Great episode
22 August 2009 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I've watched Saving Grace from the beginning. I was captivated by the premise, actors and creativity of the pilot. Unlike a lot of current television programs, as this one progressed it became emotionally contagious, for the most part because of Earl the Angel. The idea that he was there to help Grace find God or religion and not there to act as a Guardian Angel was a stroke of creative genius.

Next to the pilot, this is my favorite episode. There are a variety of reasons, but paramount was the loving interaction between Grace and Earl. While we've seen emotional moments between them before, there was a connection between them in this episode that illustrated as well as reminded us why Earl was there in the first place - to help Grace save herself.

As we discover in this episode there are other Angels out there and some Angels have better "people skills" than others. In this episode we learn that Earl's approach to saving souls is key to his success. But more importantly was the underlying issue of his love and understanding for humanity and Grace. Another stroke of genius.

This episode included a great performance by F. Murray Abraham as a somewhat inept Angel seemingly trying to discover the secrets of Earl's success. What Abraham's character really did was help reveal several important aspects of Earl's character we've all wanted to see. The conversations between Earl and Matthew were enlightening, poignant and provided a perfect way for us to find out a lot more about Earl and God's Angel corp.

I also found the criminal investigation in this one very good. There was some substance to the characters and the crime scene parts were very well done. The way they weaved the Angel elements and criminal parts together was excellent.

Great episode.
