Disappointingly superficial look at an impressive aspect of the main film, 16 November 2007

One of the things that the film Blades of Glory did well was to not
only lampoon and exaggerate the world of ice skating, but to do it in a
way that is still convincing as the world itself. The main way it
achieved this for me was in the absurd but not too unbelievable
collection of costumes that the skaters wore. This film looks at those
and has the actors talk affectionately about them for the short running
time. This is a worthy addition to the extras but I was disappointed by
how superficial it was.
The actual woman behind the costumes got about 4 seconds of screen time
and that was it. I would have been interested to hear her talk about
her ideas and designs and how they fitted with the ice skating world
and only have the actors as padding round the edges of the film.
Instead we got the opposite, with her totally put to one side. I'm not
sure why this was done but the result is a superficial film with little
to say even if the subject is a worthy one.
Come on, don't go, 3 November 2009

This is one of the handful or so of featurettes on the Blades of Glory DVD. It consists of interviews, behind the scenes footage and clips from the film. Can somebody explain to me... why is this so short? 4 and a half minutes! Its subject matter is genuinely interesting, because while ridiculously overdone(and that's the tone of the movie's fault, anyway), the costumes were definitely an impressive part of the picture. While there is information(most of the talking heads get at least a tidbit or two) in this, it's all gone over so quickly and utterly superficially. You basically get a brief, and not that detailed, rundown of each of the major outfits, and the actors talk about how "far out" the stuff looks and such. It's cool to hear the designer talk, but it's over almost as soon as it starts! The editing is good. Pacing is fast, since this is so brief. I guess they just really didn't want anything straightforward and engaging on the disc. While this does have a crude description or two, apart from that, there is no offensive content in this. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the subject. 5/10
