A solid episode, with a cute mouse.

A talented artist is killed in her studio, along with her pet mouse.

I am really enjoying this series so far, it's another fine episode, it's sad that Ardal is soon to vacate the island. His conflict with his wife and new found love interest have added a different side to the character, he's been great for the show.

As with the previous episode, I thought the tone was generally of a more serious nature. The story was very good, and the solution was excellent. Some of the bulk of the story was a little padded, it was a little less dramatic than last week's exciting opener, but it was still very good.

Alexander Vlahos was very good, we needed a bit more screen time for Barbara Flynn.

A good watch. 7/10

Solid

I'm still not sure about the romance but the opportunity to explore Mooney's character more in his final season and the emotions that draws out is welcome. It's also quite a fun mystery this week which isn't instantly solveable. The poisoning of an artist where none of the suspects were able to poison her - a familar style of murder but it always works quite well for DiP

Solid enough!

Warning: Spoilers
Because the ninth season of "Death in Paradise" started on a very note with "La Murder le Diable'", I was really looking forward to see the next episode. "A Murder in Portrait" is not as good as the previous entry, but still manages to be a solid episode on its own.

Let's start with the good aspects, right?

. The episode looks and sounds great as usual. The acting's not bad either. Ardal O'Hanlon continues to be a joy as Mooney and Alexander Vlahos is pretty good too.

. The murder mystery is compelling with clever twists and turns. The subplot regarding the relationship between Anna and Jack is cute indeed.

But..

. The subplot about mice was sadly not very entertaining and overstayed its welcome, because the main characters using the same joke to entertain the audience.

. Also, because the writer gave a very vital clue just before the reveal of the murderer, that's why the identity of the culprit (Sandrine) was ruined for me and did not come as a shock at all.

Overall, a good one.

7/10 HK

Episode 9.2

Warning: Spoilers
A noted artist, Donna Harman is killed by some poison inside a can of an unopened energy drink.

A taxing case for Jack Mooney and Officer Ruby Patterson finds the artist's pet mouse has been killed until it suddenly revives itself.

Jack Mooney looks for a motive, Harman had written an expose of the British art scene in the 1990s. Harman also wanted out from her art dealer who will financially benefit as the prices of her painting will increase. She also had a volatile argument with her boyfriend.

There seems to be a more serious tone to the ninth series, it looks like they have dialled down the comedy a little. The method of murder after the supposed 'dead body' is found is a popular one in Death in Paradise, I think it goes back to the very first episode.

Barbara Flynn guest stars

Warning: Spoilers
Barbara Flynn is an acclaimed actress (I first saw her in the TV series A Very Peculiar Practice) and she makes a welcome guest appearance here, where the artist's torment takes its toll tragically.

Nina Wadia, who plays Jack's girlfriend, Anna Masani, has a resemblance to actress Rebecca Front.

I like Death in Paradise, and even at season 9 it still maintains its consistency. I also like seeing the two extras who play the guys who carry away the corpses on stretchers. They are a constant to this fine series. Maybe an episode should be focused on them.

A Murder in Portrait

This is a solid if unspectacular episode of the long-running show, perhaps one that borrows elements from other instalments rather than adding anything new.

I agree with a previous reviewer, there did seem to be a fair bit of padding with JP and the mouse to fill the time.

The romantic storyline involving Jack and Anna was nicely played though.

Jack and Anna Romantically? Ugh
The episode would have been great except for the burgeoning relationship between Jack and Anna. I'm really uncomfortable watching the two of them together because I can't even remotely buy into the possibility of these two together romantically. I think an actress closer in looks or shape to Jack's dead wife would have been a far better match....or someone with more depth or intelligence or eccentricities.... As it is, Nina Wadia and Ardal O'Hanlon are completely mismatched.
