Storyline

This Traveltalks visit to New Zealand starts in Auckland, a bustling, modern city. We see scenes of the downtown area with lots of automobile traffic and streetcars. Next is Christchurch, home of Canterbury University, where rowing teams participate in a regatta. Nearby is Lake Wakatipu, which inspires artists to put their impressions on canvas. We then visit Rotorua, a city famous for its geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and other geothermal activity. At Ferry Springs there is lots of trout for fishing. Later, a group of natives performs a canoe dance. Background music for this film is provided by The Rangitoto Maori Choir, who sing tunes in praise of their country. Near the end of the film, they perform on camera. Written by David Glagovsky <dglagovsky@prodigy.net>

Narrator: Remotely situated thousands of miles from the crowded centers of civilization lies Auckland, ocean gateway to northern New Zealand, and one of the most progressive cities of its size in the British Empire. In spite of its remoteness, a way down under the Equator, Auckland manages to keep abreast of the times and readily utilizes all the worthwhile modern developments of the outside world.

Picturesque New Zealand (1952)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

TravelTalks entry takes us to Auckland where we see how the city has developed over the past generations. We see a museum where many belongings to the original settlers are held as well as the Christ Church, which is near Canterbury University. Also on hand is Lake Wakatipu, which was been the main inspiration of many artists and we also see various farms with sheep and how New Zealand has become one of the best fishing grounds in the world. This is yet another good entry in the series as we get some great stories and some wonderful visuals. The only thing I would question is the image of Lake Wakatipu because what we see here looks like a painting. We see an artist sitting in front of the lake drawing it but to my eyes it appears that the artist is sitting in front of a painted lake. Once again we get the great narration by James A. FitzPatrick and some glorious Technicolor shots.
