Rumspringa
17 December 2009 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

Not knowing much about the Amish, as a religion, this episode was somewhat instructive in that it showed a side one never thought possible from this strict sect. Rumspringa is a sort of period when some Amish teenagers reach sixteen and are given permission to go out into the world for a period of time in which they will make a decision, either to be baptized and return to their community, or just abandon that way of living.

In the case of Anna Gunden, an eager young woman who disappeared in Philadelphia's Kensington area, she went missing from the face of the earth. Her good friend Rachel, who had gone with Anna, initially, after not having had a word from her in over a year, she goes to the Cold Case unit to get help finding the missing friend. The Cold Case team's reaction is they don't deal with missing persons, but as Lilly becomes interested, an investigation is launched.

Both Rachel and Anna, had an Amish friend, Jakob, who had decided to adopt the "English" way of living, not returning to their small town. He is seen taking the girls to Philadelphia to introduce them to his own crowd. Anna meets Vince, a strange boy, at the party. She likes him instantly, perhaps because he is so different from her. Rachel, on the other hand, is repulsed by the city, Jakob and his friends. Rachel, who can't adapt to the new surroundings suffered a great tragedy, of which no one knows anything, and decides to go back. A surprising ending is revealed as the unit solves this case.

Directed by Holly Dale, this chapter was written by Jennifer Johnson. McKenzie Mauzy and Ashlee Gillespie appear as Anna and Rachel. Christopher Shand has some tense moments, as Jakob. Also notable is Sean Wing, who plays Vince.
