- While sitting in prison awaiting trial for the bludgeon murder of Bonteen, Finn becomes despondent as he feels that the circumstantial evidence against him has convinced his friends and constituents that he may indeed be guilty. The Pallsers and the Chilterns underwrite his defense as wily defense barrister Chaffanbrass reluctantly agrees to interview his client. Plantagenet forbids Marie and Glencora from visiting the Irishman, but Laura does get in to see him. Madame Goesler does discover some evidence that may implicate Emilius in the murder, so she journeys to Prague to finish the job begun by Bonteen.—duke10029@aol.com
- Phineas Finn is in jail, awaiting trial for the murder of Mr. Bonteen. All of his friends rally around him, but the evidence, including Lord Fawn's testimony all works against him. There is a consensus that Mr. Emilius is the murderer but he seems to have an airtight alibi. Mrs Max Goesler takes up Phineas' case with a passion offering money to hire the best barrister available. She also decides to travel to Prague to see what evidence she might uncover. Laura Kennedy, now a widow, visits Phineas in prison and makes her feelings for him quite clear. Adelaide Palliser accepts Gerard Maule's proposal of marriage. They are penniless however and Glencora has a suggestion for her.—garykmcd
