- A woman, Jill Reynolds, arrives at her home with her friend, Stephanie. Jill calls out to her husband, a Marine captain, to turn the stereo down. When Stephanie goes to say hello, she sees that Jill's husband is dead. He's been shot with a spear gun.
Cue opening credits.
NCIS learns that Army CID has jurisdiction on this case, which means that Gibbs will be answering to his current girlfriend, Lt. Col. Hollis Mann. Gibbs also learns that Jill's friend, Stephanie, is one of his ex-wives.
Captain Reynolds was working with the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) on some very classified material so they send someone, Fred Rinnert, to monitor Abby as she works on Captain Reynolds laptop.
As the investigation proceeds, the team uncovers the fact that Jill Reynolds was having an affair with Army Major Eric Sweigart. Maj Sweigart also happens to be Stephanie's boyfriend. When Tony and Ziva go the crime scene to look for more forensic evidence, they find her vigorously scrubbing her husband's blood stains from the carpet. They find a tiny partial print in the kitchen that hadn't been scrubbed away.
Col Mann confronts Jill about her affair with Sweigart and says that this gives and the insurance money gives her motive for killing her husband. But Jill was at a conference at the time of her husband's death. Maj Sweigart also has an alibi.
McGee says that the partial print could belong to about 80,000 different people. He'll try to narrow the list down.
While talking with Ducky about why Gibbs shuts down emotionally, Col Mann discovers the truth about Gibbs' marriages and learns about his first wife and his daughter.
In a funny scene, Stephanie comes to NCIS to talk to Director Shepherd, wondering if Gibbs is targeting Sweigart because she is dating him. She tells Jenny that she always wondered if there had been anything romantic between she and Gibbs before he married Stephanie. Jenny lies and assures Stephanie that she and Gibbs have always been professional. When Stephanie is leaving, Jenny asks Col Mann if Gibbs can remain objective on this case. Gibbs is clearly uncomfortable with his ex-wife, ex-girlfriend and current girlfriend all talking together. Tony is tickled pink.
Abby discovers a file of a song on Captain Reynolds' computer. The song lists all of the elements on the periodic table. McGee becomes jealous as Abby and Fred, the DIC guy, develop a rapport. On Fred's suggestion, Abby checks the laptop's RAM more carefully and finds a code that filters words out of the song. She thinks that the atomic numbers of the filtered elements are a code. Abby's phone rings and Fred answers it. He says that Gibbs wants to see her. She seals the laptop in an evidence bag and leaves.
They give the numbers to McGee to crack the code. The team finds out that Fred lied to Abby about Gibbs calling for her and is now alone in the lab with all the evidence. McGee's computer says that one of the 80,000 possible matches for the fingerprint is Fred. Gibbs, Col Mann and Abby rush back to her lab.
But it's too late. Fred has wiped out the evidence and they can't even prove that he did the wiping. He is about to walk out scot free, when McGee's computer saves the day. The numbers from the elements in the song are to a bank account under the names of Captain Reynolds and Fred. They conspired to sell secrets and Fred killed Reynolds to keep all the money.
Gibbs and Col Mann are coming down to his basement for the rest of their date and find Stephanie there. She wants to talk to Gibbs. She is moving back home to be closer to her family. She says that she is grateful to Gibbs for not throwing in her face the fact that her boyfriend was cheating on her. In the basement, Col Mann finds a cassette tape and, thinking that it's music, plays it. It's Gibbs daughter, Kelly, practicing for her piano recital. At the end, she promises that by the time she sees him again, she'll be real good. The tape ends with Kelly and Shannon saying how much they love and miss Gibbs.
Gibbs comes back and hears Col Mann listening to the tape. They both look sad and the episode ends.
This was Col Mann's last appearance on NCIS. There is a brief (very!) mention of Col Mann later in the season. Jenny reads in the Stars and Stripes that she is retiring from the Army and relocating to Hawaii.
