The first thing that comes to mind after watching Insanitarium, is that it really hasn't been what I expected. Not in a good way nor a bad way, just as a plain fact. I expected another Horror film which takes place in a clinic/hospital, and got something completely different which I have actually enjoyed quite a bit.
Insanitarium could be roughly divided into two parts. In the first part - the exposition was too short and lacked information in my opinion, and the build up was hardly believable and made little sense. Then again, it did come to make sense afterwards once the events unfolded. The first part basically showed us what life's like in a psychiatric hospital for really severe cases, with a conspiracy theory about a revolutionary experimental drug administered to the patients against regulations and common sense. In the 2nd part - all hell broke loose, as the vicious side effects of the drug were made known and the patients broke free.
This film was rightfully labeled Horror/Thriller, with the second part having some Action aspects. All in all, like DimensionKeeper said in the message board - "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest meets 28 Days Later". The way I see it - Insanitarium is a perfect Zombie Apocalypse prologue. It's not terrifying but is scary and has its moments. A little too much gore for my own personal liking, but not too much and not out of context. It felt like it could use some more work on the screenplay, maybe a nice twist, but all in all I enjoyed watching it.
