When one of the convicted trio of the murder of three young boys commits suicide in prison, it brings the mother of the dead man to the Cold Case unit. She maintains her son was innocent, but being from the wrong side of town, helped to convict him and his two friends. This woman has found a letter among the things her sons things. She feels it sheds a new light on the case. These teens had a history for being weird, just because they were different. Even though the case has been closed some time ago, the unit decides to investigate.
This episode marks the return to work of Lilly Rush. The last time we saw her, at the end of last season, she and her boss, John Stillman, had been shot by a man that had smuggled a gun in a wheelchair. Lilly, who looks great is asked by the superior whether she is fit to come back.
As the investigating team begin to delve into the old records, the Cold Case team main interests are two key persons in the original investigation, Det. Joe Connelly and Dylan Noakes, the man serving jail time and the alleged killer of the boys. Connelly is bitter because what he had to deal with when the murders were uncovered. Dylan, on the other hand, maintains he is innocent.
Interviewing the parents of one of the victims, Henry and Tayna Raymes, two important things come out. Their murdered son Jack's favorite toy was his teddy bear. His mother, who worked as a waitress at the time, asked him to put it away if he was to go riding bike with the other boys. The other thing the team discovers is the boys were killed someplace else, but were taken to the abandoned pool later on. After a lot of false starts, the detectives realize Dylan might have been telling the truth all the time. They go back to the Raymes for further questioning only to realize Henry hides something important from the investigation.
An involving episode directed by Alex Zakrzewski, who also was in charge with the previous installment, although the cases have nothing to do with one another. Veena Sud wrote the screenplay. Melissa Leo, one of the best character actresses around, shows up as Tayna Raymes, the grieving mother of one of the dead boys. She does a credible job in the way she ages. Raphael Sbarge and Kirk Acevedo have important roles as Henry Raymes and Dylan Noakes, respectively.
