Did You Know?

Russell Tovey appears in this episode as a gay young man in love with a gangster. As he is about to set his lover up, Russell walks towards him singing "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye, cheerio here I go on my way" under his breath. Russell played Rudge from The History Boys (2006), which has Russell and the other boys singing this song at several times. See more »

The calendar in Alex's flat suggests that the events take place on and about 12 August 1981. One of the songs played in the club scene is "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League. This track was on the album Dare, which wasn't released until 20 October 1981. Originally considered by the band to be a "filler" track, it wasn't released as a single until 5 December 1981. DI Alex Drake: Well, we've established the cover: Marcus and I used to work the streets.
DCI Gene Hunt: Did you?
DI Alex Drake: No, that's the cover.
DCI Gene Hunt: Shame. Might've fancied a punt.
DI Alex Drake: Hang on, hang on. Now this is worth getting straight; I'm imagining you, imagining paying for sex with me, in my imaginary role as an imaginary street whore?
DCI Gene Hunt: You must have a filthy mind.
DI Alex Drake: Absolute sewer, apparently.

Definite high point
9 August 2015 | by (Swansea, United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Episode 5 is a definite return to top form, once again the use of humour is very well played out. The team investigate Simon Neary, a gangster that Hunt has waited ages to nail. We initially discover Neary's young boyfriend 'Marcus,' great scene when the team discover the suitcase in the hotel room. Once again we see the change in attitudes between the 80's team and Alex to Marcus at the station. Keeley Hawes is totally brilliant in this episode, it's taken a few episodes, but she is finally on top form, some of the scenes with Keeley Hawes and Russell Tovey are really well played out, very sensitively done. I know I always mention the music, but it's great here again, finally we get to hear a bit of Madness. The team's face when they enter the gay bar is very funny. Dan Fredenburgh is very very good as Neary it's worth pointing out. A sad story with a few twists, very very good.
