Mark Wahlberg Calls 'Six Billion Dollar Man' a Superhero

24 December 2014 7:18 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While singer-turned-actor Mark Wahlberg may be considered a Hollywood renaissance man, there is one entertainment occupation he has yet to hold down. And that's portraying a superhero. While he has a vast amount of different genre films under his belt, he's never donned a cape or a pair of spandex pants. And while that won't change anytime soon, he does claim his upcoming adaptation of the 70s action series The Six Million Dollar Man, now aptly called The Six Billion Dollar Man, will fall into the comic book genre.

Speaking with Collider to promote his Christmas day release The Gambler, he was asked if he'd ever want to take on a superhero movie. He answers this by revealing that The Six Billion Dollar Man will actually be portrayed as a superhero. Just not the kind we're used to seeing. Though, he won't start on the movie until after he's finished Deepwater Horizon. »

Wahlberg: "6 Billion Dollar Man" Is A Superhero

24 December 2014 3:58 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mark Wahlberg is as busy as ever, and in the lead up to Christmas he has been engaged in his press commitments for this week's release of "The Gambler". During the various interviews he conducted, the topic of his involvement with "The Six Billion Dollar Man" came up.

A movie adaptation of the classic Lee Majors-led 1970s television series "The Six Million Dollar Man," reports came last month that Wahlberg and his "Lone Survivor" director Peter Berg would reunite on the project. Asked by Collider about potentially starring in a superhero film in the future, the actor brought up "The Six Billion Dollar Man" on his own and suggests it is structurally very similar to the superhero genre:

"We're talking about doing Six Billion Dollar Man, which is very much a superhero, but I don’t have to wear any kind of spandex cape.  So that would be cool. »

Mark Wahlberg Says Six Billion Dollar Man Is A "Superhero" Movie

23 December 2014 6:45 PM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

You could've referred to Mark Wahlberg ("The Gambler") as the billion dollar man based on the box office performance of his last film Transformers: Age of Extinction. Apparently, that wasn't good enough for Marky Mark as we'll be referring to him as The Six Billion Dollar Man in the near future. Last month, is was reported that Wahlberg would team up with his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg ("Hancock") for a film adaptation of the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man, aka The Bionic Man, which starred Lee Majors ("The Fall Guy"). Wahlberg briefly spoke of the project with Collider: Any plans for you to be a superhero in the future? Wahlberg:  We’re talking about doing Six Billion Dollar Man, which is very much a superhero, but I don’t have to wear any kind of spandex cape.  So that would be cool.  Howard Gordon is writing »

Why Hollywood Isn’t Freaking Over Bummer 2014 Box Office

23 December 2014 5:56 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

With the holiday season soft, it’s clear the 2014 domestic box office is going to wind up down from last year by nearly 5 percent. So why aren’t we hearing more groans and gnashing of teeth from Hollywood executives?

It’s because despite the downturn, the majority of the studios made money on their movies. Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros. and Sony should all — to varying degrees — wind up in the black on their film slates.

The fact that 2015 has a shot to be the biggest on record is brightening Hollywood’s mood, too. Among the heavyweight films set »

'WWE Raw': Ziggler, Harper, Cena and Rollins Save Christmas

23 December 2014 8:32 AM, PST | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

It was three nights till Christmas, and all through the Target Center, many a WWE fan was stirring, eager for their heroes to triumphantly enter.

A few did deliver, sending many a shiver, though others fell flat as they took to the mat. But thank goodness, as always, I'm here to unwrap the most bountiful of all pro-wrestling recaps. So far as last night's Raw, here's five things that I took away, and to paraphrase Fo-Fo Foley Claus, I hope you all have a nice holiday!

How This Year's Pack of Holiday Openers Impacts the Oscar Race

20 December 2014 11:00 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Below, listed alphabetically, are all the films in the awards mix opening over the next two weeks, at least in Academy voter hubs Los Angeles and New York. If you don't live there, good luck seeing most of these before the Golden Globes (Jan.11) or Oscar nominations (Jan. 15). They will reach most major markets by Oscar night Feb. 22.   I recap the three unreleased titles on the Foreign Language short list with American distributors at the end. American Sniper (Warner Bros.) 12/25 - New York, Los Angeles 1/16 - Wide Following the pattern set by previous Clint Eastwood awards contenders as well as the similar "Lone Survivor" last year, this is opening narrow on Thursday before its wide availability next month.  Big Eyes (Weinstein) 12/25 - Wide Originally intended as a mid-level opening, TWC just announced (likely because of the opportunity afforded by Sony's "The Interview" pull-out) that this will have a much wider, »

New 'American Sniper' trailer swells with action, music, and praise-filled quotes

19 December 2014 8:06 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Do you ever think you’ve seen things or done things that you wish you hadn’t?" goes the new trailer for "American Sniper." For those who haven’t, the two-minute sizzle reel is happy to oblige. Starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, considered one of the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, "American Sniper" jumps back and forth between military operations and the Seal's life back at home. He struggles on both fronts. The film costars Sienna Miller, Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell, but seems to entrench itself inside Kyle’s mind as he navigates his noble and peculiar life. The film comes from Clint Eastwood, the man behind such war pictures as "Flags of Our Fathers," "Letters from Iwo Jima," and "Jersey Boys" (maybe that last one just felt that way). The film earned lackluster reviews out of its AFI Fest »

The shocking death of Robin Williams reverberated around the world, as evidenced by the actor topping Google's 2014 list of trending searches.

‘Dragon 2′ Maintains Perch Atop Home Video Sales Charts During Thanksgiving Frenzy

4 December 2014 7:19 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As usual, Black Friday and the long Thanksgiving Day weekend threw a wrench into the home video sales charts, which normally are dominated by new releases.

Instead, deep discounting of recent hits by big retail chains such as Walmart, Target and Best Buy led to a buying surge in which the handful of new releases that arrived in stores Nov. 25 literally got lost in the shuffle.

Only two newly released theatricals, both from Lionsgate, even made the top 20 the week ending Nov. 30. “The Expendables 3,” with a domestic box office take of $39.3 million, debuted at No. 4 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, Blu-ray Disc and DVD combined, and “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas,” which earned $52.5 million on the big screen during the 2013 holiday season, bowed at No. 13.

November Box Office Down 10 Percent from Last Year

3 December 2014 4:17 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, Big Hero 6 and Interstellar led the way in November, but their collective strength wasn't enough to take the month to record levels.During the second-to-last month of the year, aggregate domestic box office totaled $965 million, which is off 10 percent from last year. It's also down from the 2012 record ($1.09 billion). The year-to-year drop can be attributed to a weaker late-month line-up. While Mockingjay earned a massive $225.7 million during November, that's significantly lower than Catching Fire's $282 million last year. Also, the Thanksgiving openers (Horrible Bosses 2, Penguins of Madagascar) combined for just $58.2 million over the five-day frame, while Frozen alone grossed $78.4 million over the last four days of November in 2013.At the end of November, year-to-date box office was down four percent to $9.45 billion. Even if December box office is above-average*likely, but not a guarantee*the best-case scenario is that 2014 winds up around $10.6 billion, »

Film Review: ‘Kajaki: The True Story’

28 November 2014 9:28 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If ever a film had no need for an in-title assertion of its fact-based nature, it’s British war pic “Kajaki: The True Story”: Few screenwriters would devise a battlefield scenario quite this spare and anxious. Covering an exceptionally grueling day in the collective life of a British army unit stationed near the eponymous Afghan dam in 2006, Paul Katis’ rigorously realized debut feature initially lulls unsuspecting viewers with its droll, authentic portrait of base camp routine, before a surprise excursion into a landmine-ridden riverbed steers matters sharply into urgent (and bloody) life-or-death territory. Comparable to Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” in its prioritization of ground-level experience over more generalized political commentary, “Kajaki’s” potential resonance is by no means limited to Blighty, where it opens theatrically on Nov. 28.

From its Afghanistan-set band-of-brothers premise to its thorough closing montage of the story’s real-life subjects, “Kajaki” may put »

Tech Support: Will 'Interstellar's' woes cost it Oscar attention in the sound mixing race?

20 November 2014 1:10 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed. »

SAG Awards Honor Stunt Ensembles Who Put Action in Filmmaking

The hours before the live broadcast of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on TNT are always filled with prognosticating and fashion, but there are also two coveted honors that are announced as guests make their way down the red carpet: the stunt ensemble awards for film and TV.

Since the 14th annual SAG Awards in 2008, stunt ensembles from film and TV have been recognized for their excellence, as well as their contributions to safety on set. As with all SAG Awards categories, nominees are determined by the respective 2,200-member film and TV SAG nominating committees, and the entire membership of about 100,000 votes on the winners.

“These folks are putting their lives on the line, and they’re so integral to the process and work so closely with our members. Even if they are not performing the stunts themselves, they are training our actors,” says SAG Awards executive producer Kathy Connell. »

Peter Berg to direct high-minded drug cartel story 'Hunt for El Chapo'

19 November 2014 9:11 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Patrick Radden Keefe's New Yorker story "The Hunt for El Chapo" is a terrifying, bizarre, and occasionally funny look at modern drug trafficking. Delving into the lavish world of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, Keefe finds a quirky character pulling strings for a murderous bunch who love their Instagram. The DEA manhunt for Loera, that ended this past February, lasted a decade. The best kingpins can live a life of luxury and still avert paramilitary. Loera was the best of the best. Those are the types that get movies made about their lives. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Universal has picked up the rights to "El Chapo," for its "Lone Survivor" director Peter Berg to helm. After that gritty military war film earned more than franchise wannabe "Battleship," the studio is in a position to let Berg do whatever the heck he wants. He’ll »
