An exclusive deleted scene from Parental Guidance

22 May 2013 11:25 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Get ready for the grandparents to fight back in the hilarious comedy from Billy Crystal (Analyze This, When Harry Met Sally) and Bette Midler (Beaches, Fantasia) as Parental Guidance arrives here in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD on Monday May 27th, and thanks to Twentieth Century Fox, we have an exclusive deleted scene from the special features, which you can check out after the official synopsis:

Old school grandfather Artie (Billy Crystal), accustomed to calling the shots meets his match when his wife Diane (Bette Midler) eagerly accepts the opportunity to babysit their grandkids from type-a helicopter parents Alice (Marisa Tomei; The Wrestler, Crazy Stupid Love) and Phil (Tom Everett Scott; Law & Order; Southland) who are sent away for work.

Artie and Diane’s old fashioned methods and traditional parenting skills make babysitting a huge challenge in the face of their daughter and her husband’s distinctly 21st century approach. »

New Trailer for DreamWorks’ Turbo with Ryan Reynolds

20 May 2013 8:37 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Having found a big family hit in The Croods this spring, DreamWorks will be back on the big screen in the summer season with another animated blockbuster bound to be a family-favourite in Turbo.

The Croods took north of half a billion dollars at the box office, which was a big win for the studio coming off the back of Rise of the Guardians’ unfortunate loss last year, and I for one can’t wait to see what they have in store for us with Turbo.

The last we saw of the film was two great full-length trailers back in March, right around the time the studio were gearing up for The Croods. And now they’ve debuted another great UK trailer, featuring some great new footage.

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive »

Review: The Nonsensical ‘Java Heat’ Makes Waste of Mickey Rourke

10 May 2013 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I believe Mickey Rourke to be one of the greatest actors of his generation. Thought to be the second coming of Brando in the 1980s, he turned in incendiary performances in such films as The Pope of Greenwich Village, Diner and Barfly. His career – and physical appearance –  suffered a major setback in the ’90s, forcing him to take roles in lesser movies until his salvation appeared to have come in the form of his Oscar-nominated performance in The Wrestler. His appearance, therefore, in Conor Allyn’s messy Java Heat is especially sad because he did not coast on the success of that performance but rather backslid into roles not meriting his talent. Java Heat is a complete waste of Rourke, as he phones it in as French-accented terrorist, inexplicably named Malik, who is up against American FBI Agent/Marine Jake (Kellan Lutz) and Indonesian cop Hashim (Ario Bayu) in the quest to recover the kidnapped Sultana of »

Community Season Finale Recap: Let Us Remember the Good Timelines

10 May 2013 4:14 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Goddammit. I don’t know what to say about “Advanced Introduction To Finality.” I’m not speechless, exactly. It’s more of a case of not having anything nice to say/not saying anything at all. After writing my Point/Counterpoint with Margaret Lyons yesterday and listening to Alison Brie on Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast today, I was really rooting for Community to pull off a fantastic season finale. I was let down.“Advanced Introduction To Finality” rolls into town like an estranged father, grasping at vague memories of what he imagines might interest his now-grown child. “You used to love science-fiction storylines, right? Well I got you a science fiction storyline!” And we, the audience, avert our eyes embarrassed. “Dad, this plot is a mess. Did you write it on coke or something?” It was as if Mickey Rourke’s character from The Wrestler wrote this episode for his long lost daughter. »

The 20 Best Songs Written For Movies

7 May 2013 7:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Everyone seems just as pumped for the Jay-z-produced soundtrack for "The Great Gatsby" as they are for the flick itself. But before we look ahead at what The Hova has in store for what we can only imagine will be the coolest-ever soundtrack to something you were forced to read in high school, let's look back at some of the all-time great movie songs.

Feature by Adam D'Arpino

20. Three 6 Mafia: 'Hard Out Here For a Pimp' ('Hustle & Flow')

Three 6 Mafia took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for this jam that confirmed what we had all already suspected: Pimpin' ain't easy. Terrence Howard and Taryn Manning's performances in "Hustle & Flow" were stellar, but there's little doubt that Three 6 Mafia's Oscar appearance, combined with host Jon Stewart's verbal Oscar tally ("Three 6 Mafia 1, Martin Scorcese 0") is what everyone remembers most about the movie. »

Reader Spotlight: Troy Hopper

3 May 2013 10:48 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

We're getting to know the Film Experience community with reader spotlights once or twice a week. This may take awhile! Today we're talking to Troy from Maryland.

What's your first movie memory?

My first movie memory is seeing Annie in the theater with my mother, aunt, and cousin. I recall being thoroughly drawn in as everyone's favorite redhead clings to Punjab for dear life toward the climax of the film. I also have a vivid recollection of viewing Pinocchio when it was re-released in the early 1980s. I guess that makes me one of your elder readers.

Aw, we have readers of all ages. It's just the younger readers seem way less shy. When did you start reading Tfe?

Oscar race 2001 after a link from Sasha Stone's site. As someone who was not a fan of A Beautiful Mind, I was impressed by your incisive dissection of the movie's glaring flaws. »

Documentaries are the real deal in Hollywood's age of the CGI superhero | Tom Shone

23 April 2013 11:37 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sundance and Tribeca festivals showcase a stunning crop of films, focusing on Afghanistan, killer whales and more

It may count as the least likely of cinematic comebacks since Mickey Rourke bleached his hair and started self-tanning for The Wrestler. A new wave of documentaries are ensuring a return to cinema screens of something long thought lost to our era of spandex-wearing superheroes and CGI fireballs: reality.

Marvelling at "the explosion – and creative flowering – of this most commercially unsexy of genres" at the Tribeca film festival last week, New York magazine's David Edelstein wrote:

In this age of digital video – in which there are cheap cameras, editing software and funding to be had … the cool kids are making docs. The form is not just good for you these days. It's incredibly sexy.

At Sundance this year at least four titles – Pussy Riot, The Summit, Stardom and Blackfish – sold for more than $1m. »

5 Surprising Personal Passion Projects of Legendary Directors

20 April 2013 11:08 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

There’s something inherently lonely and tortured about being a director. Yes, you’re the tyrant of the set and dictator of the vision, but you’re also the man (or woman) behind the curtain, the puppet master who never appears on stage….unless you’re Clint Eastwood or Quentin Tarantino. Or Alfred Hitchcock….or Roman Polanski…Anyway, the point is that you may be the genius behind a film, and celebrated as such, but you’re no superstar. There’s a reason why they are often referred to as voyeurs.

But the upside is that, once you’re an established money-maker, you can afford to be creative in your guises. That is, to put your dream on screen. Most directors have at some stage championed their baby, a cherished passion project which is their love letter to their craft. However, it’s quite galling how this endeavor often falls on deaf ears. »

Flickering Myth's Greatest Comic Book Movies: #13 - Watchmen (2009)

Throughout April, we're counting down to the release of Marvel's Iron Man 3 with our picks for the Greatest Comic Book Movies of All Time; here's #13...

Watchmen, 2009.

Directed by Zack Snyder.

Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino and Patrick Wilson.

For a long while, it looked as if we'd never get to watch the Watchmen. Writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons' sprawling superhero opus was first optioned back in 1986, and passed through the hands of several studios, screenwriters and directors over the next two decades, including Sam Hamm (Batman), Terry Gilliam (Brazil), Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) and David Hayter (X-Men).

Eventually the task of adapting what is arguably the greatest comic book story of all-time fell to Zack Snyder, who was fresh off another hit comic book movie in 300. Snyder chose to adopt the »

At A Glance, The First Trailer For The New ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Looks Pointless, But Look Closer…

12 April 2013 11:03 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

A trailer is out for the new Romeo and Juliet movie. This adaptation is directed by Carlo Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) and stars Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) as Juliet.

My initial reaction while watching the trailer for this honest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet was why bother?

At this stage in the Romeo and Juliet game, if you’re not going to do something wildly creative or unique like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) then why bother?

Then, I saw Paul Giamatti as the Friar and realized that Hailee Steinfeld (who was great in True Grit) plays Juliet. Dammit. I can’t write this one off just yet.

Also, the new Romeo is in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming Noah. Aronofsky (PiThe Wrestler, Black Swan) is an elite director and if he picked up Booth for his Noah project, »
