When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide—driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

The dramatic comedy is directed by Shawn Levy, and based on the hilarious and poignant best-selling novel by Jonathan Tropper. It features a starring ensemble cast including Golden Globe winner Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development »

10 Minutes With 80s Icon Debra Winger at the Provincetown Film Festival

26 June 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If you were watching films in the 80s, chances are, you're a fan of Debra Winger. A relative unknown (save for her appearance as Wonder Girl in the "Wonder Woman" TV series), Winger kicked off the decade with a trifecta of hits -- "Urban Cowboy" (1980), "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982) and "Terms of Endearment" (1983) -- that made her a major Hollywood force in the short span of three years. Unfortunately for cinemagoers, that is no longer the case. Fortunately for Winger, that's of her own doing and not because Hollywood stopped fielding her offers. At 40, after a slew of commercial and art house successes, Winger stopped considering parts altogether, favoring a quieter life with her husband (Arliss Howard, who directed her in "Big Bad Love") and three children. She still acts from time to time on projects she's especially passionate about, such as Jonathan Demme's "Rachel Getting Married" and HBO's show "In. »

Top Ten: The Aughts

28 May 2014 8:49 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Last year I was throwin' up quickie top ten lists for each decade for archival and discussion purposes and tonight wI realized that I'd never finished the run skipping the Aughts and the 1920s and the 1910s (the latter two because I'd hoped to see more silent films before top ten'ing it). So herewith a revisit / rework of a "best of the aughts" list originally published in 2010 but many of you have joined us since!.

Care to share yours?

01 Moulin Rouge! dir. Baz Luhrmann (2001)

The party of the decade. The inspired mashup conductor (Baz) and his darling stars (Nicole, Ewan, Jim) put on the messiest craziest livelest funniest tearjerking "Spectacular! Spectacular!" show on earth. I'd never claim it's a perfect movie but flaws are endearing when you love madly and deeply. and Love Is All You Need.

02 Brokeback Mountain dir. Ang Lee (2005)

A love story for the ages. And one that quietly enrages. »

Robert Redford Will Preach In Jonathan Demme's 'Come Sunday,' Vincent Cassel Joins 'Great Mystical Circus' & More

22 May 2014 11:54 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Jonathan Demme's last mainstream picture to grace the silver screen was 2008's much celebrated "Rachel Getting Married," the film that solidified Anne Hathaway as a "serious actress." Since then, the helmer has busied himself with a host of documentaries, though he does have the Ibsen play adaptation "A Master Builder," starring Wallace Shawn, opening on July 23rd in New York. Before that film sees the light of day, however, comes news of Demme's next picture, titled "Come Sunday," a look into the world of evangelical preachers—and he's got an ever-reliable thespian and a living legend in talks to star. Jeffrey Wright would take the lead, portraying Carlton Pearson, former pastor of the one largest churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After publicly doubting the existence of Hell and promoting universal reconciliation, Pearson was ousted and became a pariah to the point that he was branded a heretic by his peers. »

10 Unusual Film Roles That Helped Actors Avoid Being Typecast

Even really good actors seem to fall into a certain type that they revert back to over and over again. Roles that are in their comfort zone, so they have confidence in their ability to perform. Think about Daniel Day-Lewis, one of the greatest actors alive — even he has a type of character that he likes to portray. And really, you can’t blame them. After all, the reason casting directors keep bringing them in for the same kind of roles is because they’re pretty good at it.

But then there are some actors who make a conscious effort to avoid being typecast, by strategically taking roles that are so far from their normal fare that filmmakers and audiences can’t help but see them in a different light. It’s never too late for an actor to reinvent themselves in the eyes of both the industry and audiences, »

Meryl Streep can sing, but can she rock? There is a difference, but I'm very confident the incredibly talented actress will be able to pull it off in her new film, Ricki And The Flash. Meryl Streep Will Rock Out in Diablo Cody's 'Ricki and the Flash'

1 April 2014 7:31 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

TriStar Productions today announced an all-star band of film talent will collaborate on Ricki and the Flash. Produced by Marc Platt and Mason Novick, the film unites Oscar winners Diablo Cody, who wrote the original screenplay, director Jonathan Demme, and Meryl Streep, who will star in the title role.

Ricki and the Flash is the funny and touching story of a rock n' roll-loving woman who chased her tattered dream at the price of her family, but gets a last chance to, perhaps, make things right. Streep, the most Oscar-nominated actor in history, is well known for her singing prowess on stage and screen (Mamma Mia!, Into the Woods), but Ricki is a new gig even for the musically gifted star: a guitar-wielding, hard rockin' mamma by night and grocery store checkout lady by day.

Get ready for Meryl Streep to rock out in 'Ricki and the Flash'

1 April 2014 4:13 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Last week, we passed along news of a rather intriguing new project for 18-time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep: an untitled Diablo Cody script, to be directed by Jonathan Demme, in which she'd play a fame-hungry mother reuniting with her estranged family. Today, a few more choice details were announced, beginning with a title: the film is to be called "Ricki and the Flash." Tastier still: Streep will be unleashing her inner rock chick. Deadline describes the project as the story of an aspiring rock singer who abandons her family to pursue her musical career, working as a checkout clerk by day and gigging by night, before getting one last chance to reconcile with her daughter. (Shades of "The Wrestler?") This is terrain Demme should know well, having directed concert documentaries for Talking Heads and Neil Young, as well as music videos for the likes of Bruce Springsteen; you can »

Meryl Streep, Diablo Cody Teaming For Rocker Drama Ricky And The Flash

26 March 2014 11:44 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

An exceptionally told story can be enough to get a movie picked up by a studio. But it always helps if that project also has three Academy Award winners attached to it. Such is the case with the oddly-named Ricky and the Flash, a drama that Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme would direct from a script written by Juno.s Diablo Cody, with Meryl Streep set to take on the leading role. How much do you want to bet this one doesn.t get dumped into a January release date? No production company is attached yet, but producers, including Mark Platt (Demme.s Rachel Getting Married), are currently shopping the project around to larger studios that are capable of financing. It.s a good tactic, as this trio will almost certainly deliver something critically acclaimed, and TheWrap reports the two studios that have shown interest in Ricky and »
