Universal Pictures announced today that it will be releasing director Peter Berg’s (The Rundown) Navy Seal film Lone Survivor on January 10, 2014. Based on the bestselling non-fiction book of the same name, the film tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The film’s impressive cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana. Berg and Kitsch are coming off of last summer’s bomb Battleship, but both have proven themselves to be quite talented in the past, so hopefully Lone Survivor is a return to form. The film will likely open in New York and Los Angeles at the end of December to qualify for awards season, and will face off against the Sylvester Stallone/Robert De Niro boxing film Grudge Match »

Eric Bana stars in Deadfall as one of a pair of siblings (the other played by Olivia Wilde) who take ruthless measures to fend for themselves after a casino heist goes awry.
Digital Spy caught up with Bana last week to discuss playing an anti-hero, working with Wilde, and his memories of filming Star Trek with Jj Abrams.
What was it that appealed to you about Deadfall and your character, Addison?
"Zach [Dean]'s script was really intriguing, I wasn't really sure every ten pages what was going to happen next, so that really drew me in. And I just absolutely loved the character of Addison, I thought he'd written him in a way that made him very accessible to me. There was a really nasty sense of humour that pervaded through Addison that I just loved, and was one of the main reasons why I really wanted to attach myself straight away. »

Having conquered the world of sports as a wrestler, and proving his presence will uplift any franchise ("Fast Five," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"), Dwayne Johnson is ready to bring his swagger to the small screen, in a project produced by his good buddy and "Pain & Gain" co-star, Mark Wahlberg. HBO has given the thumbs up to a comedy pilot starring The Rock, with Peter Berg reteaming with his "The Rundown" star to direct. Penned by Steven Levinson ("Entourage") the show will be set in Miami, and will follow the lives of athletes, both retired and still active, with Johnson to take one of the lead roles. That's about all the details for now, but the network seems to be pretty happy, with production on the pilot slated to begin in the fall. Unless it's a disaster, we doubt this will have a problem getting a series order. And since we've mentioned Berg, »

Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg obviously had fun working together on Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain. They’re teaming back up again – albeit with The Rock as an actor and Wahlberg just producing – for an HBO show about retired athletes living in Miami.Wahlberg is working with Entourage writer/producer Stephen Levinson to write the script. Peter Berg, who recently directed Wahlberg on Lone Survivor and is also attached to Damon Lindelof’s HBO show The Leftovers, is on to direct the pilot. If it goes to series, Johnson would star as one of several athletes making their way in the world after leaving the glamorous, high-powered life of, among other sports, American Football. It’s not the first time he’ll be on the small screen: the wrestler-turned-actor-turned-tweeting superstar also has a reality competition show called The Hero due on Us TV next month. Pain & Gain, meanwhile, hits UK »

While Peter Berg has had some successes as a director, from the $200 million hit Hancock to the TV show-spawning Friday Night Lights, his last film was not one of them. Battleship cost Universal a reported $209 million to make and only managed to make $65 million domestically, and while it did fairly well overseas - pulling in $237 million - it was still considered a disappointment. But Berg hasn't let it get him down. He has already completed production on his next film, the Seal drama Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, and Eric Bana, and while he's still preparing that project for it's November 15th release date it looks as though he's already found his next potential gig. Deadline has learned that the director is looking to teaming up with Focus Features to tell the tragic story of notable hockey enforcer Derek Boogaard, who played in the National Hockey League from »

Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde star in a new trailer for Deadfall.
The pair play siblings on the run after a botched heist in the thriller from director Stefan Ruzowitzky.
The siblings are forced to split up in the middle of a blizzard, with Bana's Addison embarking on a murderous spree on his way through the country.
Liza (Wilde) is picked up by ex-boxer Jay (Charlie Hunnam) on her way to her parents' (Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson) Thanksgiving gathering. The pair then reunite for a tense showdown at the house.
Deadfall received a limited release at Us cinemas in December, and was released on DVD last month. There are currently no plans for a UK cinema release.
Last year, Bana was said to be in talks to appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Ben Foster in the adaptation of Marcus Luttrell's 2007 memoir Lone Survivor. »

What is the news here my editor you might ask? For those of us still invested in his career (and the length of his hair, it’s longer!), it’s that we haven’t seen many photos of Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch since he was promoting Savages in June 2012. Last night, the former Canadian Junior Hockey League player was snapped enjoying the Ducks-Kings game in L.A. with a small beer, a big grin, and a Riggins-esque wardrobe. In short, we’re as happy as he looks in this pic.
Professionally, Kitsch next appears in Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor »
