The 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

31 December 2009 9:38 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

For many people, a new year means a time for new habits, resolutions, and fresh starts.  For myself though, it’s always been about one thing and one thing only:  365 days of brand-new films!

And of course, Hollywood being Hollywood, there’s the usual litany of sequels, super-hero spectacle, remakes, and state-of-the-art Hollywood summer craziness filled with all manner of digital monsters and explosions.  But there’s also new films from Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and - most intriguing of all - a ballet thriller from Darren Aronofsky.  Come on, admit it - you know you got excited when you heard the words “ballet thriller!”  All that, and we also see the return of Michael Douglas in his seminal role as Gordon Gecko.

Read on after the jump for my list of the ten films that - for reasons both good and bad - I’m most looking forward to seeing in the new year. »

What to see in 2010

Can Martin Scorsese pull off a horror movie? Is Glasgow the new Venice? And what's Ricky Gervais up to in Reading? Our critics pick next year's hottest tickets

Film

Cemetery Junction

Having conquered Hollywood, Ricky Gervais is coming home. With his long-time collaborator Stephen Merchant, he has set out to create a British film in the tradition of Billy Liar and the Likely Lads – and of course his own masterpiece The Office – about three blokes working for the Prudential insurance company in Gervais's hometown of Reading. Released on 7 April.

A Single Man

The smart money says Colin Firth will be bringing home a certain gold, bald-headed statuette for his performance as a bereaved gay man in Los Angeles. Based on the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood, the movie – fashion designer Tom Ford's directorial debut – follows one day in the life of Firth's literature academic as he confronts his own mortality. Released on 12 February. »

New Photos from 2010 Movies - Part 1

30 December 2009 3:13 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

It's a slow week for casting news and there are no new films opening in wide release this Friday, but that doesn't mean there's nothing worth reporting on. With 2010 just days away (seriously, where did 2009 go?), studios are starting to release details on their upcoming movies and it's looking like 2010 could be a pretty incredible year at the box office. I'll have the breakdown on 2010's big comedy and action films soon, but in the meantime here's a batch of new photos from some of the movies hitting theaters in the next 12 months:

Clash of the Titans Photos - Sam Worthington/Gemma Arterton

Cop Out First Photo - Bruce Willis/Tracy Morgan

Daybreakers Photos - Ethan Hawke/Willem Dafoe

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

2010 Winter movie preview

28 December 2009 9:17 AM, PST | Tampa Film Examiner | See recent Tampa Film Examiner news »

What's worth checking out inside?

The Winter movie release schedule for 2010 is pretty much a roll-of-the-dice for moviegoers.  Obvious choices like Shutter Island and Alice in Wonderland will attract audiences for a variety of reasons.  Will there be anything else that will standout over the next few months though?  Here's a look at some possible flicks to check out and ones you may want to avoid.

2010 begins with the uber-popular vampire genre in Daybreakers.  Vampires are still a draw these days and that alone will have people heading to the theaters.  Having a top-notch cast that includes Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe could give this movie some life (pun intended).  The story seems to be predictable though, and having vampires that aren't terrifying is getting a bit stale.  In the end, fangs=$$$.  This is one of those times where one should read the critics take on this before going in blind. »

The 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

27 December 2009 10:16 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

So you’ve unwrapped all of your Christmas presents, received three copies of District 9 from multiple uncommunicative family members, and the year of 2009 is about to be wrapped up. The debate is over: 2009 has been a great year for film. So what do you do now?

Why, start thinking about what’s around the corner, of course!

While there’s less in the way of interesting sci-fi, as 2009 will surely be remembered for, 2010 has plenty of interesting new films in store, as well as some remakes, reboots and sequels. Here’s a list of the 15 most anticipated films of 2010, in order of release, followed by a minefield of movies you might consider avoiding.

The Wolfman (February 12)

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

New Posters for 'Shutter Island,' 'Kick-Ass,' 'Eat, Pray, Love' and 'Robin Hood'

I really don't understand studio thinking when they decide to debut trailers, pictures and posters online right before the holidays. People are taking time off of work and spending time with their families, not browsing the Internet... at least not the way they typically would. Nevertheless, that appears to be exactly what's going on as not only has the recent rash of new trailers continued, but four new posters have just arrived.

Featured below are new posters for Robin Hood, Shutter Island, Eat, Pray, Love and Kick-Ass. You can click on all of them for larger looks in their respective galleries.

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

The Best Films of 2009

22 December 2009 11:57 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Matt Singer: We entered 2009 with a new president who promised to bring our country hope. But looking back at the year in film, I don't see a lot of hope; I see a lot of grief and despair. Oh sure, the box office charts were dominated by your now-typical assortment of franchises, spin-offs, reboots and sequels -- a major cause of grief and despair for some -- but you also had enough apocalypse movies to fill a book on Biblical prophecy. Even some of the obligatory superheroes got dark: the world (spoiler alert!) doesn't end in "Watchmen," but it comes awfully close.

There was an air of doom in certain quarters of the film industry this year too, as the effects of the bad economy rippled through everything from festival attendance to the shriveling ranks of working film critics. Examining my own list of the year's best, I find that »

Leonardo Brings a Buddy to Holiday Shop

Leonardo DiCaprio and a friend stopped by the Beverly Center on Sunday to do some last minute holiday shopping. He tried to go incognito with his usual low cap routine, though Leo had to trade his hat for a helmet when he hopped on his motorcycle to go home. After a Summer full of travels and a recent getaway to Mexico, Leo has been reconnecting with old friends like Lindsay Lohan during the last few weeks at home in California. He'll be back to collecting the frequent flier miles in early 2010, though, when he starts promoting Shutter Island before its release in February.
