It's an induction day for the new Year Sevens, with some sixth formers along to help. There's a toddler on the loose - Kimberley, Sarah-Jane's sister. Sarah-Jane's older sister, Paula, is supposed to be looking after Kimberley, but is instead giving moral support to the basketball players. Mr. Robson announces a new "house" system - initially named after colours, but with a competition set to come up with better names. The school secretary agrees to look after the toddler, while Mr. Robson shows Sarah Jane around. Dennis has been commissioned to get drinks for the basketball players, but he's waylaid by Mrs Maguire who gets him to buy nappies for Kimberley. The new English teacher, Miss Carver is also shown around. Joe's cosy little chat with Jessica is spoilt when Sarah Jane tells her that she knows Joe because he goes out with her sister. There's a bit of a problem in the canteen - a full set of meals has been prepared, despite there only being one year's worth of kids present. Kimberley wanders off again, and destroys Mr. Brisley's still life fruit display and gets covered in paint. Wayne's pig impressions (aimed at Kevin, who's father is a policeman) annoy Sarah Jane, so she changes tables. In the canteen, Paula finally arrives to claim the rampant Kimberley. Miss Carver asks how sociable the staff are: Mr. Parrott tells her that "a sense of humour is essential", just as he sits down in a chair covered in custard! In the playground, Wayne's constant niggling at Kevin erupts into a short-lived fight. As Mr. Robson argues with the caterer about the excess of meals, one of the pupils who over indulged is sick on her shoes... Then the first proper day begins... Anna seems to be living a feral existence - no food or money in the house, she sets off to school. There's rebellion in the canteen when it seems that the previous day's leftovers are being served up. As Mr. Robson authorizes a refund, a girl tells him that she's just seen a scruffy stranger wandering around the school. He's looking for Anna Wright, and she's very pleased to see him...
On Induction Day there are some new faces. Sarah-Jane's little sister goes rampant, a new house system is introduced, and there's trouble brewing in the canteen.
