Looking at What Went Wrong with The Ward: A Movie Review

27 December 2011 4:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*here be spoilers.

Director: John Carpenter.

Writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen.

Cast: Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer and Danielle Panabaker.

The main problem with John Carpenter’s The Ward is that it tried too hard to be understood. Had it been subtler in its approach, than quite focused in providing some cheap scares, then just maybe, the darkness Kristen (Amber Heard) has been feeling can become real.

The issue here is that Carpenter, with writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen were out to recreate some of the magic from Shutter Island, released earlier in the 2010 year, whilst their product was delayed. It did not screen until September at the Toronto Film Festival. Its theatrical release did not happen until a year later, so audiences are not saying that they had seen this movie before.

But The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari this product is not. Some imitators will succeed and others will fail. »

Leonardo DiCaprio Is 'The Devil in the White City'

18 December 2011 9:12 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

If it seems like Leonardo DiCaprio has been churning out one awesome movie after another for years now, well, it's because he has been. "J. Edgar," "Inception," "Shutter Island," "The Departed" "The Aviator" and next year's hotly anticipated "The Great Gatsby" -- most actors would be thrilled to have that many quality films over an entire career, much less a handful of years. The only question is, where can he go from here?

How about to the depths of hell itself?

Metaphorically speaking, of course: According to Deadline, DiCaprio is attached to star as notoriously sadistic -- and prolific -- serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes in the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of the acclaimed true crime bestseller "The Devil in the White City." Is there any juicy role DiCaprio isn't going to get?

Here's some background for the less literary among you: Written by author Erik Larson, "The Devil in the White City: Murder, »

‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ interview with actor Gary Oldman

15 December 2011 3:44 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

With memorable roles in movies like The Professional, JFK, and even Air Force One, Gary Oldman has gained a reputation as the villain (who usually) screams a lot. This stereotype of his legacy is now retorted by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, in which Oldman plays George Smiley, a quiet ex-spy who is assigned to find a mole within the British secret service. In the film, directed by Tomas Alfredson, Oldman plays opposite the likes of Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, John Hurt, and more.

I sat down with the magnetic Gary Oldman in a roundtable interview to discuss the way he gets into character, why he won’t run anymore, and how Christopher Nolan helped guide him towards his latest acting direction. For very good measure, Oldman also threw in an impersonation of Al Pacino.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens in Chicago on December 16.

Jane Fonda To Play Cable News Network CEO in Aaron Sorkin's HBO Drama

15 December 2011 3:51 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

It's been announced that Jane Fonda has signed on for a recurring role in Aaron Sorkin's new HBO drama series. The as-yet-untitled project is set at a cable news network, and TVLine reports that Fonda will play Leona Lansing, CEO of the network's parent company.

Lansing is described as "a titan and her corporate concerns often conflict with the reporting of the news outlet she owns." Will Fonda be drawing upon her own real-life experiences to help her flesh out the character? She was married to CNN founder Ted Turner for ten years, so it will be interesting to see if her character is anything like her ex-husband.

Fonda recently told Rosie O'Donnell that her marriage to Turner helped her prepare for her role in "Monster-in-Law": "Living with him for ten years I learned that you can be completely outrageous and over the top and be totally lovable. »

Interview: Gary Oldman Finds Career Role in ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’

13 December 2011 8:52 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Gary Oldman is a living legend. He’s just as fascinating in person as one would hope after seeing him dominate his craft in films like “Sid and Nancy,” “JFK,” “The Professional,” “True Romance,” “The Fifth Element,” “Hannibal,” “Harry Potter,” “The Dark Knight,” and much more. With topics varying from his desire to play more restrained roles at this point in his career to Al Pacino’s typecasting to why he considers himself like Mr. Potato Head, the only regret one would have after speaking to Mr. Oldman is that it can’t happen every week.

Arguably his career-best performance lands on Friday in Chicago when Oldman brings “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” to the big screen. In the film, he plays George Smiley, a retired British agent brought back in when it’s learned that there may be a mole at the highest levels of his former organization. Oldman sat down with HollywoodChicago. »

Ender’S Game Finds its War Hero?

Ender’s Game, the movie, is beginning to really take shape. We have heard a handful of casting rumors and it seems many deals are currently under negotiation. It was just last week we learned Hugo star Asa Butterfield was circling the starring role in this adaptation of the Orson Scott Card classic sci fi tale. Now the motion picture may have found its first war hero.

According to THR, Sir Ben Kingsley is talking to filmmakers now about being added to the Ender’s Game cast. Kingsley would be taking the role of a legendary war hero long assumed to be dead.

Asa will portray Ender Wiggin, a child who struggles with being picked on by bullies in his everyday life. Hey, that’s a timely topic today! But Ender’s life changes drastically when he proves to be highly skilled at a “three-dimensional, »

David Cronenberg Opts Out Of Adaptation Of Dennis Lehane's 'Animal Rescue'; Alexander Payne & George Clooney Sought To Direct

12 December 2011 11:35 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As far as book-to-movie adaptations go, Dennis Lehane has had an enviable track record. While he's only had three novels brought to the big screen, they've resulted in both critical acclaim and box office success, with "Mystic River," "Gone Baby Gone" and "Shutter Island" all originating from the pages of his books. You might remember way back at the beginning of 2010, it was reported that Lehane was set to adapt this own short story (until then, he had let other writers to do the job) of his short story "Animal Rescue" featured in the anthology book he edited "Boston Noir." That was the last we heard of it, but over the summer, David Cronenberg quietly became attached to direct but it appears that didn't last very long. Twitch reports that Cronenberg is now off the project, with Fox looking at both Alexander Payne and George Clooney as possible replacements. The »
