Since the nominees for TV's top award are a lot like TV reruns, there's a good chance we'll see most of last year's nominees for outstanding lead actor in a drama series return when bids are unveiled on July 16. Judging panels will not be used this year to whittle down final nominees after evaluating sample episodes submitted by the top 10 voter-getters determined by a popular vote of members of the TV academy's acting branch. This year, six nominees (instead of the traditional five) will be decided by an outright popular vote, so that makes predicting the outcome much easier. Sure bets probably include last year's nominees Gabriel Byrne ("In Treatment"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"), Hugh Laurie ("House M.D.) and 2008 winner Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"). That leaves room for just one more. Serial past winner James Spader ("Boston Legal"), who made last year's rundown? Previous champ Kiefer Sutherland

A&E's new police drama "The Beast" has been canceled. The Patrick Swayze-headliner series will not be returning for a second season.
The news comes days after it was reported that the cabler has been mulling over the series' cancellation.
A&E president Bob DeBitetto told BBC that the series, which premiered on January 15 this year, was a "labor of love," praising Swayze's dedication to the show.
Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, refused to take painkillers while he filmed the 13-part series.

New York (AP) - "The Beast," a police drama that starred the ailing Patrick Swayze, will not return for a second season, A&E announced Monday. The series, which premiered in January, starred Swayze as Charles Barker, a rogue undercover FBI agent teamed up with rookie Ellis Dove (Travis Fimmel). The series was filmed on location in Chicago. Reviews for the series were mixed and its audience averaged 1.3 million viewers through the 13 episodes, which concluded their run in April. But Swayze was unstinting in a rough-and-tumble performance that he maintained while battling pancreatic cancer. His illness had no discernible...

The drama that could mark Patrick Swayze's last acting job has been axed.
The Beast wasn't a big ratings hit when it first appeared on TV screens in the U.S. earlier this year and executives at the A&E network have now confirmed there will be no more episodes.
Swayze, 56, shot the first, and now only, season of the show while battling pancreatic cancer and won acclaim for his portrayal of a tough FBI agent.

After running about 13 episodes, A&E’s freshmen series The Beast is being put down. The Patrick Swayze starring drama series did not have enough of a solid audience to wrangle in the right ratings, only able to bring in around 1.3 million.
Looks like people were more interested in Swayze's illness than the show.
“The Beast,” starring Patrick Swayze and Travis Fimmel, centers on an unorthodox but effective FBI veteran, Charles Barker (Swayze), who takes on a rookie partner, Ellis Dove (Fimmel), to train in his hard-edged and psychologically clever style of agenting. The mischievous veteran hazes his new partner as they work undercover, brilliantly manipulating situations, constantly testing his new partner and pushing him to delve deeper into his “roles.” As Dove realizes he can no longer maintain normal relationships and still do his job, the rookie is confronted with yet another challenge: An FBI team trying to enlist

Update: A&E protested too much. The network confirmed Monday that it did, indeed, cancel The Beast after one season. A&E president Bob DeBitetto called the cop drama a "labor of love" for Swayze and praised the star's work ethic while battling cancer as they shot the first season. __________________ The Beast is no longer A&E's burden. Or Patrick Swayze's. While the cable net has yet to make an official announcement about the crime drama's future, network sources told Variety the show's first season would also serve as its last. It seems that A&E viewers won't be getting another dose of Patrick Swayze. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the A&E network has just canceled The Beast.
The series premiered in January on the cable network and starred Patrick Swayze as a Chicago cop. Although the series marked somewhat of a comeback for Swayze, as he continued to fight the pancreatic cancer he was diagnosed with last year, the ratings weren't high enough for a pick-up.
The series averaged 1.3 million viewers throughout its 13-episode run.

Likely due to mediocre ratings and its star's health, A&E has cancelled The Beast after one season.
Set in Chicago, The Beast revolves around an unorthodox veteran of the FBI, Charles Barker (Patrick Swayze). He takes on a rookie partner, Ellis Dove (Travis Fimmel) and trains him a hard-edged and controversial approach towards undercover work. Others in the cast include Lindsay Pulsipher, Kevin J. O'Connor, Larry Gilliard Jr., Shannon Edwards, Johnny Kastl, Suzy Brack, Danielle Mulligan, Randy Bernales, Emily Margaret Heitzer, Mike Bach, Dale Caba, and Thomas Kosik.
Overall, the series was well-received by critics, with Swayze receiving the lion's share of the praise. The show's ratings unfortunately didn't reflect the positive press. Approximately 2.45 million tuned in to watch the premiere but then only 1.55 million returned for episode two. The third installment dropped to 1.35 million. The first season's 13 episodes averaged about 1.3 million.
Those numbers aren't stellar but they are

Patrick Swayze's TV show has reportedly been cancelled. The 56-year-old actor was shooting the first 13-episode series of the program when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. He completed filming, despite spending several weeks in hospital fighting pneumonia. The show did not rate well, but sources expected network A&E to commission a second series. Mild ratings have prompted A&E to cancel "The Beast" after only 13 episodes airing. Although the network has released a statement that no decision has been made yet, a source close to the show told People, "There's no way it was going to happen without Patrick."
"The Beast" is a cop drama starring Patrick Swayze as FBI veteran training a rookie cop. The latest episode aired on April 23 but the networks has not made announcement whether there will be a second season.
For one thing, Swayze is battling pancreatic cancer and was unable to promote the show effectively due to treatments such as chemotherapies. He shot the first season entirely in Chicago last summer but early this year, when the series was about to air, he was admitted to hospital due to pneumonia.
Variety, which first came up with the cancellation story, said that there is a chance that Swayze

Patrick Swayze's acting career has been dealt a heavy blow - his TV show The Beast is reportedly facing the axe after just one season.
The star pressed ahead with filming the first series of the cop show last year despite battling pancreatic cancer, and he was said to be in good spirits while training for the second outing of the programme in March.
But online reports suggest Swayze will not be returning to the small screen as rogue FBI officer Charles Barker - because the show is on the verge of being dropped by A&E network executives.
However, a spokesperson for A&E tells industry paper Daily Variety an official decision has yet to be made.
Swayze was diagnosed with the fatal disease in early 2008 and was recently forced to deny rumours he was on his deathbed.

The producers of Patrick Swayze's FBI drama "The Beast" are denying that the series has been canceled. A rep for the A&E network tells Et that no decision has been made about the show's fate. Swayze -- who continued shooting the series despite his diagnosis and treatment for pancreatic cancer last year -- stars in "The Beast" as an unorthodox FBI vet training a new partner while being pursued by a secret Internal Affairs team. The executive producer of "The Beast," John Romano, told Et earlier this year that the production team was confident about Swayze's return and the star had been ambitious about moving on with the show. "We're taking our cues from him," Romano said. "He's giving us every sign that we're rolling forward; here comes season two. That's the energy he's giving out and that's the way we're doing the show." Photos: Getty Images
