Cameron Crowe's "We Bought a Zoo"

28 December 2011 5:15 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

"Big gestures are common currency in Cameron Crowe country," begins Vadim Rizov at GreenCine Daily, and that's the gist, too, of Sam Adams's piece for Slate: "He's made bad movies, but never a bad trailer." Vadim: "John Cusack holding a boombox over his head in Say Anything..., Jerry Maguire's much-quoted romantic highlights ('You had me at hello'), an unironically lovestruck-and-desperate run alongside a moving bus in Almost Famous. Crowe openly states his method in We Bought a Zoo: 'All you need is 20 seconds of insane courage,' dad Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) tells lovestruck son Dylan (Colin Ford). 'And I promise you, something great will come of it.' This is both a baldly stated stab at future quotability and a declaration of Crowe's full investment: every time his characters do something outsized and cornball, he's the one hoping a great moment rather than a fiasco will emerge from it. »

Ender’s Game Adds Han Solo and Zombieland Survivor

It hasn’t been a bad year for actor Harrison Ford, has it? The actor forever remembered as Han Solo of Star Wars, as Indiana Jones, and The Fugitive, is about to take on another high profile sci fi role. Yes, Blade Runner‘s Deckard is headed to the set of Ender’s Game. He’s got company, too!

In 2011, Extraordinary Measures, Morning Glory and Cowboys & Aliens were all released to DVD. That means you can give the gift of Mr. Ford for the holidays. Also this year, now that it is winding to a close, will be remembered for the announcement that Ford is ready for Ender’s Game, along side Asa Butterfield as Ender Wiggin, Hailee Steinfeld as Petra Arkanian and Brendan Meyer as Stilson. Variety also said Abigail Breslin will join in.

Breslin is known for being Little Miss Sunshine, »

The underappreciated film gems of 2011

15 December 2011 6:28 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As the world puts together its ‘best of 2011’ round-ups, we salute the films that deserve just a bit more love than they’re getting...

Next week, we’ll be bringing you our film of the year round-up, as voted by the many people who contribute to Den Of Geek. Of course, democracy has its problems, in that it means that some lesser-seen films don’t tend to gravitate up such lists, and with that in mind, we wanted to take some time to salute the many cinematic treats that many not be winning all the awards and the plaudits come end of year round-ups, but really deserve seeking out.

In alphabetical order, then...

Intelligent, atmospheric and thought-provoking: it’s remarkable just how much director Mike Cahill managed to achieve in this low-budget debut feature. Brit Marling delivers a vulnerable and honest performance as Rhoda, a young girl whose »

Newcomer Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford Lock Lead Roles In Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson Biopic '42'

9 December 2011 5:19 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Oh, Harrison Ford. As we documented in our Essentials feature in the summer, it's a long time since the actor, once one of the most reliable stars in Hollywood, has been on form. And it seems that every potential comeback, from "Hollywood Homicide" and "Crossing Over" to last year's "Morning Glory" and this year's "Cowboys & Aliens" has fallen short, even when, as in the last two cases, the actor's seemed to made more of an effort not to sleepwalk through the picture.  The actor's still searching for that elusive non-Indy comeback role, and this week has seen some potentials circling, with the star being linked to the elder role in Gavin Hood's sci-fi epic "Ender's Game." Ben Kingsley took that part, but Ford's seemed to take a far more interesting role, as a press release obtained by Deadline revealed that Ford has signed on to the Jackie Robinson biopic, »

Harrison Ford Offered Role in Jackie Robinson Biopic, Possibly Up for Ender’s Game?

9 December 2011 4:38 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

In one form or another, a film about baseball great Jackie Robinson has been kicking around Hollywood for years now. The latest attempt, entitled 42, is headed by writer-director Brian Helgeland at Legendary Pictures. Many A-list actors have been sought after for the role of Branch Ricky, the Dodgers Gm who signed Robinson in 1947, helping break the color barrier. Previously, Robert Redford was attached to the role and Jack Nicholson was also offered the part, but now Legendary is courting none other than Harrison Ford. There's no word on Ford's interest level in the project, only that the part is his if he wants it. Jackie Robinson's break into Major League Baseball is arguably the most important sports event of the 20th century, making it a good candidate for a compelling and worthwhile film, assuming it gets off the ground. Ford's more recent films such as Morning Glory and Cowboys and Aliens, »

Movie of the Week

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The Stars: Gary OldmanColin FirthTom Hardy

The Plot: In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley (Oldman) is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6′s echelons.

The Buzz: Great title, great cast, great premise. Sold, sold and sold. Gary Oldman is too cool for school. I can’t wait to see this one. On top of the awesomeness that is Oldman, the film also boasts a bevy of heavy hitters in Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, and Mark Strong. I enjoy all of these actors a great deal, so regarding the cast, this film looks super solid. »

Harrison Ford Among Older Actors Sought For 'Ender's Game'; Asa Butterfield Locked In

29 November 2011 8:49 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So is Harrison Ford a gift or a curse these days? The actor hasn't had a hit film -- that didn't involve carrying a whip once again -- in over a decade. You'd have to go all the way back to 2000's "What Lies Beneath." Since then it's been a string of underperforming and just plain bad films in almost every genre imaginable, from heartwarming drama ("Extraordinary Measures"), genre thrillers ("Firewall"), comedy ("Morning Glory") and blockbuster tentpoles ("Cowboys & Aliens"). But that said, he is Indiana Jones and Han Solo, so that will always carry a certain amount of weight. »
