2018 Oscar nominations surprise: Jake Gyllenhaal, Patrick Stewart, Robert Pattinson or …? [Poll]
We previously asked readers which actress they thought would score the most shocking Oscar nomination. A performer who may have garnered early critical support but saw their Oscar hopes dimmed when industry groups forgot about them. And now it’s time to look at which men in the race could pull off a similar feat.

Past examples of men who defied the odds include Tommy Lee Jones (“In the Valley of Elah”), virtually absent from awards chatter, with only a couple small critics groups nominating him. Somehow he muscled his way to a surprise Best Actor Oscar nomination. Industry groups like SAG and BAFTA have similarly ignored plenty of strong performances this year. Take a look at five such actors and vote in our poll below to let us know which actor you think will be this year’s most shocking nomination.

Attraction (Prityazhenie) movie review: when Et is dreamy

MaryAnn’s quick take… It has a spectacular opening sequence, and features a few minor tweaks to alien-invasion tropes. But the teen romance at its center reduces this to a very inconsequential first contact. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction geek

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

A few years ago, Fedor Bondarchuk directed the first ever Russian film shot in 3D IMAX, the historical action drama Stalingrad, which was a huge box office hit there. Now he’s back with Attraction, another huge hit in 3D IMAX in Russia last year. The film is not, alas, being released in 3D IMAX in the UK, which is a shame only because the spectacle of its opening sequence might just about make the movie worth paying for, too experience it in such a dramatic format.

Culture Dump #22: The Franchises That Audiences Forgot

It may seem like all cinemas have to offer at the moment are glossy CGI superheroes and audience-dividing Star Wars adventures but look between the frames and you’ll see something that’s currently going unnoticed – and for good reason. It’s the waning dregs of the franchises that audiences forgot. More specifically, the would-be young adult franchises. You know the type – the ones that were adapted from popular young adult novels and came complete with soundtracks chock full of floppy-haired indie bands – and to everyone’s surprise, they’re not quite dead yet.

It feels like ever since the whirlwind success of series like Twilight and The Hunger Games studios have constantly been on the lookout for the next tween-tale they can spin into Hollywood gold. However the formula for success isn’t always as cut-and-dry as simply finding a colourfully dystopian future and a couple of beautifully moody

Love, Simon Trailer Has Nick Robinson Searching for His Love Story

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Love, Simon, based on the hit 2016 novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. This critically-acclaimed tale explores how one young man will go to great lengths to find his own love story, even if it means he has to come out as gay to his family and friends. While recent teen love stories like Everything, Everything failed to make a dent at the box office, it's possible this could be the genre's next big hit, along the same lines as The Fault in Our Stars.

Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it's a little more complicated: he's yet to tell his family or friends he's gay and he doesn't actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he's fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Riverdale,

Charlie's Angels Reboot Begins Shooting This Spring

Charlie's Angels are reportedly going to be back in action very soon. Sony has been, in a somewhat under the radar fashion, developing a reboot of the Charlie's Angels franchise. Things have been a bit quiet, but it sounds like the project is coming together behind-the-scenes and will begin shooting this Spring, starting on April 18. Filming is expected to take place in Budapest, Hungary, which has become a popular filming location in recent years.

Everyone is on the hunt for a big franchise right now and Sony could certainly use one. While they've got their Spider-Man spin-offs like Venom and Silver and Black coming down the pipeline, their success is far from guaranteed. Not only that, but now actually seems like possibly the perfect time for a Charlie's Angels reboot, given the success of female-driven movies right now. If Sony executes this in the right way, this could be a

“Pitch Perfect” Franchise Has Grossed Over Half a Billion Worldwide

“Pitch Perfect 3”

The Barden Bellas have sung their way past a major milestone. The “Pitch Perfect” franchise has now grossed more than $500 million worldwide, Deadline reports. We’d say half a billion dollars calls for a celebratory rendition of “Cups.” The third installment of the Anna Kendrick-led series dropped in U.S. theaters December 22.

Pitch Perfect 3” has earned over $98 million worldwide so far, and while it doesn’t seem destined to be a huge box office success — especially compared to the first two films — it’s far from a flop. With a budget of $45 million (excluding print and advertising), the latest, and supposedly final, chapter of the aca-saga is doing perfectly respectable numbers.

The original “Pitch Perfect” earned over $115 million worldwide and the sequel took in over $287 million, with respective budgets of $17 and $29 million (again, before print and advertising costs were factored in). They struck box office gold,
