Russell Tovey appears in this episode as a gay young man in love with a gangster. As he is about to set his lover up, Russell walks towards him singing "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye, cheerio here I go on my way" under his breath. Russell played Rudge from The History Boys (2006), which has Russell and the other boys singing this song at several times. Though not in this episode, Stephen Campbell Moore (Evan White) played the character of Irwin in the movie.
Talking to Neary (Dan Fredenburgh), Alex (Keeley Hawes) says she met Marcus (Russell Tovey) while she "was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar" referencing the opening line of The Human League single "Don't You Want Me" released in November 1981. The song is later used in the episode.
In the nightclub, when Ray (Dean Andrews) expresses uncertainty as to how he should come across as gay in a stakeout, Chris (Marshall Lancaster) imitates, "Are you free, Mr Humphries? I'm free," referring to the gay character played by John Inman in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972).
Chris (Marshall Lancaster) mentions "Shilton" referring to goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Later at the nightclub Gene (Philip Glenister) says, "need a good centre back like Dave Watson," referring to footballer Dave Watson.
