised Jean-Claude Van Damme, not only a former action movie star but also a former undercover operative, part of a Hollywood network that uses movie-making as a front for covert black ops. (Should Amazon pick it up to series, »

Film Review: ‘Kickboxer: Vengeance’

22 August 2016 5:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After a summer notable for many expensive action-movie disappointments in which even concepts traditionally associated with hands-on stuntwork (i.e. “The Legend of Tarzan”) were overwhelmed by CGI, there’s something refreshing about the admittedly dopey but good-natured, straightforward mano a mano of “Kickboxer: Vengeance.” This de facto remake of the 1989 martial arts favorite, with Jean-Claude Van Damme returning a quarter century later (albeit this time as the hero’s wise elder trainer), improves on the boilerplate original without really changing its essentials.

This revamp (which ignores several interim direct-to-video sequels Van Damme did not participate in) is a bit shorter, a tad more stylish, and utilizes the same clichés a little less ponderously. Brainiacs need not apply to this otherwise unreconstructed testosterone-a-thon, but of its type, “Vengeance” is well-crafted good fun — and good proof that you don’t need more than two hours or $100 million to give ticket buyers »

Jean Claude Van Johnson – “Pilot” Episode Review

20 August 2016 6:30 PM, PDT | AsianMoviePulse | See recent AsianMoviePulse news »

When i first heard the news Jean Claude Van Damme would be starring in his own TV series, i was very excited. Here, Van Damme plays himself and to be honest he is very good at it, showcasing his acting ability flicking through dramatic to comedy with ease (Yes we get to see some of his trademark kicks).

Jean Clade Van Johnson opens with Jean Claude Van Damme staring at the camera, speaking about his old films such as Bloodsport and Timecop, ““My name is Jean-Claude Van Damme and I used to be super famous.Maybe you’ve seen Timecop, which is like Looper only a million times better” and how right he is.

He has it all, his own mansion, own car, own perfume and women on the side – but what he doesn’t have is the woman he loves and the big fame anymore.

TV Review – Jean-Claude Van Johnson – Pilot Episode

Tom Jolliffe reviews the pilot episode of Jean-Claude Van Johnson

For The Muscles From Brussels, Mr Jean-Claude Van Damme, the notion of sending himself up is nothing new. Many stars may find the idea of mocking themselves as too much for their ego to handle, but Jean-Claude (despite often being accused of having no small ego himself) has happily played the fool in the last few years. It started with the surprising Jcvd, in which he played an exaggerated version of himself caught up in a Post Office Heist. It remains the most critically acclaimed film of his career and a film that struck a chord with critics and on the festival circuit.

After that Van Damme never quite managed to escape direct to video action hell, albeit with his brief cinematic comeback in The Expendables 2. Again that film was a complete send up of the genre that brought »

The Muscles from Brussels sports sleep attire and sense of self-parody in first Jean-claude Van Johnson trailer

19 August 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Jean-Claude Van Damme, world-renowned action hero of countless eighties and nineties B-movie flicks, is back in older yet no less muscular fashion. Just one month after Van Damme helped kick off Fantasia 2016 as Master Durand in opening night film Kickboxer Vengeance we see the Belgian actor assume the role of Jean-Claude Van Johnson in Amazon’s upcoming series of the same name. Promising to be equal parts Hollywood satire and send-up of Jcvd’s martial artist status, the first trailer follows the ennui-filled morning routine of an aged and lonesome movie star who looks back on former glory as he Segways himself onto the sidewalk to pick up a new issue of Variety. Slight, yet punctuated by nostalgia-inducing French music, the trailer already leaves you wanting...

Pilot for Jcvd's Ridiculously Farcical Action Comedy Jean-claude Van Johnson is a Giant Leap Forward in the Actor's Career. Watch and Vote!

"Maybe you’ve seen TimeCop, which is like Looper, starring Bruce Willis but like a million times better." Guess who's back? Back again.  It’s no secret I’m the biggest Jean-Claude Van Damme fan in the world. If you think you have a one-up on me, meet me at the Kumite. (Caveat: Must be under 5’5’’ and weight less than 140 pounds.)  Jcvd has seen glory and hell in his lifetime, and over the last few years, approaching his golden years, he’s having the time of his life.  He gained critical acclaimed for his honest, poignant portrayal of himself in the terrific Jcvd (that monologue, man. Deep.) This film blew fans and critics alike away — to date, he’s the only action star to acknowledge his faults on film and...

Amazon Pilot Reviews: ‘The Tick,’ Jill Soloway’s ‘I Love Dick’ & ‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson,’ Ranked

19 August 2016 8:19 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Jean-Claude Van Johnson

“’Timecop’ is like ‘Looper’ with Bruce Willis, but a million times better,” is just one of the gems spoken in “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” which is as gloriously ridiculous as its title.

What the Amazon pilot lacks in plot — action star Jean-Claude Van Damme comes out of retirement to act as a private contractor specializing in kicking ass and doing the splits — it makes up for with indiscriminate jabs at everything and anyone, including its star, Hollywood, pretentious foodies and even America’s Undulating Beefcake, Channing Tatum. A surprising appearance by Phylicia Rashad, who gamely plays Jean-Claude’s agent, is a comic revelation. She delivers the most absurd movie pitches with such enthusiasm that we’re ready to sign up for the “P.F. Chang’s” biopic ourselves.

The only real disappointment is the lackluster treatment of Jean-Claude’s love interest Vanessa (Kat Foster), who isn’t given much to work with story-wise. »

Newswire: Christopher Lambert to pump fighters full of steroids in Kickboxer: Retaliation

9 August 2016 8:55 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Cineastes have long lamented Hollywood’s seeming obsession with reboots. But filmgoers can rejoice knowing that Jurassic World, Tyrmynytr: Gynysys, and all those Spider-Man origin stories were all to a higher purpose. The film industry was simply honing its craft before a great undertaking, namely rebooting the cinematic oeuvre of Jean-Claude Van Damme.

And while fans of the Muscles From Brussels have patiently waited for the long-gestating Bloodsport reboot so it can take its time capturing the subtle tone and complex mythology of the original, a rebooted Kickboxer series will be as unrelenting as Jcvd himself. Kickboxer: Vengeance high-kicks into theaters in September, and accomplished stuntman-turned-action-star Alain Moussi is already hard at work on next year’s Kickboxer: Retaliation. Game of ThronesHafþór Júlíus Björnsson has already been confirmed as Moussi’s opponent in the ring (a role Dave Bautista plays in the first film), but if real-life boxing »

Spoooooon! Amazon today announced that everyone’s favorite antennaed superhero, The Tick, will be back to save the world on August 19. How long it will last, that’s still to be determined as Amazon is treating this as a pilot process to choose their new comedy series. The reboot of the short-lived live-action TV series comes almost 15 years after it went off the air in early 2002. Originally a comic book and later an animated series, the Fox version of The Tick starred Patrick Warburton in the title role. The reboot will feature Peter Serafinowicz as the bug in blue as well as Griffin Newman as his sidekick, Arthur. The streaming service also announced that a couple other of its comedy series will get their trial runs on the same day. I Love Dick (insert your own joke here) is based on the 1997 novel by Chris Kraus. It stars Kevin Bacon, »

Kickboxer remake: the first trailer

Simon Brew Jul 18, 2016

Kickboxer: Vengeance arrives in cinemas in September, with Jcvd on board. Here's the first trailer...

Heading to cinemas later this year is the new take on Kickboxer, that’s going by the name of Kickboxer: Vengeance. It appears to be Jean-Claude Van Damme-endorsed too, given that the muscly Brusselly one is appearing in the new film.

Alongside him in the cast? Well, he’s passing the torch to Alain Moussi, with Dave Bautista, Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre and Cain Velasquez in the cast too. John Stockwell has directed the movie, which lands in cinemas in September.

What’s more, we’ve got the first trailer for the movie too.

And here’s the synopsis too…

Eric and Kurt Sloane are the descendants of a well-known Venice, California-based family of martial artists. Kurt has always been in older brother, Eric’s shadow, as he lacks the instincts needed to become a champion. »

9 great modern B-movie directors

They might not be at the level of John Carpenter or Wes Craven yet, but meet the directors who are keeping the B-movie flag flying...

B-Movies. Exploitation flicks. Genre cinema. Someone has to make them, and here is a list compiling the best of the today’s crop of filmmakers who are unabashed in their love of genres, and have honed their talents producing enjoyable and sometimes great B-Movies. While all the movies they make may not be great, do not dismiss them. The seeds of great things are contained in their filmographies, and it would come as no surprise if one or two of these guys are able to attain the same heights as luminaries like Hill, Carpenter, Craven and Corman.

There is a ‘Hard Target 2’ and it looks amazing

16 June 2016 12:41 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Hard Target 2 trailer: John Woo produces a sequel to his hard-hitting Jcvd action film from 1993.

The Hard Target 2 trailer is brief, but awesome in every way.

Hard Target 2 trailer

Remember John Woo‘s brilliant Hard Target starring Jean Claude Van Damme from the mid-1990s? Well, apparently there is a direct-to-dvd sequel starring Scott Adkins and Rhona Mitra, and it looks awesome.

The original was full of such gems as Jcvd high-kicking rich folk, the wonderful Lance Hendrickson as chief bad-guy and the muscles from Brussels quite literally punching a snake the f**k out. Remember this?

Hard Target 2 will be heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the United States from September.

Scott Adkins recently told Impact: “I guess I am continuing to walk the path previously walked by Jcvd (laughing) It’s just a coincidence I promise you, but yes, I do keep getting involved with projects that are sequels to his earlier work or I am co-starring with him… the director really knows how to shoot action and get the best look and epic production value for his movies… there are moments that pay homage to the original and we are doing everything we can to deliver a worthy sequel… and a hell of an action film in its own right.”

The film also stars Robert Knepper (Prison Break), Ann Truong (Sonnigsburg) and Temuera Morrison (Green Lantern), and will continue “the human hunt” in the jungles between Burma and Thailand.

Hard Target 2 trailer

Some official blurb, followed by the Hard Target 2 trailer…

Forced into a deadly cat-and-mouse game, a disgraced mixed martial arts fighter is hunted through the jungles of Southeast Asia in Hard Target 2, wrapped production in Thailand. A no-holds-barred battle for survival through treacherous terrain inspired by John Woo’s hard-driving 1993 action-thriller, Hard Target 2 Unrated Edition premieres exclusively on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD Fall 2016 from Universal 1440 Entertainment, the original content production arm of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Watch a brief Hard Target 2 trailer below. We are all kinds of excited.
