- Grace and the team pull out all the stops for a missing woman whom Grace has a gut feeling is dead, but the family dynamics complicate the investigation; Clay joins the police department's Explorer program; and Butch deals with the consequences of not calling.—layle
- Clay joins the Police Explorers, and confronts Ham about his affair with Grace. The appearance of a troubled sister and brother in the squad room leads to an investigation into their missing mother. Clay's stint in the Explorers is short-lived due to his father's disapproval.
- The cops race up in their van and storm out...but it's Grace's nephew and a bunch of kids, the police explorers. She leads them army marching style into the station.
Clay goes to talk to Ham. He tells him he knows about him and Grace. "I also know that you're married. That's not cool."
Ham tells Grace about it while speed-solving a Rubik's cube. He runs inside when a bird poops on him, leaving Grace outside. She sees an older girl shoving a boy across the street, but is distracted by Earl, who drops by to say Clay is turning out nicely.
Inside, Ham has gotten back at Clay by telling him to put his pants on backwards, which Clay did because Captain Perry told them to do whatever the officers say.
The girls moon over Butch, who fingerprints them.
The kids Grace saw across the street are waiting in the station. They talk to Grace, telling her their mom hasn't come home. Their parents are divorced. When the girl takes off her coat, Grace sees hickeys on her neck. She tells Grace their mom went to Tulsa to a casino. Her brother Tommy gives a detailed description of his mom's car.
Grace tells Butch and Bobby she has a bad feeling about the case. She pulls Ham aside for a special assignment.
Later, she asks Sophie about her hickeys, showing off her (no doubt fresh) own. Tommy acts bratty, mimicking everything his sister says. Grace tries to get his attention and grabs his arm. He scratches her badly and draws blood. A man comes in and, seeing Tommy freaking out, slaps him. Grace pins him to the table. It's the kid's dad, Richard. Outside in the squad room, Clay got knocked down and has a bump on his head.
Rhetta bandages his forehead. He's impressed at how fast the cops all moved.
Perry wants to know why they're working a missing persons case. Grace repeats her bad feeling. Ham likes dad for it, Grace likes 15-year-old Sophie.
Bobby reports mom Emily's gambling habit. Butch calls in, he found Emily's car. It's in good condition, unlocked. Still in town, not in Tulsa. Ham looks up dad's address, two blocks away from where the car was.
Ham interrogates Richard. He denies that he usually hits his kid. He keeps asking to see Tommy. He says Sophie is out of control. They adopted her when she was three. He describes her as "mean and selfish."
Grace watches her through the glass of an interrogation room then goes to talk to her. She talks about her own "childhood," showing Sophie a scar and saying her mom did it to her when she was high on meth. Sophie says her mom doesn't do drugs. She says her parents got in a huge fight on Friday and her dad wanted to take her phone. She says her boyfriend is the only person who cares about her. She says her mom was cool with her dating him.
Dad denies it.
Grace tells Sophie her instincts tell her her mom was kidnapped. Sophie tells Grace her mom had a boyfriend, Fred. That's what the fight with her dad was about.
Butch tests a stain in the car's trunk and texts Grace and Ham that it's blood.
Later, Grace and Clay watch Sophie through the glass as she texts. Grace isn't sure if she's in trouble yet.
Ham tells Grace no one knows any Fred. Grace thinks he's made up. Grace tells him every time she brought up mom, Sophie brought it back to dad.
Butch finds that mom has a pile of money in the bank, which she inherited.
Clay's dad Doug drops by, angry with Grace, not just because he has a band-aid and backwards pants. He didn't sign the consent form for the explorers. He's pulling Clay out of the program.
Grace complains about Doug to Rhetta and she tells Grace to back off. Grace hears none of it.
Grace goes to a skateboard park and intercepts Sophie's 19-year-old boyfriend Connor. She flirts with him, asking for a cigarette like a cougar on the prowl. She asks if she can watch him skate. He's flattered. She asks him if he has a girlfriend. He says no.
He asks if she wants to get high. She says no, but she likes her men high. He lights up. She asks to borrow his phone. She goes through the messages and finds lots of unread texts from Sophie asking where he is.
Ham comes out of the bushes and arrests Connor. Ham accuses him of killing Sophie's mom. He says he gets it, he'd do anything for Sophie. They put stoned Connor in a car.
At the station, they're comparing the kids text messages, including one from Sophie updating Connor that the cops think mom's been kidnapped. But Sophie hasn't texted anything for two hours - dad must have taken her phone.
At her house, Grace uses Connor's phone to send Sophie a text. Earl pops up and talks parenting with Grace.
Grace checks on Emily's car with Rhetta. The cigarettes in the ashtray had the filters torn off, the way Connor smokes his. And she found a man's watch.
Grace finally gets a text from Sophie. She replies that the cops know. Grace notices that the driver's seat is pushed back for a man. They think it's Connor until Rhetta notices a picture in the car showing Richard wearing the watch they just found.
Michelle from children's services stops by saying the kids are fine. She also lays into Butch - again - for not calling her.
Clay's at the station, looking for Grace in the stairwell. Earl finds him. Clay tells him about his dad changing his mind. Earl advises him to take on extra responsibility to prove to his dad he's ready for it. Clay sets off, determined.
Back in the station, Michelle says the kids are with their aunt. Richard says he lost the watch.
Sophie shows up. Grace talks with her.
She tells Sophie they're talking to Connor, and everyone who knew her mom. Sophie presents a bracelet that she says belonged to her mom. It has blood on it. She says she found it in her dad's desk. She says she thinks her dad killed her mom.
Grace, acting sympathetic, says they can't arrest him on circumstantial evidence. They need a body. She asks Sophie if her mom had a favorite spot.
Sophie "thinks" about it, choking up. As she tells Grace where to look, Ham, Bobby and a team follow her directions. Butch and Rhetta look into a spot in the backyard where they suspect Emily was killed. It's covered with blood. They find the body where Sophie suggested.
Bobby brings Grace a file that seems to disappoint her.
She brings Sophie in to see Tommy and her dad. Tommy runs and hugs his sister. Grace shows Tommy the picture of his mother's body.
Richard looks at Sophie, accusing her of killing her mother. Tommy confesses, saying that he hit her with a baseball bat because she was arguing with Sophie. He keeps hugging her. She says he didn't know what he was doing, but, Grace points out, she did.
Back at Grace's house, she drinks beer with Doug. She wants to know why he changed his mind about Clay. She badgers him until he finally blurts that he doesn't want Clay to be like her.
At the station, Ham and Bobby tell Butch that Michelle is waiting for him in the other room, and she was freaking out. He opens the door and sees her hanging from the ceiling and responds like someone seeing a hanging victim would. But it's a joke. She says howdy. They set him up.
Grace goes to talk to Clay, telling him they have to respect his dad's decisions even if they don't understand them. Earl appears, watching over the scene. The lid busts off a fire hydrant across the street. Because stuff like that happens around angels. Clay and Grace go splash in it, not a care in the world.
