First look at Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots

17 August 2017 10:36 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With principal photography now underway, Focus Features has released a first look image of Saoirse Ronan in the title role in Working Title Films’ Mary, Queen of Scots.

Mary, Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth 1.  Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history. »

Trailer for “Suburbicon” combines George Clooney, Madd Damon, and the Coen Brothers

1 August 2017 6:32 AM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Catching up on a Trailer debut from a few days ago here (we also got a Teaser for mother! yesterday, but there’s a full Trailer coming next week we’ll tackle). This one today is the major Oscar hopeful Suburbicon, coming to us as the latest directorial outing from George Clooney. Not only is Clooney teamed up with his partner Grant Heslov for this one, he also is working off of a script that the Coen Brothers once penned with an eye towards directing. You’ll be able to see this Trailer below, but first, you know the drill here…some discussion is in order. The film is a pitch black crime comedy of sorts. So far, the description for it is simply that a home invasion rattles a quiet family town. The town is the town of Suburbicon, and Gardner (Matt Damon) is a father and husband drawn »

The Greatest Election Movies

Author: Linda Marric

With American primaries and presidential elections lasting sometimes up to 18 months, it’s no wonder Hollywood cannot seem to get enough of campaign-trail dramas. From quirky comedies, to serious thrillers based on real events, there seems to be an infinite amount of scripts and stories to tell, each offering a different angle on the subject of electoral shenanigans and political intrigue.

The UK may not do elections on the same mammoth scale as its American cousins, but like it or not, right now we do not seem to go more than a year without one major political race or another.  With a surprise general election taking place today what better time for us to take a look at some of the most memorable films about elections ever made?

Inspired by The Mummy, our monster movie fantasy casting!Inspired by The Mummy, our monster movie fantasy casting!Zachary Dent5/15/2017 4:17:00 Pm

The Mummy hits theatres June 9th and is the first monster movie of Universal’s new Monster Universe. This “shared universe” will include rebooted versions of original monster movies including Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Van Helsing, and the Invisible Man.

Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Service) plays the title monster in The Mummy and from what we’ve seen in trailers we can’t imagine anyone else in the role. Universal has already cast Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein in upcoming remakes… but that still leaves plenty of monsters to be cast. So, we’ve taken the liberty of "fantasy casting" the remaining monsters with actors/actresses we think would be perfect for the roles. »

Evan Rachel Wood to Make Directorial Debut

22 March 2017 12:02 PM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Evan Rachel Wood in “Westworld

Westworld’s” Evan Rachel Wood is stepping behind the camera. After more than 20 years of acting in the business, Wood will make her directorial debut. In an interview with Vulture, Jenny Slate (“Obvious Child”) revealed that she’s been cast in the film, which co-stars Wood, Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), and Cynthia Erivo (Broadway’s “The Color Purple”).

Little is known about the project besides the fact that it’s a road trip movie and it’s filming in Vancouver. No word on its title, who penned the script, who is producing, nor any other plot details.

Wood currently stars in HBO’s big budget science fiction Western “Westworld,” which concluded its first season in December 2016. She plays Dolores, the oldest android host working in the park. The show, created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, is a ratings hit. A second season is confirmed, but no word on a premiere date.

It was a woman who directed Wood in her breakout big screen role, 2003’s “Thirteen.” The Catherine Hardwicke film centers on the dysfunctional relationship between two troubled teen girls (Wood and “Twilight’s” Nikki Reed). Wood’s other credits include “Doll & Em,” “The Ides of March,” “True Blood,” “Mildred Pierce,” “Across the Universe,” and “The Wrestler.” Wood’s most recent film credit is Patricia Rozema’s “Into the Forest,” a tale of two sisters (Wood and Ellen Page) struggling to survive the elements, intruders, and each other in the wake of a mass power outage set in the not-so-distant future.

While the specifics are admittedly scarce, it seems like Wood’s directing project will be women-centric based on the casting news. “I don’t think people have a problem [with female-led stories.] I think it’s assumed because it’s a male-driven world and lot of entertainment decisions are made mainly by men,” Wood has said in the past. “We’re getting better about it but the misconception that if it’s female-driven, you’re gonna alienate people — that does men a disservice because you’re not letting them into that world and to really see women as people,” she observed. “We just have to give people a chance and give these films a chance and let the audience decide. Stop assuming that men are things incapable of empathy. It’s almost insulting to men!”

Evan Rachel Wood to Make Directorial Debut was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »

Ryan Gosling: From Mouseketeer and indie darling to Hollywood movie star

4 January 2017 5:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Sara Hemrajani on the rise of Ryan Gosling

La La Land, the award-tipped ode to musicals from Hollywood’s Golden Age, sees Ryan Gosling dance, sing, wax lyrical about jazz and woo Emma Stone’s aspiring actress in modern day Los Angeles. It’s a terrific performance and the 36-year-old seems to be a lock for one of the best actor Oscar nods. To top that off, he will be hitting the screens across the year in Terrence Malick’s Weightless and the eagerly anticipated Blade Runner sequel.

Showbusiness isn’t new to Gosling – he was a Mousekeeter (alongside pre-teen Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) in The Mickey Mouse Club, and he played the title role in the Young Hercules series in the late 1990s. Gosling followed television with some smartly chosen indie features and, not too long after, he was primed for the big leagues as a major movie star. »
