ADVENTURES OF THE FALCON – Hot Cargo – 1954
This is the 32nd episode of the 39 episode run of the 1954 to 1956 series, ADVENTURES OF THE FALCON. Film noir icon Charles McGraw headlines as Mike Waring, an agent of the U.S. Government. The series follows McGraw as he travels the world putting the kibosh on various criminals and foreign agents.
In this one, McGraw is sent to Chicago to help out the ATF. One of their agents was killed. He was working a case on an outfit that was selling homemade whiskey. The agent was done in, as his boss, Damian O'Flynn says, "By a massive bit of hit and run." It seems the killers drove over the agent a half dozen times.
McGraw goes undercover in a rundown area of Chicago looking for leads. He hits all the watering holes and dives where low-life scum might be. He soon has a bite as he shows bartender some of his wares. ATF had supplied McGraw with a selection of bonding labels for booze bottles.
McGraw is soon contacted by a brother sister team of cons. The pair, Walter Coy and Jean Willies claim they work for a mob that has 100 or so stills up. They could use the labels to help fool people their product is the real deal. A meeting is arranged with several of these mob types. The meeting takes place at a printing shop. The mob types, Lane Bradford and Lou Krugman like the labels and want to swing a deal for more. McGraw says he will only deal with the top man. Another meeting is arranged.
The mob however has tumbled to the fact that McGraw is a Fed. He is grabbed up and taken to a warehouse for a little bit of less than friendly social intercourse. He also discovers that the big boss happens be Walter Coy. Sister Jean Willies does not mind doing a bit of crime, but is not happy with killing McGraw. Willies, pulls an automatic from her purse, and releases McGraw.
McGraw grabs the phone and calls ATF who quickly send several carloads of Police to raid the warehouse. The crooks leap in their vehicles and make a run for it. Boss Coy makes a dash for safety on foot but does not get far. One of his own men runs him over in a bid to escape the boys in blue. Case closed.
This is a nice looking episode, with plenty of shadows and such provided by long time cinematographer, Kenneth Peach. Peach started out in 1933 and ended up his career doing episodes of TAXI in 1983. His film work include the early sci-fi classic, IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE. This was of course remade as Ridley Scott's ALIEN.
