Massively popular book franchise gets made into a series of movies. We’ve been here before haven’t we, Harry Potter? You, good sir, set the benchmark extraordinarily high; your films grossed $7.7 billion worldwide over 10 years and were almost universally loved. Well, six good films out of eight isn’t bad. Now it is up to The Hunger Games to step up and fill the big box office gap left by the graduation of J.K Rowling’s boy wizard. With the trilogy’s opener released so early this year in March, »

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Hunger Games’ Given Stellar Two-Disc Edition

26 August 2012 2:18 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Can a Blu-ray be both great and a likely placeholder for a future Special Edition? “The Hunger Games” makes that case. The lack of a commentary track or deleted scenes (and Lionsgate’s double-dipping track record) lead one to believe that a Special Edition will likely hit stores in conjunction with “Catching Fire” but this is still a great release with hours of special features and a stellar HD video and audio transfer. And the movie has held up well since its wave of publicity has subsided in favor of Summer blockbusters. It’s a great flick, one of the best Hollywood films of 2012 to date.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

My friend Erik (follow @EriktheMovieman) put it perfectly when he said “Gary Ross actually made a movie.” What he meant was he didn’t make a product, a piece of merchandising designed to appeal only to the consumers already programmed to buy it. »

The Hunger Games Blu-Ray Review

18 August 2012 4:57 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Harry Potter is done and Twilight is coming to an end. There’s room for a new wave of teenage dramas and Suzanne CollinsThe Hunger Games was ripe for the picking. Director Gary Ross adapts the messy and unbalanced dystopian story to the best of his ability, but even his talents aren’t strong enough to off-set such a half thought out script that trades character progression for sappy romance that aims at the hearts of shallow romantics.

In a dystopian future the nation of Panem is divided between 12 districts. Each year there is a game held that pits 2 youngsters from each district against each other in a brutal fight to the death. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) offers herself as tribute to protect her sister and insecure Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) is chosen as the male counterpart.

The two must train together in hopes of getting the upper-hand against the kids from the other districts. »

The Hunger Games Blu-ray Review

16 August 2012 10:29 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The Hunger Games accomplished what Twilight could not. It transcended the bounds of "young adult" entertainment and became a cultural phenomenon across a wide swath of demographics. It was a joy to see theatrically, and even better the second time on Blu-ray.

Much of The Hunger Games success can be attributed to author Suzanne Collins, writer/director Gary Ross, and star Jennifer Lawrence. Ross was able to adapt Collins' story for the big screen in a gritty, human and sometimes "indie feel" way. He has a clear pulse on the heroine Katniss Everdeen, which in turn is reflected by the strong performance from Lawrence and her supporting cast including Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz.

There is a moment in The Hunger Games when Katniss is seconds away from entering the tube that will whisk her away to the arena and certain death. »
