A Look at the Real Taxi Drivers
Taxi Driver Stories (2007)
*** (out of 4)
Of all the featurettes made for the TAXI DRIVER Special Edition DVD (and now on Blu-ray), this here is without question the strangest but it's also rather fascinating. Several taxi drivers who worked in NYC during the 1970s discuss their experiences and compare them to the various scenes in the movie. We here various stories including one where a transvesdyke leaves a "prize" in the backseat and another about a crazy man and an axe. One driver talks about learning his lesson when he tried to stop a man from beating a woman only to have the woman go off on him for not minding his own business. These type of stories are told but so are others like how one would become a taxi driver back in the day and there's also mention of a "hack" test which is pretty funny. There's some nice talk about the movie and one driver explains what it was like seeing one of his own on the big screen playing the hero. There's not too much that actually relates to the film as this really does shine the spotlight on taxi driving in a big city back in the day. I'm sure some might find it boring or silly but it's an interesting aspect of the film that not too many have discussed.
