The Line refers to the drug pathway between Mexico and the United States. In this surprisingly under-rated dramatic movie, there is a carefully crafted visceral location setting in Tijuana along with a character portrayal that goes beyond the normal crime thriller. This is character and plot-driven movie that only uses action violence as a secondary element. As such, movie likely turned many audience members off, who anticipated the usual amount of over the top explosions, mayhem, and fabulous action.
There is a rich crispness of cinematography that resembles director Michael Mann's work as in Manhunter (1986) as well as the smooth, ethnic music that adds power to the movie much in the way Mark Isham used music in The Cooler (2003). The way the movie unfolds along with his gritty, humanistic dirt and emotions echoes elements of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992) and Robert De Niro's The Good Shepard (2006). Just a dark and comical in its depiction of an assassin in The Matador (2005), The Line reveals a dark and substantive humanistic tour of crime drama. The Line could have laid the groundwork of the award winning work of Ben Affleck's Argo (2012).
