If disabled, we could end up being unable to deliver power to many millions of people: a blackout of that scale would almost certainly result in rioting in major cities. Even more critical, are the water treatment and distribution systems, sabotaging key damns and sewage processing plants, they can contaminate water on a massive scale. Deaths from poisoning would be "substantial" up front, massive casualties would soon follow after as people begin to die from dehydration

  Ethan Kanin : Is there any way to protect these systems?

  Dr. Cornell : The only way would be shutting them down and within a short time, it would be impossible to supply the population with sufficient food and clean water: resulting civil unrest would undoubtedly "aggravate" the situation
