Sandra Bullock has been voted the Top Money-Making Star of 2009 in Quigley Publishing Company’s 78th Annual Poll of Exhibitors and is the first female to win since Julia Roberts in 1999. Bullock is the eighth woman chosen #1 in the Poll’s 78 year history. She appeared in three films in 2009, The Blind Side, The Proposal and All About Steve.
Denzel Washington rounded out the Top Ten with The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.
The Quigley Poll, conducted each year since 1932, is an annual survey of motion picture theatre owners and film buyers, whichasks them to vote for the ten stars that they believe generated the most box-office revenue for their theatres during the year. It has been long regarded as one of the most reliable indicators of a Star’s real box-office draw because the selections are done by people whose livelihood depends on choosing the films that will bring audiences to their theatres. »

I’m torn on this one, people. While I’m a huge fan of Pierre Morel’s cinematic output, I’m not exactly what you’d call the biggest John Travolta supporter on the planet. In my humble opinion, the guy’s strictly hit-or-miss, with very little gray area in-between. That being said, the trailer for Morel’s upcoming actioner “From Paris with Love” looks moderately intriguing, though I’m still a little apprehensive about the whole thing. Watching Travolta play a tough guy in 2009’s “The Taking of Pelham 123″ was different, to say the very least, but I don’t feel he really has what it takes to make these roles 100% believable. Maybe this particular action-packed outing will prove me wrong. Maybe Travolta will knock it right out of the proverbial park. Then again, we might have another “Broken Arrow” on our hands. Yikes. Here’s a nifty »

And the lists keep acoming…
This time, it’s a list of the “black films” with the highest theatrical box office grosses.
For the sake of this post, I’m defining “black films” as those in which a person of African descent stars.
They don’t have to be the only lead, but their story must be pivotal to the overall film.
Here they are, along with their grosses:
1. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $90,508,336
2. Law Abiding Citizen – $72,677,191
3. Michael Jackson’s This Is It – $72,091,016
4. Obsessed – $68,261,644
5. The Princess and the Frog – $66,750,505
6. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 – $65,452,312
7. Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself – $51,733,921
8. Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire – $42,004,270
9. Notorious – $36,843,682
10. The Soloist – $31,720,158
Some quick observations:
- Tyler Perry apparently rules mainstream black cinema, with 3 of the films having his stamp on them.
- And wherever Tyler Perry’s name shows up, you can »

The latest Spider-Man movie is "in turmoil", a new report claims. Production on Sam Raimi's blockbuster has been put on hiatus over Christmas while filmmakers attempt to complete a shooting script, according to Indiewire's Thompson on Hollywood. Regular franchise producer Laura Ziskin has allegedly taken a backseat for the latest film, titled Spider-M4n, leaving Todd Black (The Taking Of Pelham 123) to deal with demands from Sony, Marvel and (more) »

1. There’s girl-on-girl snogging between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as bisexual rock stars in The Runaways. That’s why it’s R-rated. 2. Spider-Man 4 is in turmoil. Laura Ziskin is not actively producing the fourth Spider-Man installment (tentatively titled Spider-M4n), and Todd Black (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Knowing) has his hands full as the many cooks at Sony and Marvel try to finalize the shooting script. This time, director Sam Raimi wants to get his way on story and villains; last time around he thought he gave in too much to studio demands on action figures and the like, to the film’s detriment. … »

The Courier Mail has a gallery of photos from the new Robin Hood film, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Danny Huston and Matthew Macfadyen. The series of images focus mainly on showing Crowe on horses, either sitting idly with what appear to be his merry men, charging into battle, and a couple of Ridley Scott and his crew working.
The movie is supposedly written as a more historically accurate telling of the Robin who becomes the famous hood. Apparently we’ll be treated to visuals of battles in France, battles in England, and the beauty of Cate Blanchett all dirtied up to look authentic. But, not too dirtied up.
The casting and obviously the pedigree of the filmmakers behind this movie have me interested. The screenplay is by Brian Helgeland, who has written a number of great movies (Payback, Man on Fire), along »

I may never have to interview a bouncing narcissist again
I met Tom Cruise once. Well, I say I met him, but really I was just standing in the press line at the premiere of one of his movies, where "Tom's People" put journalists in a little cage in Leicester Square, and walk Tom past, while fans throw their babies at him. Feeding time. Munch. Munch. Munch. Anyway, I think the man from the Socialist Worker, who was in front of me, must have died because suddenly I was nose to nose with Tom Cruise, star of Taps. I am taller than he is.
A one-to-one press-line chat with Tom Cruise goes like this. Me: "How are you?" I know it is a sub- Hello! question. But I couldn't care less how Tom Cruise is, and he knows it. If he were to drop dead right in front of me, »

Short Version: The good news is: If you like to walk in, sit down and enjoy an action film, then Armored is for you. The bad news is: If you’ve seen the trailer, then you can walk in 45 minutes late and not miss a thing.
Screen Rant’s Paul Young reviews Armored
Every once in a while a movie comes out of nowhere that totally catches me by surprise. Black Dog, Hard Rain and Deep Rising are still three of my favorite mid-budget action flicks that got very little advertising or respect but managed to be very enjoyable in the theaters. All three also made into my DVD library – and now Armored will join them on my shelf.
There are some minor spoilers in the following review.
Nimrod Antal, the guy directing Predators, has done a very good job of making Armored fun and interesting without blowing it way over-the-top. »

"The Mentalist" is getting a new supervisor.
Aunjanue Ellis is joining the cast of the CBS drama in what's described as a "heavily recurring" part. She'll play the new head of the California Bureau of Investigation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ellis, who's slated to make her debut on the show in the spring, is stepping in for Gregory Itzin, who's headed back to "24" to reprise his role as former President Charles Logan. (His "Mentalist" character, Virgil Minelli, announced his resignation in the Nov. 20 episode.)
Ellis' credits include "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," NBC's "E-Ring" and a few episodes of "True Blood."
- "Cougar Town" is welcoming a new younger man to its fold -- but he won't be hooking up with Courteney Cox's Jules.
Ryan Devlin ("Veronica Mars," "Big Shots") will have a recurring part on the ABC comedy later this season, the Hr says. He'll »

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. For those of you Stateside, hope that you're feeling rested (and hopefully recovering from a few days of gluttony) after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Major changes afoot at USA, according to The Futon Critic's Brian Ford Sullivan. Rather than follow the plans the cabler had outlined for January, USA has chosen to revise its entire schedule, moving its series White Collar, Burn Notice, and Psych onto separate evenings, come January. White Collar will return to the lineup on January 19th, where it will move into its new timeslot of Tuesday evenings at 10 pm Et/Pt. Meanwhile, Psych will take over the Wednesday night slot beginning January 27th and Burn Notice will remain on Thursdays, returning with new episodes on January 21st. The move gives the cabler original series on three weeknights. Perhaps a ploy to lure viewers from broadcast sibling NBC to some scripted fare at 10 pm? »

Meet the new boss on "The Mentalist."
Aunjanue Ellis has joined the cast of the sophomore CBS drama in a heavily recurring role.
She will play the beautiful but tough new head of the California Bureau of Investigation who is installed following the resignation of the unit's former chief, Virgil Minelli, played by Gregory Itzin. (Itzin recently signed on to return to "24," reprising his role as former President Charles Logan.)
She is brought in to restore discipline and morale to the division after the murder of three agents, including Agent Sam Bosco (Terry Kinney), and will be Agent Teresa Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) new supervisor.
The Warner Bros. TV-produced series revolves around Lisbon's team and the help they get from independent consultant Patrick Jane (Simon Baker).
Ellis' debut on "Mentalist" is tentatively slated for April.
