Pattinson bites into 'Twilight'

12 December 2007 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Robert Pattinson has joined the cast of Twilight, Summit Entertainment's teen-vampire thriller.

Pattinson will play the role of Edward, a teenager who leads a double life as a vampire and becomes romantically involved with his nonvampire high school classmate Bella (Kristen Stewart). Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) is directing the film, which is set to go into production in early 2008, from a script by Melissa Rosenberg (Step Up).

The movie is based on Stephanie Meyer's best-selling young-adult novel. Meyer penned two sequels, and Summit is hoping to turn the property into a film franchise.

Summit head of production Erik Feig said that the project fit squarely with the company's larger slate. "Youth-oriented movies are definitely a major part of our business," he said. "Willie Sutton said he robed banks because that's where the money was, and you can say the same of these kinds of movies since young people are the ones who go to the movies every weekend." The company, which is also focusing on older-skewing projects across many genres, had picked up Twilight in turnaround from Paramount. »

Stewart enters 'Twilight' zone

16 November 2007 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Kristen Stewart will star in Summit Entertainment's Twilight, a vampire thriller-romance based on Stephenie Meyer's best-seller. Catherine Hardwicke is directing from a script by Melissa Rosenberg.

Stewart will play Bella Swan, a 17-year-old who becomes drawn to classmate Edward, who is a vampire. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward's nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.

Twilight and its sequels have topped best-seller lists at the New York Times and USA Today and has garnered legions of devoted teenage fans. Summit is looking at the movie as a potential franchise with a Romeo and Juliet-like hook.

Production begins in February.

Karen Rosenfelt and Greg Mooradian are producing along with Mark Morgan via his Maverick Films banner.

Erik Feig, along with Summit senior vp production Geoff Shaevitz and creative executive Gillian Bohrer, will oversee the project for the studio.

Stewart most recently appeared in Sean Penn's Into the Wild and has a trio of movies in the can, including What Just Happened, in which she appears alongside Penn and Robert De Niro. »
