How TMZ Owned 2014 and Became a Reputable Source for Celebrity News

  • VH1.com
View Photo Gallery

Without a doubt, 2014 was TMZ‘s year. The former celebrity rag has been working hard to become a reputable source of news, and has stepped up its game to provide some of the year’s most thoroughly reported celebrity stories. When TMZ first launched in beta in 2005, it was an exercise in gossipmongering, designed to rival sites like Perez Hilton and Just Jared. TMZ’s first “big” story was obtaining and disseminating video of Paris Hilton‘s drunken car accident in 2005. In those early days, TMZ was predominantly a source for scandal, rather than investigative journalism or “hard” news. If a celebrity so much as sneezed, you could bet TMZ would be there to turn it into a circus, regardless of the relevance or even the voracity of the claims.

Since then, TMZ has increasingly built its own portfolio of investigative journalism. In 2014, the site was responsible

Corey Feldman Wants a Magical 'Goonies 2' Script

Corey Feldman Wants a Magical 'Goonies 2' Script
The biggest story of the year broke this past weekend when director Richard Donner confirmed that he is moving forward on The Goonies 2 with the entire cast (except for Anne Ramsey and John Matuszak, aka Sloth, R.I.P.) returning to reprise their roles. Was this for real? Or was Richard Donner just continuing to fan the flames of a pipedream that has long been discussed at Warner Bros.? According to original star Corey Feldman, a sequel is most certainly in the works. But will it happen?

Corey Feldman is quite an active voice on Twitter, and confirmed yesterday that director Richard Donner had approached him about The Goonies 2 a few months ago. Of course our beloved Felddog wants to return, but he's heard this story before. Donner has been threatening to make this follow-up for years, and this time, he claims to have Steven Spielberg coming along as an executive producer,

Tsr Blog: Cameos for Sale, TMZ, and More: How ‘Veronica Mars’ Investigates Film in 2014

The zeitgeist within Veronica Mars’ resurrection as a major motion picture reflects directly onto film’s current state. Fans may delight in the sleuthing shenanigans that abound in co-writer/director Rob ThomasVeronica Mars, replete with its billion cameos and its seance-like atmosphere. But as an outsider to Mars’ world of Neptune, CA, I was struck more by the film’s observance on the forces that are currently shaping movies, for better or for worse. Considering its existence as a crowdfunding success, its endorsement of product placement, its interest in celebrity journalism, and its feature presentation as a TV movie, Veronica Mars approximately defines the current state of our creation, and consumption, of cinema as popular entertainment.

When gauging the project’s relevancy to modern film, one must talk about its background as a Kickstarter movie. Veronica Mars is one of the first major film projects out the gate to

Warner Bros Talk Show ‘The Real’ To Launch In Fall 2014 On Fox Stations & Bet

Another daytime player is entering the fray for fall 2014. Following a successful four-week test on seven Fox owned-and-operated stations this past summer, Warner Bros TV Distribution/Telepictures’ syndicated daytime panel talk show The Real will get a nationwide rollout next fall with the Fox TV Stations as a launch group. Additionally, the show, hosted by Tamera Mowry-Housley, Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon and Jeannie Mai and executive produced by Sally Ann Salsano (Jersey Shore), will get a second window on Bet following the model of The Wendy Williams Show, which also airs on the Fox stations after a successful summer test run, as well as on Bet. The two-year deal for The Real comes on the heels of Wbtvd signing a three-year pact with the Fox stations for TMZ On TV offshoot TMZ Live. Insiders say the two shows could easily co-exist (TMZ Live does not require a national

‘TMZ Live’ Renewed Through 2017 On Fox TV Stations, Eyes Fall 2014 Us Expansion

Updated: TMZ’s TV footprint is fast expanding. The Fox TV Stations have picked up TMZ Live through 2017 as I hear the one-hour live daily series is eyeing a nationwide rollout in fall 2014. The strip, featuring Harvey Levin and his motley crew of gossipmongers, is the second TMZ-branded syndicated daily program from Warner Bros, along with six-year-old TMZ On TV, which also airs on the Fox stations under a long-term pickup. Unlike TMZ On TV, which started on television, TMZ Live originated online before migrating to the Fox L.A. affiliate Kttv last year, gradually expanding to other Fox stations in fall 2012 and this fall. The series, which ranks as the top talk show in the Fox markets among women 25-54 and adults 25-54, now airs on all Fox stations after Charlotte’s Wjzy began carrying the program this week.
