Storyline

Larry Boyd is having a bad day. He's been chased by dogs, his band sounds pathetic, and his allergies seem to be getting worse. It's not just a bad day, it's a bad hair day...suddenly he is growing thick, long hair on his arms and legs. Even more troubling, his friends seem to be disappearing. Larry know they never should have used that old bottle of Instant -Tan, could that have something to do with these strange occurrences? Can Hairy Larry get to the bottom of this before he ends up like the rest of his friends... hair one day, gone tomorrow? Written by Anonymous

Young Larry finds himself being hounded as he tries to visit friends.

Aaron Bartkiw stars as Larry Boyd in this enjoyable, lighthearted Goosebumps episode. Larry is followed around by pestering dogs quite a lot and he doesn't like it. Especially when he just wants to get to his friends and start band practice. Band practice that day involves the usual cacophony but then the group find some instant tanning lotion and start trying it out. After some peer pressure, Larry also gives it a try, despite the fact that it's out of date by a few years. A tan doesn't develop but, over the next few days, hair does and it's very embarrassing for Larry. He would spend a lot of time hiding from his friends if it wasn't for the fact that they seem to be hiding themselves.

While it may not be as scary as some of the other Goosebumps episodes, this does have a twist or two as the tale unfolds and it makes up for the lack of any real tension with a lot of good fun. The discussions about the embarrassing hair growth will make many people laugh, working well as a plot device and also an obvious analogy for one of the standard stages of puberty.

Everything else in this episode, from the writing (by Michael Short, based on the book by R. L. Stine, of course) to the direction by David Warry- Smith to the acting, is on a par with the rest of season one. And, best of all, I didn't even see the ending coming.
