This is a good example of a hackneyed episode.

The wife of a war hero Duncan Anderson is throwing away rubbish haphazardly at the rubbish tip. Neither she or her husband has gone through if it contained sensitive documents.

The papers come into possession of a busybody who just happen to go to the tip and pick them up. Having seen some letters critical of Anderson's actions during the war. He contacts the newsroom.

Of course Lytton initially gives the story to a young oink brought in by the new editor to bring in stories to court a younger readership. He is not interested in old fossils.

Meanwhile rival Henry has found himself in an embarrassing sex scandal and seeks Lytton's help.

Eventually Lytton talks to Duncan Anderson and he inexplicably reveals what actually happened.

It takes its time getting to the point, there is very little about character's motivations here. We see Anderson talking to the press early in the episode and he recounts the tales he has said many times before. He could had said the same thing to Lytton. After all the letters could just be from a vindictive person.

It seems it is just a load of ingredients just cobbled together to make an episode.
