King Ian has died so Valiant, Arn, and Rowanne travel to Kengary to see if his nephew or the other choice for the throne, Duncan, will prove a devoted ally to Camelot. When they arrive, though, they are attacked by a group accusing them of kidnapping some of their people as slaves. After they meet Duncan and Ian's nephew Baron Frederick Von Holsing, Duncan is crowned. The three learn Frederick is responsible for the enslavement of members of a clan Kengary is at war with, but he attacks and sends Valiant himself into slavery, takes Rowanne a prisoner until she agrees to give herself to him, and leaves Arn for dead. Duncan learns that the confusing report about the slave-trade Valiant gave him is true and who is behind it, but has no way of getting proof and forces to stop him. And, after Arn returns to Camelot wounded but too weak to explain how, the others have to escape their separate situations so Duncan himself will not be blamed when King Arthur's forces arrive.
