Greek erotic cinema lives again?, 17 August 2008

Deep End is an erotic thriller about adultery. As the director says, this kind of film is rarely made in Greece.

The story could have been more developed in terms of character and originality. The dialog pretty much sucked- many parts of it had nothing to do with reality or with how real people talk in their everyday lives. It was too "polished" as if the movie was made for television. To be honest I hadn't predicted the twist ending while watching this. Not because it was too hard to do so, but probably because I was laughing my ass off and couldn't stop.

Speaking of TV, there is a "straight to TV" feel to this movie and this becomes obvious even from the opening credits sequence, the fonts that are used, etc. Not to mention the cast which mostly consists of TV actors and the director who used to make straight to VHS movies in the 80s. Another thing that makes this feel like a TV-movie: hot men, hot women, rich characters betraying each other- come on this has nothing to do with the ugly world we live in. NOBODY cares about the life of a perfect-looking rich guy who lives at Ekali. Are you a fan of LAMPSI Mr. Antoniou?

Oh, some of the scenes looked as if they were made only to display the "beauty of our country" and attract tourists. Such as the intro with the dance music and underwater shots that seem to be part of the film for no reason at all. The jeep scenes also look like a Jeep commercial.

Korinthiou (the reason everybody watched this) wasn't too bad although I think it was wise of the director to give her only a few lines. She is no Tina Spathi from any point of view but she seems to be trying. Steroid-abuser/pretty boy Kostas Sommer was a bit better than expected too. Alekos Sisovitis who is supposed to be the most experienced member of the cast is far worse (overacting most of time) and Tony Dimitriou should change profession- he is certainly one of the worst actors out there. Natalia Lionaki was horrible as well- she should stick to TV. Oh and she should also avoid singing (if you have watched the dreadful "making of" you know what I mean).

The music score is another problem. It isn't too bad but It is too much for the movie (probably would have worked in a "bigger" movie) and also it keeps playing throughout its whole length. The main song is quite catchy though.

This is obviously brainless trash, focusing on muscles and tits but there's nothing wrong with that and I would happily watch more Greek movies like this for a good laugh.
