All too real in a covid-19 world
fanofsgirl8 August 2020
I hadn't caught this series first time round but while shielding I began the series this afternoon. Bearing in mind this was released in 2007 I find the plotline all too real to believe in a world brought to virtual standstill 13 years later. I find the actors in this series to be largely believeable, despite the domestic storyline of the characters being a little formulaic. The plot of the actual episodes are interesting enough to keep me watching and the characters are likeable enough for the audience to want to know and care about what the outcome of the cases are. This premise that what was a genuine threat could then be turned to monetary gain is so commonplace in our collective consciousness with many news reports of "Big Pharma" and accusations of anything from profiteering on fear to a campaign of alleged removal of figures prominent in alternative natural imune therapies. I think the writers came up with a decent enough plot, with the very human face of some of the key figures in the deception adding an extra dimension to the drama unfolding. It has had the hieghtened experience of any audience today being able to appreciate the climate of fear being felt by the general public in the wake of so many deaths due to covid-19. At a time when the actual pandemic we're experiencing has shown unscupulous manufacturers and sellers of anything from facemasks and gloves to vitamin D profiteering by the mark-ups levied against a very worried public the aim of the villains is not too far fetched. An entertaining watch I'd recommend people to watch.
