Maybe the best so far
ericstevenson25 September 2016
I think this is probably my favorite of the "Dragonball Z" movies before the new longer ones came out. It's mostly because I really do enjoy the notion of Freiza's brother appearing. I admit that it doesn't make much sense, because it would cause you to ask why Cooler doesn't want to avenge his father, King Kold. He obviously has more respect towards him than his brother. You could argue that he didn't find out about Freiza being killed by Future Trunks later, but he should have at least known that. This is good probably because of the film's beginning.

I just find it interesting where they set up the mythology of the series. Cooler is great as a villain and I really do like his final form. His voice is very nice and deep and he truly comes off as intimidating here. It's great to see Piccolo do a lot of damage to Cooler's henchman. By giving Cooler minions, it sets him up as a bigger villain. I can see why this guy had another movie based on him. The action is nice and epic and has most of what made the classic show so great. ***

Frieza's brother revealed to be one cool customer.
Aaron137527 July 2010
This film features the first of two appearances of Cooler, the older brother of Frieza. A creature that is going to go after the one who killed his brother though he does not really care all that much for his younger sibling. This one like the previous Z movie "Lord Slug" tried to sync a rocking soundtrack to the movie. However, this one had mixed results at best as they just did not do the job of the previous film. Also annoying on the American voice track is the strange Cooler henchman who for some reason is dubbed as having a French accent. You listen to the Japanese track and he is not voiced any differently than any other character and while this may make him a bit more unique in the dubbers minds to me it makes him very annoying. The story has the gang all camping and of course their camping trip is interrupted by the arrival of Cooler and his men. Some good fights here and there, but also the need for more development a lot of these Z movies need. The final fight is a bit okay, and a bit to over quickly. Though you do get to see a fifth stage of the Frieza clan, though to me it just looked a lot like stage three to me. Once again though Vegeta is sadly absent from the movie, and considering how popular he is it is sad that he was in so few of the movies.

An excellent DBZ movie.
derekbellas26 January 2017
While I don't feel like Cooler's Revenge is quite as good as Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, this movie had just the same effect. Cooler's revenge does a great job of doing a mini-saga with a new villain, full with character development, motivations, and a good ending.

Many people in the DBZ fandom see Cooler as a great villain, and while I don't like him as much as some of the main villains, he is good enough to warrant his own movie.

This movie also confirmed the joke that Frieza's clan is all named after cold things; Frieza, Cooler, King Cold, etc....

Really...?

Great samurai-like battle sequences, interesting villain, more focus on the other heroes
AnthonyRS19832 July 2002
This is the fifth Dragon Ball Z movie to be released during the series' Japanese TV run. When Cooler finds out that his brother Frieza was defeated by a Saiyan, he and his three henchmen go to Earth to seek revenge and destroy the planet as Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin attempt to help an injured Goku get his strength back and defend the Earth. This movie was an improvement over the lasr DBZ movie as the plot centered around a villain closely related to a major villain in the DBZ TV series. This DBZ movie attempts to try some new things, such as putting more of a focus on Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan in the battles and spicing the battle sequences with samurai-film-like elements. As DBZ fans will enjoy the battles and the villain, this DBZ movie's plot suffers from being a bit shallow as it only focuses on the villain's plan to destroy Earth. Also, DBZ fans may be a bit disappointed by the movie's short running time of 47 minutes.

Well Done DBZ movie
gigan-9219 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
One of my all-time favorite DBZ films, telling the tale of Cooler, Frieze's older brother. Apparently he gets news of his sibling's demise at the hands of all people a Saiyan and he sets out to avenge him. I enjoy the humor very much and this must be the final film to feature Gohan's pet dragon, Icarus. Gotta love that cute little thing (lol). Sean Schemmel voices Son Goku while Andrew Chandler is Cooler, fine performances.

The transformations in this movie are incredibly sick, like Cooler reaching his fourth form and this film also features the debut of Super Saiyan Goku. That scene alone is my favorite among the whole film, the music blending perfectly. In fact, there's goes another reason to love this addition: the hard-core rock serving as its score. Featuring songs by Drowning Pool, Breaking Point, and American Pearl, among others. My favorite songs would most likely be "Change" by Deftones and "Revelation" by American Pearl. The action is non-stop and it amazes me how the tide of the battle switches around so much. First Goku's anger seems to give Cooler trouble, who can barely counter his moves. Whether he is in fact taking it seriously or not, good old Goku appears to be in control of the battle. But then Cooler transforms and begins to tear our hero apart with considerable ease. It can be assumed Goku was using the 20X Kaioken, seeing as that's how far he'd advanced up to that point in season three (Episode 92), and yet Cooler flies straight through his Kamehame-Ha beam as if it were a mist. Even Frieza struggled to hold this attack back, leaving his hand burned. But then it appears Goku's Super Saiyan power level has risen since Namek because he defeats Cooler in three blows. In fact, Cooler can't even keep up with his movements at all.

Just something inquisitive fans might ponder. Oh yeah, Piccolo is a bad-ass in the movie!! That's the thing that annoys me about the last two films. Yes, the saiyans are the sh*t but you can't leave out principle characters!!

After defeating the evil planet conquer Freiza, Goku decide to go on vacation. But he meets another evil planet conquer, Cooler, Freiza's older brother!
talarisw8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a big fan of dragonball and dragonball Z and this is the 5th of 12 DBZ movie spin-offs. And it's also one of the best! This and any DBZ movie is strictly for fans. All the dbz movies are very similar, a powerful villain and his henchmen, the villain's super transformation, and their all about 45minutes long. Also the confusing continuity that's in the dbz movies. It's hard to say if this movie is cannon to the TV series, the continuity between the movies and TV series is very confusing, because in some ways the continuity fits, other ways not. Well in this story Freiza was killed on Namek, he was not yet or never was brought back to life by his dad,King Cold. Goku came back to earth soon after wards, before the arrival of Garlic Jr. and the androids. But what makes this movie better then other dbz movies is that it has a great villain, Cooler. The plot is simple and predictable but it was a good idea by dbz creator Akyria Toiyami of making Freiza have a brother and making him a cool(pun intended) character. First I like his name, Cooler aka Coola. I like his look, he looks like both Freiza and his dad but he's kind of handsome in a alien kind of way. His English voice is perfect with his look. I like his personality, he's evil and arrogant like his dad & brother but he seems to have a more no nonsense attitude while Freiza prolonged a lot stuff. Also Cooler seems to be more hands on while Freiza let his henchman do his work. But I think it dosen't make sense that Cooler has only three henchmen while Freiza had an entire army but it's possible he has an army we don't see and they only briefly explain his role in the evil family business, apparently Cooler & Freiza have their own domains in the galaxy, made clear by Cooler saying "Freiza's the one in charge of this quadrant" & "I got seven planets to destroy by the end of the day" but since he's only in this one movie they don't explain him more then they need to. Cooler's special forces, Armored Squardan, are pretty cool. I like the leader Saiza. I like Cooler's relationship with Freiza, the two were rivals and Cooler's so cold hearted he dosen't even care about his brother's death just how it disgraced his family name. The fights in this movie are really good. Cooler's 4th transformation is great, he looks like a football player from hell and Goku's transformation to super saiyan works well into the story. How Goku defeats Cooler is great. My favorite part is the opening, where Cooler makes a pit stop to see Freiza destroy planet Vegeta, great way to introduce him and it comes full circle at the end. The English dubbed version might be better then the original Japanese version with better dialog and I love the heavy metal music that plays through out the story. Cooler is my favorite dbz movie villain and I'm glad they brought him back for a sequel. A dbz classic!

Not Cooler Than Frieza
JayWolfgramm17 March 2023
There is a lot of good going for this movie. Piccolo gets to have some interesting action scenes. Injuring Goku so early in the story makes it so the rest of the crew has to be on stealth mode for a good stretch of the runtime. Having the heroes on the back foot and relying on sneaking around foes with scouters leads to more suspenseful sequences.

Cooler's second form, where he looks like Super Shredder, is also pretty cool. There are some memorable moments and visuals for the final fight and with Piccolo's fights.

But the villain's motivation is lazy, the characterization is dull, and the conclusion of the movie is pretty anti-climactic. Overall, a pretty average Dragon Ball Z movie.

Random fanboy rant: why didn't Gohan use the flying Nimbus instead of Icarus to fly him to Korin's tower? Was it just an unwritten rule that Icarus had to appear in this era of DBZ movies? Or was Gohan not pure of heart enough to ride the Nimbus? Think about it.

The Absoulte Perfect Dragon Ball Z Building Block (First Review, Don't Judge.)
Just-A-Fan-of-Buuhan10 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Being the second Dragon Ball movie I have ever seen before watching the show it self (I watched Super Android 13 before this), I watched this movie on DragonBallOnline and I thought I'd get the good old terrible Japanese dub with Goku sounding like a younger version of Kale from Dragon Ball Super. But, boy-oh-boy was I WRONG!

First off, the story. This movie takes place between after the Trunks Saga and before the Androids Saga, and it offers a unique approach to it's characters from both sides of the force of good and evil.

On the good side we have Goku, who after defeating Frieza on Namek, is taking his time off from training for the Android threat to camp with Gohan, Krillin, Oolong, and Icarus (the latter making his final movie appearance). On the bad side, we have my favorite Dragon Ball Z villain to ever grace the TV screen: Cooler.

While Goku and co. are camping, Cooler finds out from his Armored Squadron that Goku has destroyed Frieza on Planet Namek (They probably found this out during the Trunks Saga). Cooler therefore has two motives: to kill Goku, and to see the power he used to kill Frieza.

Eventually, both sides converge, and havoc ensues: Goku is burned by Cooler's Death Beam and slowly gets burned to death on the inside, Cooler's battle with Goku, the transformation sequences, everything! It makes for one of the best stories in Dragon Ball Z history.

Second off, the voice acting. Andrew Chandler voiced Cooler spot on, and even when Cooler was killed in the sun, Andrew Chandler was amazing. I also like how Sean Schemmel voiced Goku in this movie. It was like you could feel his pain when Goku was slowly dying. (Then again, Senzu Bean ex Machina.)

And finally (you know I had to save the best for last), the music! Featuring The Game by Disturbed during Base Goku vs. Base Cooler (Frieza's Final Form is Cooler's Base Form for some reason. XD), Change by Deftones during SSJ Goku vs. Final Form Cooler (just this song alone is why I ranked this movie so high!), and many others I could mention, this movie is still my favorite Dragon Ball Z movie to this day! Sure, the final battle was short, but it was at least memorable.

However, there's one more thing. Even though I think this movie is the best Dragon Ball Z film of all time (I mean, I rated it 10 stars), it kind of loses some points for me because of Cooler's Armored Squadron. Sure, they were better than the Ginyu Force (although Jeice was a beast), but they were all killed like Piccolo just like how all of the Ginyu Force was killed by Vegeta on Namek. Goku pretty much killed Salza during his power up before his fight with Cooler, so I don't know how the heck Salza survived just to be killed by Piccolo.

Nevertheless, this is my most favorite Dragon Ball Z film, Cooler still remains my #1 favorite Dragon Ball villain (make him canon, Akira Toriyama, you created him!) and I go back to this time and time again. If you want to watch all of the Dragon Ball Z movies in any order, start with this one and watch it in the Funimation dub. You WON'T be disappointed... and THAT'S a promise.

Cooler delivers, The rest of the movie does not
Daviddavecavemave6 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Thus far the most tolerable DBZ film I've seen but that isn't really saying much. Oddly shorter than the previous entries in the series as well, Cooler's Revenge introduces Cooler, the older brother of Frieza, who arrives on Earth in order to seek out the person who killed his brother.

What follows is yet another recycle of the other films - Main villain and his henchmen arrive. Krillin, Gohan, and Piccolo have minor success holding them off (Piccolo more so than the rest). Goku saves the day by defeating the villain. It's predictable but the reason I like it more than the other films is that you establish early on Cooler isn't playing around. He takes charge and criticizes his henchmen for playing games when they could so easily win. I also liked that we see Goku take on the SS form rather than spirit bombing his way to victory.

Sadly, It is also yet another non-canon entry but if you are going to watch any out of the first volume of the DBZ films, This should be the only one you watch.

One of the best Dragon Ball films.
Kdosda_Hegen26 February 2021
This film is truly amazing. It's one of the best Dragon Ball films. The villain is evil and memorable. Action is some of the best and it's full of original ideas and some kind of unexpected twists, especially in comparison to most other Dragon Ball movies which are mostly cash grabs. The only flaw and the same as in Fuson Reborn is that when our hero gets in his final form the fight ends very quickly as if they ran out of budget.

P.S. Where's Vegeta? I might have missed something obvious, but if this takes place after Namek, Vegeta should have been there too. It also could've used Tien for the fight with minions.

I prefer Cooler to Frieza
elonmusk-is_a_moron12 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It might sound a bit blasphemous to purist manga fans, but there are some Dragon Ball Z characters created by Toei whom I personally prefer to their canon counterparts.

Cooler is one of them. A way cooler villain than Frieza and his useless daddy (Amazing how Dragon Ball Super did not try to resurrect him too, considering how the writers from that godawful series seem to love that overrated lizard so much)

Anyway, a pretty good movie. Shame Cooler only appeared in another movie and then just made a couple of cameos in the Janemba movie and Dragon Ball movie.

But then again, maybe it's for the best. The overuse of recurring villains is the last thing Dragon Ball needs. I personally consider the "eternal" rogue galleries one of the worst aspects from western comics (Since they can never be defeated for good in the name of status quo) and the overuse of Frieza is one of the most terrible aspects of the terrible Dragon Ball Super.

So this is the fifth Dragon Ball Z movie So after the terrible movie Slug and you can read in that fence it's finally another interesting Dragon Ball movie So this movie is about a person called Cooler and he's really frieza But when he heard the news that Hisbrother was killed by Goku he decided to exterminate all the Saiyans followed by his three henchmen So what do I think of this film for me it is one of the best Dragon Ball films I loved this film Yet here I always feel that it is not one of the most interesting but for meit is So more or less in this film you understand which where it connects you can connect when they were training before they faced the androids So here there are too many complications because Cooler hit Goku and he can't stand up fifth Gohan he must take a sensiumAnother thing that I liked are the three followers of Cooler who for me look a little like the Ginyu Force because they use exactly the same forces as they always do but I really liked Cooler for me he was truly a beautiful villain because he doesn't want it right awaydestroy anything until it has finished its purpose if he did so he could destroy the earth with a single blow But he told Maleva of my pride because he did not come here to avenge his brother but to complete the work of settling the lineage Saiyan and then it beginsfinal clash There are a lot of them but he Cooler uses something that not even his brother can't do because unlike frieza he can do one more transformation and even Goku is surprised because he says frieza was nothing word born to him is him he didn't know or anythingknock him down but finally he gets to the part we were all waiting for which is this is the first time Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan But it's a little strange because he already knew how to transform why didn't he do it before I don't have an answer that's how Goku made a move and changed Coolernor sun unsubscribing is he says precisely because I didn't make out on that occasion frieza was not the only one to behave lightly This film was very good for me to be at one of the best to conclude vote 9.
